Where are your facts? Bauerlein's argument succeeds because it's based on actual information rather than pure opinion. Where are the facts that support your hypothesis that education has been on a decline? How do you explain Obama's "Race to the Top" program? When did schools stop teaching multiplication? What is the "like grid system"? Could you be anymore vague? For you it's more likely that religion is more misleading than the internet; your opinion isn't very convincing.
@pointynose Where are his facts that education has been declining? Me. I go to UCLA and have friends from Berkeley as well as UC Davis; we're all losing our minds and drowning in loan debt because of budget cuts to education. Don't even TRY and deny that they're happening. Our tuitions are skyrocketing every three months and the little bit of good public education left is inaccessible to most deserving students because of these prices.
Seriously, I play with my son all the time. And I've cut down considerably on the amount of cursing I do in front of him. He's even told me to "don't say those words daddy!" the few times I've slipped up. :P
You raise some very valid points sir. You seem a lot smarter than other people your age.
However, there are some very scary things happening today due to stupidity. It is definitely parent's faults.
While you are contemplating politics, the others are playing nintendo all day. As an intellectual you would probably agree that video games are a waste of time.
nice ending line. ur d man! cant really blame religion bt i dont think u wer. i agree, its pretty much jus exposure. 2much exposure to 2 many concepts, a human can't think on each one and make up their mind-well, the average joe anyway. so they reject all input in hope to hibernate the endless shit out. prob is-its fuken everywer lol and baby boomers-they created this world we live inn bt cnt navig8 thru the masses2find truth like we do dey dnt hav d nowledge so wat they on bout morons lol x s.p
Great thoughts. This response is to one point you raised. I don't think creationism is to blame for the dumbing down of an entire generation in regard to science. I believe the teaching of macro evolution is far more to blame for putting people off the study of science. It requires people to suspend their rational thought process and believe that scientists can actually measure events over millions of years. They can't, the variables are too great. Evolution is in all science. It puts me off.
you inspire me, god im so sentimental at the moment AHHH!! :D but seriously, you make me want to learn more- to be better informed, to know as many aspects of an issue as possible, not the one that is blatantly obvious... :D :D :D i like your feelings on the matter!! :D
i love your opinions on such subjects... :D it really makes me happy... your a role model. i would be extremely happy if i had your opinions when i reach your age, kudos for expressing your opinion... very glad i watched (like five times :D - time spent constructively in my opinion :)
YES! Exactly! =_O+ I can't believe elders are pointing the fingers at today's generation for our "lack of intelligence". Children don't raise themselves. It is the parents, the teachers, and anyone else you can think of that raise children and teach them common sense and discipline that are to blame. I'm still in high school, and I'm outraged at today's dumbed down educational system -_-+ compared to the earlier ages...
FUCK YEAH! you tell em haha, on a serious note though. I think you covered that very well and I think all your points were valid, nice response sword.
the whole video was done well u really made some valid points. . i could feel u on them, but what really got me was the last 2 minutes. . . the Babyboomer generation. . did SELL OUT. . . ur the only one who said that in the response videos. . . damn GOOD JOB
Thanks for this video. I'd like to add that our generation will be spending it's entire life cleaning up after the baby boomers and the mistakes they made. I'm not referring to all baby boomers, just those who had to take what was once a phenomenal movement and turn it into a constant war for the most money and material goods.
So yeah. That bastard shouldn't be insulting our generation.
Swordsage: Interesting video overall; I'll check out your other stuff sometime.
You mentioned dissatisfaction with the two-party system at one point. I'm not sure if you know this (I haven't seen your other videos yet), but there's a simple fix for this.
Preferential voting. It's a small change to the ballot, but it would change the tactics and psychology of the election quite radically.
We have the solution to the two-party system. It doesn't solve all our problems at all, but it might help.
Excellent video! Baby boomers blaming their kids for poor education and so forth is like Christians blaming atheists for the Crusades. Even VenomFangX isn't that retarded.
I see a lot of people on here are talking about the commercial thing... If you want to know how it all started and how it evolved, check out a video called "the century of the self". And as for economics and their being a force of nature over modern life... see America: freedom to fashism" by Aaron Russo.
Nice video man, keep on talkin.
Anyone who can, must! do what they can while the net is still ours. Teach, and help create a strong minority. If you always wanted to do something, time's right
"Bringing their stupid with them" I love that line.
As someone living in one, that a multi-party system becomes for practical purposes a two-party system absent of certain methods of counting the votes. In fact, you pretty much need certain methods of voting to make things work. Things like the electoral college or similar systems are just not democracy. It disenfranchises certain people, and encourages pandering to certain groups like the theocratic right.
Great video. I thought the "Greatest Generation" was the WWII generation. Hmm...
You're spot on about this broken two-party system. It's sad to know that the third party will never get federal funding, let alone elected to any kind of higher office.
You alluded to crass consumerism. I worry about that. I worry that there is a corporate Internet "land-grab" in progress and that the educational potential of the Internet will be tossed aside in order to perpetuate cultural "crass consumerism" that started, as you said, in the 1950's with the WW2 generation. If there is a generation to be blamed, I submit that is the WW2 generation. 60's hippie counter-culture tried to stem the tide. But we were ridiculed and our efforts marginalized.
I worry about that myself. With the changes that have happened to the net, and the plans they have for it down the line, I really worry that soon, the net will no longer be the wide source of real information that it is, but rather a wasteland of entertainment and commercials: in other words, a new kind of TV.
I have to admit that I do admire SOME of the people of the baby boomer generation; the ones who stuck to their guns even up to today. The ones who didn't sell out, but got shoved aside.
Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm often accused of failing to "grow-up" and wallowing in "idealism". When did striving for ideals become a bad thing? I can kind-of understand the attitude towards radical back-to-nature techno-phobes, but I'm a complete techno-phile. I just think that we should consider what we're using this technology for. I think we should consider the motives of people who seek to tell us what we should and should not do with technological acheivment.
I'll argue against the internet and say that the "information superhighway" gets one to the destination without any thought to the journey. Perhaps it's a romanticized notion, but the idea of say, searching for the independent book or record store and so on and so forth is taken away. Now it's all amazon, mp3's, etc..
Ironic how I'm using the internet to get this message to you--so I'll equivocally say that it's a double-edged sword--people don't go out of their way,but their way has expanded.
*nods* The net is, after all, a venue of communication, as well as a tool. It all depends on the people using it. And if the people using it happen to be shallow in intellect, that flaw will show with their use of this tool. American citizens have unfortunately been pushed further down a path of mind numbness, and this is what's being reflected with a huge portion of the net today.
The internet has created an explosion of information.
I think it was skeptics inquirer (or whichever skeptic magazine Micheal Shermer owns) they did a article a while back uncovering the research that shows how americans IQ's are getting better over the years, if you wanted to check that out.
I didn't look in to the contents of the book, but if I take your word for it, and I do, then yes, this guy has is giving the internet too much credit suggesting that its the cause for stupidity. A human's intelligence and keenness to learn will be the product of their experiences growing up, much like our characteristics and pretty much anything that's not there from a predisposition or genetic component we were born with.
But furthermore, as you noted, the dumb shit on the internet is......
yeah, it seems that way... I seem to be able to go over the 10 minute limits, but once I reach 11, forget it. I try to keep things under ten, but I'm just not good at keeping my mouth shut at times. :P
So I left this long reply to your video but it didn't get through. Essentially, I stated I agreed with you. Maybe it'll show up later? Who knows. I also suggested you google: the baglady dumbest generation
"That Baglady" blogger does a good job of debunking the points in Bauerlein's book, it's not perfect but she does bring up some good points.
