Um, I read all the comments, been watching ST a long time & began w/Classique - very funky disco version! Re: Name of Intro song - I do remember the name of this song; it's called "Beyond Antares". I stress though that I make no bones about who wrote it. Hope that helps somewhat!
Actually Steve youre right...its the reason Alexander Courage wanted nothing more to do with Trek as he felt that Gene had written those (unused) lyrics purely to get half the money.
check out deodato's version, recorded in the same year., it back on youtube again, just search 'Deodato - star trek' This is a great find, but Deodato's incarnation is very interesting for musicians and people who love star trek and the great tunes of the 70s. It's a better arrangement than Van McCoys, in my opinion.
@tsntana Actually I think Roddenberry wrote lyrics so he could claim co-authorship and get paid half the royalties everytime the theme was played. Now I know the trekkers will vote down this comment to -100 because it blasphemes the Holy Name of Gene, Blessed Be He, but that's the version of the story I heard.
@stevel738 nah, I'm a trekker and I agree 100% - this story and others are told in the book Inside Star Trek, which should be mandatory reading for any trekker.
@stevel738 This is the version you get in Inside Star Trek, written after Roddenberry had passed away and could no longer defend himself. It may indeed be partly true (he initially made very little off the series and had to seek royalties wherever possible), but he also clearly had strong feelings about the music and had written poetry in the past. It's noteworthy that he didn't (to the best of my knowledge) seek similar arrangements on any of the other shows he had worked on.
@stevel738 That's the version given in "Star Trek: The REAL Story," co-authored by Herb Solow and Bob Justman. While there's some truth in it (Roddenberry had to make money off Star Trek somehow), he also had strong feelings about the music and fancied himself a poet. As creator and producer of the series, he had every right to pen a lyric, and to receive royalties from it. If Alexander Courage (the theme's composer) had a bone to pick, he should have read his contract more carefully.
Este Van Mccoy era un tremendo músico. Temas como The Hustle, Disco baby y esta versión de este tema de Star Trek, son una demostración de la calidad de músico que era este Van Mccoy. Tremenda era esa de la música disco, para la música instrumental.
He was smart enough to keep the basic format of the song with the addition of the dance beats.

In one of the earily "Making of" Star Trek books, I read that they had considered lyrics for the theme song, but then dropped them.
What I remeber is that the words went:
"My love is on a Star Trek"
But I don't remeber the rest. Wish I could find that book again!

FWIW, Gene Roddenberry did write lyrics for this song. They were never used due to creative differences between Roddenberry and Alexander Courage.
Here they are...
Beyond...he rim of the starlight...
My love...is wandering in starlight...
I know...he'll find in star-clustered reaches...
Love...strange love a star woman teaches...
I know...his journey ends never...
His Star Trek...will go on forever...
But tell him...while he wanders his starry sea...
Remember, remember me.
