Gary is a phenomenal performer, but David Lee Roth had a character and sound that I think is next to impossible for anyone else to pull off convincingly. Dave's lyrics have a wonderful humor to them which was integral to his personality and the sound of the band as a whole. While not a fan of Van-Hagar, I can appreciate that Sammy to chose to change the sound entirely and avoid what he knew would only draw negative comparisons (him singing Dave's material).

Gary was great in Extreme. Unfortunately he did not fit in with VH. At least they played a lot of the good old tunes when they toured with Gary. That's more than can be said for that other goof! Still, Eddie & Alex, come to your senses and do the only right thing!!!!! Van Halen has only ONE lead singer and that's DLR.

I respectfully disagree with the words being 1/2 the song, at least in Van Halen's case. DLR commented in an interview that they didn't print the lyrics because "it's rocknroll". His main contribution imho was showmanship, which was cool when he wasn't too drunk to recall the words. Eddie said he wrote almost all the music, but he agreed early on that they'd all share credit for all tunes (generous to a fault!). DLR didn't write any music.

The singing does sound weak, but it may be partly the low fi recording. This singer was good with his first band (I think it was called "Extreme"). There are no DLR songs; all he ever contributed was words.
