Back then computer graphics were so bad they couldn't even use computers for the "simulator" scene. They used movie footage and applied a red filter to the images of the "bandits" to make them look "digital".

Here's an interesting point: these simulators are basically video games with a full cockpit interface. No PC-class computer of the 1986 era could have handled this, so they must have used some kind of mainframe. Today, a dusty old gaming PC from 5 years ago could give far better graphics. You could probably get enough parts for the computer for free, though all that fancy cockpit stuff is still big bucks

I never really have been inside an aircraft in my entire life. do the electronic audio tones in an F-16 attack jet really have that kind of "oscillating whine" similar to that of Mr. Spock's viewer on the bridge in the original series of Star Trek or is that just for dramatic purposes ? the reason why I ask this is because the F-14's in "Top Gun" didn't do this, nor do any kind of military aircraft I've ever seen in a documentary ...

Yeah CD Players were out, but only just and they were expensive and huge, and most people still used cassette players. This movie was likely being filmed during 1985 (released 86). The first portable player was only released in 1984 (Sony Discman I believe), and the CD market as a whole was still in it's infancy.
