I don't understand the difference between Green Berets and MARSOC, are they the same but just different branches? What would be the "job" of MARSOC units? I have a general idea of Special Forces but not much for these guys. Never less I have respect for US Forces. I remember my dad who was in the Marines said that Army has all the gear but Marines have all the training lol.
@SaiVihtooMyint MARSOC mostly conducts Direct Action. However lately they have been doing lots of Reconnaissance missions and conducting operations with the ANA to train them. MARSOC came from USMC Recon, which was mostly Reconnaissance and Scout/Sniper oriented guys. Apparently JSOC has requested MARSOC create a Tier 1 unit on par with CAG/DEVGRU as well, so they will do a lot of High Value Target missions and such.

Then go to Afghanistan and see how tough it is out there. all you call of duty losers think it is so easy out there because of videos and games, but you haven't seen half of what it's like out there. i didnt target anyone accually, i say this from experience i was a marine for 5 years sir, and marsoc is not at all based off of seals or berets, it is based off of force recon they took 1st and 2nd force recon and made them marsoc, no seals no berets, marines train marsoc, force recon instructors train marsoc no one else, they may have guest instructors who specialize in certain fields but the seals have marines that do that as well, its called cross branch training everyone has that

Just a reminder that you all need to check out the article about 'elite' units in the military on john t. reed's website...Alot of people also seem to come under the impression that SF are these badasses. They are tough in the respect that they are trained to be a sort of rag tag group of wilderness dwellers that are mainly on a diplomatic mission with the added duty of training local militia. They are not the man hunters that they are portrayed to be in media and video games, by any means...
Special forces are any units that are not of normal infantry structure that have specialist skill sets.
Not all special forces are elite they are just skilled in a particular areas. Some special forces were trained as hunters while some were trained in Reconnaissance.
While the likes of the SAS are considered the best all rounders and you could say they are bad as man hunters.
Can somebody tell me exactly what all schools and training you have to do to do this? I'm going to join the marines when I'm old enough (15) and I just want to know how long it would take to do something like this

@chunxmkgee - It's a pretty hard journey. You won't see any 18, 19, 20, or 21 year old MARSOC operator. Most MARSOC Marines are in their late twenties and thirties.
Only the most experienced/talented Marines can make MARSOC, and the most experienced/talented Marines are usually the ones who make a career out of the USMC. Those Marines have already served more than one enlistment and by that time, they'll already be close to or in their thirties. Nobody can make MARSOC their first enlistment unless they're dealing under the table and pulling high ranking contacts.
you gotta understand in any unit (if they did ever serve for real), are proud of their unit or service and im sure have went through very tough training to be proud of. I respect them all I myself being a soldier in the army. People with Ranger Tabs call themselves 'Rangers ' because they lead sub-par careers and have nothing to brag about. So thats why you hear almost every single civilian who has a friend or relative in the military, they are ALWAYS Rangers. I have heard this 50 times.

@rangerdoorknob Before you say anything else, bear in mind SOF units might overlap in their mission statements and goals but they all have different roles. You need to rethink your view on SEALs, SF, MARSOC, and every SOF unit in the military. Rangers are best at what they do, plain and simple, but they are NOT better than SF at what SF do, nor are they better than SEALs at what SEALs do, nor are they better than MARSOC at what MARSOC does. Remember that, and stay humble - it will take you far.
What exactly does MarSOC do ?? MarSOC has a very bad rep in the SOF community right now with the whole "Task Force Violence" an Fox Company....MarSOC was suppose to be the new Force Recon thats what atleast Army Lt. Gen. Frank Kearney, the top special operations commander in the theater had to say an MarSOC was not ok with this....All you have to do is type in "The story of 'Task Force Violence'..

@USPatriot4911 I'm talking bout Berets. During Vietnam and until recently they were viewed as outsiders by conventional forces. Now they are being looked at as the soldiers of the future. As for MARSOC, I think the Marines need their own SO qualified force. MARSOC will, eventually, find it's own niche, in my opinion.

@USPatriot4911 No, it is fact that the US SF was not considered to be detrimental to US military operations until only recently. The US military now understands the need for SF units. Also, SEALs and MARSOC have two different and distinct roles. SEALs are more of a DA type unit, MARSOC is similar to Army SF in it's goals and missions. SEALs and MARSOC are as comparable as Army SF and Air Force PJ's.

@USPatriot4911 SEALs are concerned more with maritime operations; MARSOC is also a Marine unit, and SEALs are a Navy unit. Furthermore, MARSOC training was developed based off of the US Army SF training. MARSOC is more in line with Army SF than SEALs, plus, each belong to their own branch of the armed forces.
It doesn't matter if SEALs specialty is Maritime Operations...The SEALs are our countrys most veratile warriors period..Any SEAL can thrive in any enviorment hense the name SEAL..An the last BIG Maritime operation that we the public have knowledge is about is the Pirate Rescue..An I would disagree you can compare MarSOC to SEALs way before you can compare them to Army SF... Plus, each wing of the armed forces needs it's own SOF in proportion to it's necessity. MARSOC is necessary for the Marines just as SEALs are necessary for the Navy. Also look at the objectives/goals of Army SF and then look at MARSOC. Then look at the training for Army SF, then MARSOC. They are very similar.
I wouldn't say MarSOC is a necessity, Force Recon should just be the Marines bread an butter and if you ask me they should have just upgraded the task/goals of FR instead..Ehh there training mabey somewhat simillar but this brings me back to it has to be pretty fucking hard to turn a CowBoy Marine into a highly trained quiet Spec Op's soldier as we've already seen from there mistakes..An even if there training pipeline is somewhat similar the missions they do are very different..

Also, Force Recon was good at what they did, but they were not a SOF, they were Special Operations capable. Also, it is important that SOF missions be unified under USSOCCOM.

I don't understand the difference between Green Berets and MARSOC, are they the same but just different branches? What would be the "job" of MARSOC units? I have a general idea of Special Forces but not much for these guys. Never less I have respect for US Forces. @SaiVihtooMyint MARSOC mostly conducts Direct Action. However lately they have been doing lots of Reconnaissance missions and conducting operations with the ANA to train them. MARSOC came from USMC Recon, which was mostly Reconnaissance and Scout/Sniper oriented guys. Apparently JSOC has requested MARSOC create a Tier 1 unit on par with CAG/DEVGRU as well, so they will do a lot of High Value Target missions and such.

i didnt target anyone accually, i say this from experience i was a marine for 5 years sir, and marsoc is not at all based off of seals or berets, it is based off of force recon they took 1st and 2nd force recon and made them marsoc, no seals no berets, marines train marsoc, force recon instructors train marsoc no one else, they may have guest instructors who specialize in certain fields but the seals have marines that do that as well, its called cross branch training everyone has that

USMC are not commandos and MARSOC is a move to align us marines with commando capabilities. All I am doing is drawing comparisons based on my own military experience.

America green berets were based on the British commando's.
Navy seals are based on Marine commando's that were diver trained.
Delta force and Devgru were based on british special forces such as the SAS and SBS.
Earing the green beret in Britain is a basic commando's training grade. There is more specialist classes after this such as mountain leader.
A British commando mountain leader would be classed under an american system as special forces but not in Britain.

They are tough in the respect that they are trained to be a sort of rag tag group of wilderness dwellers that are mainly on a diplomatic mission with the added duty of training local militia. Special forces are any units that are not of normal infantry structure that have specialist skill sets.
Not all special forces are elite they are just skilled in a particular areas. Some special forces were trained as hunters while some were trained in Reconnaissance.
While the likes of the SAS are considered the best all rounders and you could say they are bad as man hunters.

Delta force is based on the SAS system. The USA did not have special forces on a British level until the late 70s.
Navy seals would not be classed as special forces in Britian.
All the training systems that Delta forces were developed on were in use in Britain for about 40 years previous to that.
The SAS were doing special forces in WW2.

Only the most experienced/talented Marines can make MARSOC, and the most experienced/talented Marines are usually the ones who make a career out of the USMC. Those Marines have already served more than one enlistment and by that time, they'll already be close to or in their thirties. Nobody can make MARSOC their first enlistment unless they're dealing under the table and pulling high ranking contacts.

It's just a recruiting video, no biggie. Each branch has badasses, Seals,Green Berets , Force Recon and whatever the Air force is. I don't consider rangers Special Forces , which i know is going to piss someone off but oh well. But the truth is they all work together on missions , so to say one is the best won't happen.

Then you don't know shit about the Regiment. There is a reason why JSOC's go-to boys are ALWAYS the 75th. NOT the SEALs, not SF, and certainly not any MARSOC personnel.

@mcdougal1984 First mistake right there. Our uniforms are sterile when we deploy = meaning no patches or insignia other then rank/name. You are probably confusing members of the 75th Ranger Regiment with your every day military personnel who are Ranger "TABBED".. BIG difference.
And I served with 3/75 from 2003 to 2007.

I worked with Army SF guys when i was in Kandahar and they didn't have any patches on there uniforms. No name tapes,no American Flag , and No rank insignia. And they also all had Afghan beards. Those guys are the ones i call Special Forces. As i said before every branch has bad asses. But when people see a ranger patch they think ranger, not what unit ranger are you?

@mcdougal1984 There is no such thing as Rangers as a whole. Officially Army Rangers are ONLY members of the 75th Ranger Regiment. People with Ranger Tabs call themselves 'Rangers ' because they lead sub-par careers and have nothing to brag about. Civilians are way too ignorant to know the difference between a school and a special operations unit. So thats why you hear almost every single civilian who has a friend or relative in the military, they are ALWAYS Rangers. I have heard this 50 times.

Umm sorry that not every officer or NCO can be apart of a fighting force with around 4300 rangers..

3rd of the 75th = does not mean the 82nd Airborne or the 10th Mountain.. it means exactly that, 3rd Ranger Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment. Nvm, you are too stupid to argue with, you took this conversation to a parellel universe.
There is not ONE member of the 75th Ranger Regiment who considers other TABBED soldiers throughout the military as Rangers, not ONE, I promise you.

US ranger school trains participants to the level of commando. Even though they are not 75th ranger regiment they are still capable people.
Technically they are at a similar level of standard to that of serving 75th ranger members. I am not saying that they can do a rangers job.

@rangerdoorknob Before you say anything else, bear in mind SOF units might overlap in their mission statements and goals but they all have different roles. You need to rethink your view on SEALs, SF, MARSOC, and every SOF unit in the military. Rangers are best at what they do, plain and simple, but they are NOT better than SF at what SF do, nor are they better than SEALs at what SEALs do, nor are they better than MARSOC at what MARSOC does. Remember that, and stay humble - it will take you far.

What exactly does MarSOC do ?? MarSOC has a very bad rep in the SOF community right now with the whole "Task Force Violence" an Fox Company....MarSOC was suppose to be the new Force Recon thats what atleast Army Lt. Gen. Frank Kearney, the top special operations commander in the theater had to say an MarSOC was not ok with this....All you have to do is type in "The story of 'Task Force Violence'..

@USPatriot4911 MARSOC has a similar mission goal as US Army Special Forces, however they technically in the Marine Corps. Furthermore, MARSOC is under the command of US Special Operations Command. They serve a different purpose then Force Recon.

Frank Kearney, the top special operations commander in the theater who kicked MarSOC out of the Afghan Theater.... Lt.Gen. In the past Generals regarded them as outsiders and firmly believed that there was no need for Special Forces. I feel that with time, MARSOC will improve and will be able to redeem itself.

@USPatriot4911 I'm talking bout Berets. During Vietnam and until recently they were viewed as outsiders by conventional forces. Now they are being looked at as the soldiers of the future. As for MARSOC, I think the Marines need their own SO qualified force. MARSOC will, eventually, find it's own niche, in my opinion.

Ehhh, I wouldn't say that much now they have been respected for what they do sense they were created....They have always had a unique job, train an lead local people an guerrilla fighers against an opressive ruler or army..You can truly say that there job really differs from regular SF's....
My personal opinion on MarSOC [No offense to any Marines I respect all of our military] is your probabaly right they will etch out there meaning eventually but I think it will mostly be Recon.

@USPatriot4911 No, it is fact that the US SF was not considered to be detrimental to US military operations until only recently. The US military now understands the need for SF units. Also, SEALs and MARSOC have two different and distinct roles. SEALs are more of a DA type unit, MARSOC is similar to Army SF in it's goals and missions. SEALs and MARSOC are as comparable as Army SF and Air Force PJ's.

Direct action
Special reconnaissance
Foreign internal defense
Other roles:
Counter-terrorism
Information operations
Unconventional warfare....Thats what MarSOC suppose to do, SEALs do all that plus more... An even if the Berets were looked at as outsiders they always had a GREAT sucess rate..

@USPatriot4911 SEALs are concerned more with maritime operations; MARSOC is also a Marine unit, and SEALs are a Navy unit. Furthermore, MARSOC training was developed based off of the US Army SF training. MARSOC is more in line with Army SF than SEALs, plus, each belong to their own branch of the armed forces.

@USPatriot4911 No need to apologize. I say MARSOC is like Army SF is because their training regiment was mirrored off of Army SF, not SEALs. Plus, each wing of the armed forces needs it's own SOF in proportion to it's necessity. MARSOC is necessary for the Marines just as SEALs are necessary for the Navy. Also look at the objectives/goals of Army SF and then look at MARSOC. Then look at the training for Army SF, then MARSOC. They are very similar.

I wouldn't say MarSOC is a necessity, Force Recon should just be the Marines bread an butter and if you ask me they should have just upgraded the task/goals of FR instead..Ehh there training mabey somewhat simillar but this brings me back to it has to be pretty fucking hard to turn a CowBoy Marine into a highly trained quiet Spec Op's soldier as we've already seen from there mistakes..An even if there training pipeline is somewhat similar the missions they do are very different..

@USPatriot4911 Their training pipeline is actually just a mirror image of Army SF. It even culminates in the end with a Robin Sage type activity, although it has a different name. Also, Force Recon was good at what they did, but they were not a SOF, they were Special Operations capable. Also, it is important that SOF missions be unified under USSOCCOM.

@MrOhiostateboy -----------Lad, You may wan't to speak to the FIRST 'Special Operations unit on a large level we fielded!There are a few of them still alive, They operated behind Japanese lines for months, Often no re-supply, There are several films, They ate the pack mules they were using, If the Japs didn't kill them then malaria, dysentary, & a multitude of diseases took their toll. Check out our first 'guerilla' or 'commandos' as people often called them then, Just Got! LMAO! Check it out

Youngest Marine in Boot Camp & youngest on base when i went to FMF. I know the Marine Drill Instructors would love to have your ass standing on the yellow footprints, Doubt you could 'hack it' though, A Marine unit conducted some of the first true Spec Ops in WWII. Just 'google' Evans Carlson, OR Carlsons Raiders,.........

@MrOhiostateboy are you kidding me the green berets training is 4 pussys i just watched some show on it the other day and like 50 people quit and were throwing up because they had 2 roll on the ground and have all 12 of the people in there group lift a 1000 lb log over there heads and they did that for like 2 hours and they were throwing up and quiting so i think marine boot camp may just be well... lets just say a fuck of alot harder

I hope you also know that the "Show" you watched is SF selection, IF you make it through that then you go to the CUE course which is 100x harder and way harder then any marine crap.THEN they go to different courses for land navigation, Demolition and explosives, weapons etc. So Shut up because those people throwing up on that show weren't even close to becoming one and you would never make it in selection
