Kaas's version (after Brel himself of course) is the best. Her voice is so melancholic and haunting... She knows how to keep it restrained too (unlike the incessant wailing of Streisand; which is coupled with a pathetic attempt at french it must be said!)... Yup Kaas's rendition leaves a marvellously wistful impression.

I had often felt that women singing this song were unconvincing; the image and voice of Brel were too hard to forget.

Kaas renders a different song, where the fire and desperation of Brel are replaced with a deep melancholy and acceptation; but with an hypnotic touch that ends up touching us as deeply as the original.

The montage of nycgirl4 is splendid: like that eye at 0:54, that symbol in the sky at 1:01, that defeated body at 3:20.. just glorious
