i think that the cat may have had a miscarage and found a stray puppy. then one day brought it home treating it like the kitten it may have lost. i mean i've had a cat which did that with my hamster ages ago. it had a miscarage then one day i found my hamster was out of its cage missing and found it in my cats mouth.. and i thought it was trying to eat it till i noticed that it was licking its head and snuggling into it. sadly the cat died about 2 - 3 years later then the hamster a month after
