Awesome advice! I just finished writing a short story yesterday and I really enjoyed it. I've written only one before and it was for school, but this time I had more time and more freedom.
I enjoy reading short stories though I prefer novels but I've never been able to write short stories very well. With what you mentioned, I spend a lot of time describing and showing my reader things and then my short stories turn into novels. Only one time in my life I intended to write a short story and actually did it. When we had to turn in 2 short stories for my creative writing class, I handed in that one and my second one was actually a snippet from a novel I was writing.
Short stories are really good for me, as a writer. When I try to write novels I tend to lose sight of the plot, and sometimes I wind up with a mess of characters and scenes with no point. Writing a short story is good practice for getting a concise plot together.
Short stories are my thing. I began writing with short stories, I'm editing four short stories, I'm writing another short story, I love short stories. Meanwhile, I fail at novels. I horribly fail at novels.
BUT, you have inspired me to write an adaptation of Cinderella, so I must thank you for that. Hopefully this will thrust me into novel writing and I'll become good at it eventually, and if it does, I will thank you again forever! So THANK YOU!
I LOVE writing short stories...but I don't follow any of these pointers except the last one. What works for one writer, may not work for another. For example, if I outline, I lose interest. Don't know why, just do.
I used to ALWAYS write short stories but I just don't seem to be able any more. I've just gotten so used to (attempting) to write novels that I've kind of lost the ability to write something short and simple. It's a pity, short stories were fun.
when i have to write short stories in exams i tend to sent them around a place rather then a person because places don't need much development. for example i write 'i used to go to the beach as a kid....' and write the story from a first person point of view, of course i love charactors but in high pressure situations thats what works for me (i get A's in english)!

I really love writing short stories and I like this advice. I've always liked writing short stories more cause you can tie them up in pretty little bows. For some reason I always get too lost when I try and write a novel. I prefer to instead write a group of small tied up scenes and then figure out how to link them up later.
Thank you for the advice! I write a lot of short stories (not for anthologies, unfortunately!) and my biggest stumbling block is going too much into the backstory in the first few paragraphs. I will revise and get to the point after seeing this! :)
I was thinking about short stories yesterday. I'm not big on them myself, but yesterday I was thinking about vampires and how I'd love to write a vampire story, but it's all over done. Then it occurred to me, I could write a vampire short story. It wouldn't take up too much of my time and might be fun to share. So we'll see. I might just do that. Great video!
This was very helpful. I've been trying to get some of short stories published before I send in my book, that way I'll have some publishing experience. However, writing a novel is much easier! I feel so claustrophobic while writing a short story because you're so limited on space. Thanks for the tips!
I wish writing books was easier for me than short stories. I love short stories and I love writing them, I just wish I could manage the detail and length and actual story requires. I'm not very good at expanding.
One of my English teachers would always tell me that every short story was, in some way, about isolation. I'm curious to know what others think of this.
I personally see a lot of appeal in short stories. I consider novels as very long, full course meals. You have to pace yourself in both the preparation and consumption, and you need to take time to let the plot sort of...marinate? But short stories are more like pieces of candy, because they're allowed to be just bursts of sweetness, like how short stories are allowed to be all action, like a Hershey's Kiss. But I digress, because food analogies make me hungry.
I'm a huge advocate of presenting a problem and not giving a solution in short fiction. I love the uncertainty aspect - the many different ways someone can interpret what might have happened if the story were longer; we got into a pretty hefty discussion in my lit class about whether or not Jig and her boyfriend stayed together after the end of "Hills Like White Elephants" by Ernest Hemingway.
I agree with you 100% on outlines. Or a brainstorm at minimum. Best thing I could ever do for myself.
I love the color of your nails.

how many words are short stories? Also, do I need to write an outline? I really don't like to do outlines... at all!
