Everything but bravery was common in the red army. Germany. Yes. They knew they were fighting for their fatherland. Japan especially, yes. They were fighting for their beloved emperor and home country. But the russian soldiers did not really care who would win. You guys do know that not everybody in the regular German army, the Wehrmacht were not all nazis. They were your everyday citizen, probably a baker. The Waffen-SS on the other hand, were ALL nazis. When you people say "I hate these nazis" or blah like that youre forgetting to realize that many soldiers in the Wehrmacht later on in the war were conscripted. @metalloverdotcom Not all Waffen SS were party members. Where do you get your info? The Waffen SS was the best fighting force man for man in WW2, maybe all time. There were elite Wehrmacht units like Grossdeutschland and The Herman Goering Div(Luftwaffe) but the Waffen SS with its international flavor was probably the best. Most were from other countries. LAtvia, Ukraine,Holland,Danmark, Norway,France, Finland.

You guys do know that not everybody in the regular German army, the Wehrmacht were not all nazis. They were your everyday citizen, probably a baker. The Waffen-SS on the other hand, were ALL nazis. When you people say "I hate these nazis" or blah like that youre forgetting to realize that many soldiers in the Wehrmacht later on in the war were conscripted. The soldiers that fought in the Wehrmacht, were than likely fighting to protect their country and for glory. The Waffen-SS fought for Hitler

@metalloverdotcom Not all Waffen SS were party members. Where do you get your info? The Waffen SS was the best fighting force man for man in WW2, maybe all time. There were elite Wehrmacht units like Grossdeutschland and The Herman Goering Div(Luftwaffe) but the Waffen SS with its international flavor was probably the best. Most were from other countries. LAtvia, Ukraine,Holland,Danmark, Norway,France, Finland.

@whiteman866 Foreign Waffen SS divisions were usually of questionable quality. As for elite - I wouldn't thnik so. Sure, they were fanatical and determined fighters, but labelling them as the elite might be a bit too much. I'd say German paras deserve that title more.

You might have a look at the story of the "malgre-nous", only to quote a famous example. Your statement is only correct if you refer to the pre-42 Waffen SS.

@metalloverdotcom Be careful using words like "ALL" when discussing WWII. Quite simply, NOT all Waffen-SS were Nazis. The Allegemeine-SS on the other hand, yes. In fact after 1942 many Waffen-SS soldiers were conscripted workers or foreigners. Also, the many foreign Waffen-SS legions, like the 13th SS or 15th SS, most certainly did NOT fight for Hitler or any allegiance to Nazi ideology. Most hated the Germans and fought with them purely for the independence of their countries from the USSR.

@metalloverdotcom Well in 1943, the waffen SS had a real shortage of manpower. They started recruiting men who did not meet the criteria. Still your sentence is still wrong. Many Waffen SS men joined the ranks because it was prestigious to be in the SS.

@metalloverdotcom Whermacht did on occasion though support naziactivities. Whermacht pioneers helped build and seal ditches for the massexecutions at Babi Yar. A whole battlegroups motorpool was lent out to round up jews in ukraine stopping the offensive for several days in Barbarossa 1941 in that area. It´s our leaders that lead us astray whatever their origin.

@metalloverdotcom Not everybody was nazi nn Waffen-SS either... Most of them were but especially those foreigner soldiers in SS-battalions were not nazis. Like swedes, norwegians, finns, estonians etc. Some of them were forced to join SS (finns) and some of them wanted to fight communists under german flag because their own army was defeated (estonians).

@metalloverdotcom not true, not all of the Waffen SS were Nazis. Many were foreign volunteers who wanted to join in the fight against Bolshevism. The German army did not accept non-Germans so the WAffen SS was the only way for these men to join.

@severedtesticles There were Non-Germans in the Heer. Ethnic Asians served in the Ost Battalion, where some were subsequently captured in France. Leutnant Wego Chiang served in the German 1st Mountain Division(Gebirgsjäger).

@vvsector1 I know, I know... The Russians did their job very well. The truth is the Russians did 80% of the fighting. Us Brits did play an inportant part though. The Battle of Britain for a start. The North Africa campaign and of course the D-day landings.

@vvsector1 Dude you only need to look at the Russian casualties to understand that the Germans were quite well trained and disciplined. Having said that I'm very grateful to the Russians that it was them doing most of the fighting not the Allies. I am very grateful to the Russians.

@whoooomg The russians just got a mosin nagant with one round of bullets, thats why they tooked ALL of german guns. Germans during 1941 captured many of mosin nagants, and they putted them in use - rebuilded them, so the mosim nagant could use mauser k98 bullets.

@strods1 Some Russian divisions had all their shitty, worthless pigsties of tanks with no ammunition or broken down. All experienced Russian officers were shot, and replaced with worthless pigs of the Finish War of 1940. T-26, 35, BT-2, T-34-76 - All garbage.
