However, it should be noted that the Ashes Urn isn't and has never been an official trophy. It's kept by the MCC, not the ECB. The replica urn, which is now used as a trophy, is a relatively new idea. The actual urn was made and presented to the MCC long before calling the series "The Ashes" had caught on.

It only stays in London because that's where the MCC happens to be (i.e. where cricket itself is from).
