  • very true! every word. The only difficlty is that you beging to understand it only when you are experienced enough. )) When you start you think it sounds good as it is)

  • You're a very good teacher.

  • whoa good tips, thanks again.

  • Brilliant tips, definitely worth listening to thank you.

  • Great tips!

  • I'm still a whippersnapper even though I'm above 18 :P. Great tips!!

  • Yeah I have problem changing from almost any chord to B7 and I usually just say,"Whatever." But I think I'm actually gonna write things down and work on that B7.

  • Sorry mate. I'm an old coot and I have no patience.

  • if you dont have patience, then prepare for a long depressing struggle at playing guitar.

  • @the4445 long depressing struggle?! If you really love playing the guitar, you wouldn't be feeling that.

  • wippersnappers

  • the slowly tip is killing me (i'm 17 :D) ...i do hope after some months to become more patient :)

  • "...no you haven't!" xD

    that was a good one!

  • good tips mate!

  • I meant it's so important to eliminate TENSION and not relaxation of course

  • Whippersnappers, LOL! God, I am old.

  • NIce list, but I really wish you had mentioned RELAXATION! That is so so important to be aware of and eliminate and something tons of guitarists struggle with not just beginners

  • That was excellent, thanks Justin! :D

  • you really are the man j outstanding vids man ive been dieing to learn for an age but never seem to get anywhere now watching your vids im busting to get back on my acoustic again thx buddie as music is a big part of my life and to sit and play whatever tune i fancey at the time would be a dream come true. thx again

  • I think for #7 you could also advice to get a dude to practice with. Two friends would push each other quite a bit. I remember you mentioning this in one of your other lessons.

  • Very helpful tips everyone should know.

  • that wuz helpful cuz am a beginner. thanks

  • Thanks for the reply Justin. Trying to use my ring finger to do A shaped barre chords is a killer at the moment!

  • the only thing i'm going to disagree on is #2. never practice making mistakes. i think you should PRACTICE making mistakes once you have something down really well. learn how to fandangle your way out of a bad note without drawing attention, that's what improvising is all about. a bad note is only a half step away from a correct note.

  • good point. that's not for beginners, but you are right, need to clarify that on da web site. J

  • @spidrmage .. maybe you didnt get the message.. the tip is never practice A mistake. So when we think you are not doing well or you dont sound like the guy you are watching .. the best thing to do is always look for the right chord or scale or in which key youve got to play. Most of this things are on the net and easy to find. Repeating mistakes is always making it worse .. in some point you will realize it and the correction will cost lot of time. Personal exp.

  • @EnduringKadjar nah i got the the message thanks.

  • who u calling a whippersnapper?

  • COoOoOoOL T-shirt :)

  • yea ive been so buy it has been extremely hard to practice but lessons liek these and comments from other busy pple motivate me to try 2 make that extra time to play!

  • Comment removed

  • um check out tip number 9 and 10....if you practice enough, you can just play the song.....

  • Yeah, you're right. Sorry, I didn't watch the entire video :S

  • Great advice. Ive been playing off and on for about 35 years and Justin is right on the mark!

  • thank you so much justin, I'm sure you've got great karma coming your way.

  • some great lessons Justin! Keep it up!

  • How much will my earlier learning quirks come back to haunt me as I progress further playing the guitar? At the start of my learning I used just a book and bits and pieces from the internet, I still use my middle finger to barre an open A chord and only play A shaped barre chords with my pinky finger. Will there come a point in my learning where I have to fundamentally go back and train myself to barre the chords properly?

  • For me i use my pinky and index finger for some hard powerchords when playing with distortion, it gives a much easier feel i think. But when playing clean i use the ordinary barre chords, i think you should play them properly aswell. Both ways are ok, but for different styles of playing imo :)

  • If you like heavy/thrash metal, try using your first and 3rd finger for powerchords, will prepare you for a technique called Spider riffing :)

  • yeah, but over time it will come naturally =)

  • up to you tosspiece69... I would try these new ways and see how they feel, if it's too hard stick with what you got. Sometimes I will stress that something is well important, so maybe try those out. J

  • this video should be titled "top 10 things that bug justin about new students" ;) haha, just kidding!!! you are great. There's some awesome stuff here. You're a real inspiration.

  • Learn guitar snail speed with justin;)

ahh just kidding! i love your lesson, i've learned meny things from you :)

  • Cheers Justin, back in november I went crazy into practicing, and was mainly learning with your blues videos, I used to practice for an hour before school, now I don't do so much because I've got exams, anyway cheers for the video, will help me with practicing.

  • i got exams too, doesnt stop me playing for 3+ hours every night lol :P

  • Great Tips ...

    DDR

  • great lesson, nice laugh at 3:43 :D

  • Very very nice lesson - i just love to see your vids :) Would love to live close to you to pay for some real life lessons!

  • Btw a lesson to "how to improvise" with a bit of some F#m scales and not just the ordinary blues A minor scale would be very very helpfull, maybe a little explanation on what notes to stop on and such, would love to see such a lesson :) Tips and tricks!

  • just take the Amin licks and move them down 3 frets dude! From 5th fret move them to 2nd fret and away you go. Ez :)

  • So if i move an normal a minor scale down to the 2nd fret i have a F# scale? And lets say i move it to the 3rd fret - that would make it a g minor? Is it really that easy? :)

  • yes that is exactly right. it is the same for any scale. the root note is the only thing that changes as you move it up and down the neck, the type of scale stays the same.

  • Okay, nice - thanks for the answer :)

  • cool isn't it!

  • I've been playing for 1,5 years without a teacher just from your site Justin! And some of your tips right here(I meen all but some of them) are very usefull also for me as an intermediate. Especialy the last 3. I never played without thinking WHAT to play, WHAT to do in this improvisation. Thanks! 5/5*

  • btw that's great tips justin. you are like my guitar teacher i've learnt so much from you.

  • I'm getting a lot out of these videos because I'm planning on starting teaching soon. Thanks :)

  • awesome! btw looking good there Justin!

  • hey thanks Val :) you always look good! Cos I am sitting you can't see your picture, but I am moving studios next week and will have a little filming corner, so will get the paining back in shot! :) Hope ur well and happy babe. Jx
