I noticed that Bob Mould is playing what looks like a Gibson Explorer for this concert instead of the Ibanez Super Rocket Roller Sr (basically, a Gibson Flying V clone) that he used during his Husker Du years.
What a killer performance this was by Husker Du. Husker Du, as well as the 80s SST roster, were just awesome musicians & songwriters. Husker Du, Black Flag, Minutemen, Meat Puppets; etc. was my soundtrack music as a teen in the 80s to present day. Just timeless tunes that still floor me 25 years later.
Yes, his vocals aren't always consistent. However, later on in his solo career, at one small show, his voice was shit (in his own words) so he had people come up on stage and sign with him, so he will always put on a memorable show, Good voice, or not...
@alphasparqy He's blown out his voice numerous times...he takes better care of it now. He quit smoking years ago and quit drinking. But he has allergies and sometimes that effects his voice in the venue.
I met Grant once and he was a nice enough guy but definitely seems a little bitter. He has a bit of chip on his shoulder. I'm sure Mould has something to do with that.
From what I read in Our Band Could Be Your Life, they had problems WAY before Grant started taking heroin. Power struggles started the moment Grant started getting songs on the records.
Grant and Bob had mutual interests, certainly but they were never exactly friends.
They had a songwriting rivalry that yielded terrific results for a few years and albums and we should just be grateful that the wheels stayed on the wagon as long as they did.
Kind of a weird arrangement, I've never heard it played this fast, but I've only heard versions from their later tours and this looks to be around '85 or so.
This is such an amazing song. Anyone who's heard it counts it among their favorites. Cobain or Vedder or any other lame usurper only wish they could write like this.
I met Grant a couple of years ago at the 7th St Entry. He was a bit of an ass. The underappreciated genius. He told me a certain unnamed country singer wanted to cover "terms." Can you believe that?
haha thank you dude! i love husker du but I'm sick of people talking about how underrated they are. sure, people who don't listen to this kinda stuff don't mention them but most people who listen to "alternative" (blech!) music refer to them as one of the best bands of all time. they get plenty of credit in the underground (jesus who made up these fucking stupid terms?)
In the larger world of music, they don't get enough credit. Nirvana practically ripped them off, and Nirvana was a world-wide phenomenon. In all honesty, I don't care that Hüsker Dü are under-rated by asshole journalists, but they do deserve to be named among the most influential groups in rock history, along with the Beatles and Led Zeppelin.
i have to agree with morgoth195. bob mould never sold out to MTV and because of that, at the time, 99% of journalists paid Du no attention. only years later while bob was heading up sugar and then solo were journalists ready to proclaim Du as something special. these "journalists" from Spin and Rolling Stone only praised Du due to social pressure. at the time, the mags were consume with REM and other sell outs to pay any attention to great bands like Du.......
The whole scene back then was amazing. For that small of a town/metro area to put out the Huskers and Replacements, Otto's, Motorhome, Baby Astronauts, Man Sized, Rifle Sport, and more, it was fun. AND, Madison's, Milwaukee's and Chicago's were always in town.
It's from a semi-official VHS that's now deleted. Filmed '85 at the Camden Palace London (now Koko) and weirdly enough shown once on TV! Cheers for posting this I wore my copy out in '96!
im pretty sure kurt used to listen to husker du bro, and dave from nirvana has a song with bob mould

Anybody know the reason why?

Der beste Hüsker Dü aller Zeiten.....Bob Mould ist soooo lattendicht und singt es besser als auf Platte.....amazing
lifesucker67 2 years ago
The vocal melody is one of the best parts of the studio version, and sadly Bob doesn't stick to it here.
morgoth195 3 years ago 9
And the best part of the live versions was Grant's backing vocals, which he sadly doesn't do here either.

i feel like this song would be in a trailer for a teen movie. not a crappy teen movie though.

The only thing that really bothers me about Husker Du is their recordings are always a bit too much treble.

Must be a Mould thing, that's the way it was with Sugar, too.

Then the sun disintegrates between a wall of clouds
I summer where I winter at, and no one is allowed there
Do you remember when the first snowfall fell
When summer barely had a snowball's chance in Hell?

Love and hate was in the air, like pollen from a flower
Somewhere in April time, they add another hour
I guess I'd better think up a way to spend my time
Just when I'm ready to sit inside, it's summer time
Should I go fishing or get a friend to hang around
It's back to summer, back to basics, hang around
Getting drunk out on the beach, or playing in a band
And getting out of school meant getting out of hand
Was this your celebrated summer? Was that your celebrated summer?
