I find, for me, the medication is much like training wheels. It gives me the ability to establish some good habits and a framework to practice a level of focus I could not reach otherwise... I know because I have tried. I also agree that the medication should only be introduced after other methods and means have been tried first. I didn't take any medication until 3 years after being diagnosed. To be honest though, I wish I wouldn't have waited so long.

He was an excellent student until his 2nd year of college when he starting dropping classes and spiralled out of control. He tried respiratory therapy school and dropped out. He went voluntarily for treatment in Houston at Memorial Herman Park (PaRC) who kicked him out after 8 days of detox and 2 weeks of in patient. 7 days later he died.

I managed to control my ADD and Asperger all by myself more or less after two years of medication (heavy Concerta) and after declining to take them any longer because they were turning me into a zombie without any appetite. @lulu8332 I totaly agree but I must admit that some have such severe social problems that they also suffer from that on the long term if they aren't given those meds.. I also had meds for two years but now I'm actually very social-minded and I'm even looking forward to a job as an army officer or a politician. The amount of 'symptoms' shown are different from person to person and it might also be that you yourself actually love studies.. It is common that someone who has ADD/Asperger (my case) actually loves one perticular range. For example, I live in a country with nearly any firearms but still I can operate close to every handheld firearm in the world and (dis)assemble numerous types just because of books..

Im on ritalin and have been since I was 3. I did in fact have a heart scan before being placed on ritalin. Most drugs now days can in fact cause heart problems. I see where you are going with this but you need to invest more time in your research. PS I am also a doctor.
I use Ritalin and you are absolutly right about the fact that its not a solusion its only making my life abit easyer. I tried for around 7-8 years al kind of things but till now nothing has helped me clear the storm in my head as retalin. I am aware of the risks but willing to take them.

I mean, I got to the point that I could not express myself and that I was being pushed into a tiny room in the back of my head by the drug.. Really great it is not just Ritalan that causes these horrible affects.After being proscribe such drugs as Melleril,Piportal,Dipixol,Rispridone,Olanapine cloroprozine sequeqil,for a diagmoises of schizophrenia.I developed an illregular heart beat.I became confused,unable to concentrate,I was told i would be on this kind of medication for the rest of my life.In 2007 i became medication free after 15years plus on this kind of medication.To think this kind of meds is used on children is horrific.

@playerofnox You could have past out because you were hypotensive from not drinking enough water or getting up to quickly. These drugs raise BP slightly, so your hypotension was prob unrelated to ADHD. The woman in this video is disseminating a ton of wrong information

i've been prescribed adderall for a while. Fearful of withdrawing 'im quite addicted, when I don't take for even a day I feel like I have been hit with a bulldoser. im a mess inside n out doing good in school tho. My concluscion on adderall: Solves one problem created a whole new batch. I ve cut back from 30mg to 10mg just need to make the next step. I would never put any kid on this drug. I want the real me back.
i was on concerta for ADHD a few years ago, for me concerta was a hell tablet. i had insomnia, loss of appetite, stomach aches, heart palpitations and a crap load of other symptoms. im glad i stopped taking that garbage, if i wouldnt have i may not be here today, or still be in a living hell.

I was diagnosed ADHD when I was 7 or 8 years old and I was put on dexetrine wubutrine ( i think I mispelled that last one) I was taken off medication when I was 13 because the doctor told me it wasn't working anymore. But personally I feel like my unrulyness stemmed from my turbulant childhood. At the age of 4 I was taken away from my real mom and placed in a foster home. My world was turned upside down at the age of 4. I felt like instead of understanding I was given drugs :(
Dr, family, and the meds, I have been able to move out on my own, secure a position in management, and administrate a high-level business information system. in reality, you can't just control it, I know that first hand. The meds do not do this on their own, you need a therapeutic level of meds, and a support system. Don't bad mouth what you clearly do not understand. My child is 10 yrs old and has just had his Focalin increased to 30 mg a day. I want him off of everything by the time he is 13. When he was younger, he would get into dangerous situations because he was so impulsive. I would go to school to spy on him and without medication he would not stop talking. I was given a heart/blood pressure electrocardiogram test by my Dr. before being prescribed Adderall. I am in college and use the drug to study. Anyone that takes a stimulant like this without a prescription is risking a heart attack or stroke.

I'm not really familiar with focalin. not all add drugs are the same. if there is some reason why you think you should stop taking it then yes i think you should talk to your dr. about it. it can't hurt to have an electrocardiogram done, it just gives a detailed reading of your heart rhythm and blood pressure level. whether or not you really need one though is up to your dr.

BUT i have to bring this up. i heard (i dont have sources) but I heard that the percentage of kids not growing out of it is around 50% instead of 70% but i am having trouble finding a source to verify that. where did you get the 70% from so i can see what is up with this stuff?
I was diagnosed with ADHD. I haven't taken its for a good while, but just recently I took 10mg and afterwards, the medicine began to wear off and my chest started hurting. I also have anxiety problems but this all began after a near death car accident I was in.
Did I have an electrocardiogram? Yes but I had to lie about chest pains. IN Canada im not allowed to be informed and if I am informed I cant have proper tests but yes I forced them through lying to them.
I take 45 mg dex per day and have for the past 3 years.

ADHD/ADD has been around for years. There are people who actually have it (myself included). In the past, it was rarely, if ever, diagnosed and it was thought to be something a child would eventually outgrow. It's overdiagnosed, yes, but it is real and some people really do need the medicines.
@kaptinstiffypower1 Its mental but comes from biological differences. You can't just "mentally control" it. I think there should be a balance between therapy and medication. Medication is healthy IF prescribed and used right. The medication is to relieve symptoms so people can focus on therapy, which I think actually targets the cause.

I also had meds for two years but now I'm actually very social-minded and I'm even looking forward to a job as an army officer or a politician. The amount of 'symptoms' shown are different from person to person and it might also be that you yourself actually love studies.. It is common that someone who has ADD/Asperger (my case) actually loves one perticular range. i've been prescribed adderall for a while. Fearful of withdrawing 'im quite addicted, when I don't take for even a day I feel like I have been hit with a bulldoser. im a mess inside n out doing good in school tho. My concluscion on adderall: Solves one problem created a whole new batch. I ve cut back from 30mg to 10mg just need to make the next step. I would never put any kid on this drug. I was diagnosed ADHD when I was 7 or 8 years old and I was put on dexetrine wubutrine ( i think I mispelled that last one) I was taken off medication when I was 13 because the doctor told me it wasn't working anymore. But personally I feel like my unrulyness stemmed from my turbulant childhood. At the age of 4 I was taken away from my real mom and placed in a foster home. My world was turned upside down at the age of 4. I felt like instead of understanding I was given drugs :(

Dr, family, and the meds, I have been able to move out on my own, secure a position in management, and administrate a high-level business information system. in reality, you can't just control it, I know that first hand. The meds do not do this on their own, you need a therapeutic level of meds, and a support system. Don't bad mouth what you clearly do not understand. My child is 10 yrs old and has just had his Focalin increased to 30 mg a day. I want him off of everything by the time he is 13. When he was younger, he would get into dangerous situations because he was so impulsive. I would go to school to spy on him and without medication he would not stop talking. I was given a heart/blood pressure electrocardiogram test by my Dr. before being prescribed Adderall. I am in college and use the drug to study. Anyone that takes a stimulant like this without a prescription is risking a heart attack or stroke.

I'm not really familiar with focalin. not all add drugs are the same. if there is some reason why you think you should stop taking it then yes i think you should talk to your dr. about it. it can't hurt to have an electrocardiogram done, it just gives a detailed reading of your heart rhythm and blood pressure level. whether or not you really need one though is up to your dr.

The meds they use normally for ADHD are a type of speed there for raising the heart rate.

BUT i have to bring this up. i heard (i dont have sources) but I heard that the percentage of kids not growing out of it is around 50% instead of 70% but i am having trouble finding a source to verify that. where did you get the 70% from so i can see what is up with this stuff?

I was diagnosed with ADHD. I haven't taken its for a good while, but just recently I took 10mg and afterwards, the medicine began to wear off and my chest started hurting. I also have anxiety problems but this all began after a near death car accident I was in.

did i check my own blood pressure? Yes.
Did I have an electrocardiogram? Yes but I had to lie about chest pains. IN Canada im not allowed to be informed and if I am informed I cant have proper tests but yes I forced them through lying to them.
I take 45 mg dex per day and have for the past 3 years.

I cant stand this lady, im 14 years old with ADD and i am mature enough to understand that meds work. YOU CANNOT SIT INFRONT OF THAT CAM AND TRY TO TELL ME THAT MEDS DO NOT WORK. You have no idea how it is to be an ADD child in a world as it is today. You just cant speak on this matter unles u have lived it every day.

kid medicine for add works, but its not healthy for you, later on you just rely on the med, and in reality you could just control it. Its all mental

@kaptinstiffypower1 It doesn't 'work'. I don't have ADD or ADHD, but if I took the medication, I'd be much less energetic too, and I'd concentrate more. They 'work' on ANYONE. ADD and ADHD aren't real illnesses. They're frauds. Doctor's get paid to give these medicines to people BY THE COMPANIES. It's sickening.

ADHD/ADD has been around for years. There are people who actually have it (myself included). In the past, it was rarely, if ever, diagnosed and it was thought to be something a child would eventually outgrow. It's overdiagnosed, yes, but it is real and some people really do need the medicines.

@kaptinstiffypower1 Its mental but comes from biological differences. You can't just "mentally control" it. I think there should be a balance between therapy and medication. Medication is healthy IF prescribed and used right. The medication is to relieve symptoms so people can focus on therapy, which I think actually targets the cause.
