Sam Harris gives a powerful interpretation of this iconic tune. Al Jolson was a complex character who did not trumpet his acts of kindness. Today, he's known for blackface and his outsized ego. Little is known of the huge, unheralded gifts he handed out to the needy. Even less is known of his assistance to Black artists breaking into the entertainment field or the tireless effort he made for American GI's. It will be intrresting to see how this plays out if this show hits Broadway.
That was outstanding, Sam. Really, there aren't words. Brought a tear to my eye! A happy one! I know Jolson, and Garland are up there smiling! Bravo! 5 stars! :)
I watched this last night and woke up singing it this morning. The depth of Sam's energy continues to captivate me year after year. This is wonderful and I hope Jolie eventually makes it to Broadway... I'd go see it!
I just hate this man didnt make it mainstream. He is one of the few talents I have ever heard. I had forgotten him until I saw him on here and I said "hey thats that man that sang that Aretha franklin song on Star Search in the original key". he is still the best thing living.
I was lucky enough to see a public workshop performance of the show's incarnation as "Broadway Man" as part of Stages 2004 in Chicago. This show has had several names since 1998 when it was Broadway bound as "The Jazz Singer" until a major investor backed out or something. Other than workshops and readings, it has never been done as a full production that I know of... and Sam has always been the lead attached to it when I've seen or heard news of it.
@diartistMI you know i saw it with in 2004 with you at the staged reading in chicago. I hope that he finally get to do it on bway in the near future. I still remember this it since it was the first time see sam singing live. I never knew sam was so amazing as a performer until i saw him in that performance.
Diartist, very well put. It makes me think about Funny Girl. Streisand didn't imitate Fanny Brice. In fact, I think she said at the time she didn't even look at old footage of her. And it wasn't even historically accurate. It was a musical that explored certain aspects of that life. Same with Jersey Boys. They made a point of saying it wasn't an impersonation, but an essence. From what I know about Jolson, Sam embodies the showmanship and the charisma. An incredible performer exploring another
I love your wonderful and talented voice. i almost cried because it brought me back to my father inlaw teaching this song to my daughter when she was two. Even though his song was a cute silly version, your amazing!!! Love the new hair!!!
Now how am I supposed to sleep? This Rock-A-Bye is so thrilling. Not exactly a lullaby! The arrangement is amazing. Sam is spectacular. SHOW BIZ BABY!!!! No one like him on the planet. Jolson, Garland, Sammy Davis, all the great. He's one of them. So great. So rare. And live is like no other. God I want to see him sing these songs on Broadway. People will freak the F$#%CK OUT!!
Very very good!

Sam Harris is not impersonating AL JOLSON, he is merely singing his interpretation of a song sung by Al Jolson, among many others.

WOW! Time for a special live appearance. The only other person to sing with that power & Clarity in words was Judy Garland.
