Trevor Horn has produced some amazingly engineered stuff. Belfast Child by Simple Minds, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and he did that Buggles Video Killed the Radio Star!
What eighties Top of the Pops lacked that, you know, party atmosphere.
What I'm I trying to kid. This is what's missing of TOTP of the noughties. No wonder it got killed off. Bring back on stage (wearing shorts over jogging bottom's) freestyle dancer's.
this is great proper pop music unlike that rap rubbish you get nowadays where people just tlk and shout over so called songs for me top of the pops started going downhill in 1989 with a so called revamp ie lets make the set look tiny and in 1991 where u had a choice of dortie or franklin but i do say 1994 1997 -1999 seemed to be better but andi peters came along and killed it let cowell buy it as why let the bbc keep it to show 1 or 2 shows a year
It probably sounds stupid, but when I used to watch TOTP in the early 80s when I was about 5 years old, the thing which used to interest me the most were the funny moving graphics at the end of each song (sprites). They always managed to find a different kind of graphic for each song, which I used to think was amazing!
I've noticed they're not present on TOTP shows in 1980 and 1989, so I guess they were on the show in the period 1981-1988.
I'd be interested to know the name of the mixed-race girl in the purple and pink dress dancing just to the left of the 2 singers. She appeared on Top of the Pops quite a lot at that time.
I think the girl dancing to the left is 'Downtown Julie Brown' (kids tv Crackerjack, MTV presenter & contestant in U.S. I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here 2003)
Julie Harris of pop group Tight Fit is the blond haired dancer on the right, dressed in the shiny rose-pink
Sharon Haywoode (UK # 11 hit 'Roses' 1986) is behind the dancers on the right of the terrace at the back, dressed in lilac with a light pink hair bow, along with lead vocalist Anita Mahadervan of pop group Toto Coelo
Aahh, good ole Zoo - the Top of the Pops dance troupe of the time! Both Julies & Sharon (Syd) Haywoode were in the troupe along with a few lads who would appear near enuff everyweek between '82 & 83! Has anybody got "Get Down On It" Kool & the Gang from this very same episode? Zoo are well & truly going for it!!
When UK was still UK and not wanting to make believe that we like Rap music/X factor etc....
I never thought i would look back on the eighties with such nostalgia, But hey! check out the empty noughties & despair. Remember we are UK not USUK.!!
this was when music was good and fun and so TOTP was also good and fun - shame music now is so depressing and crap with rubbish like R'n'B and appalling rap and miserable Brit bands. No wonder TOTP dies a sad and lonely death.

Theresa really does look great here, doesn't she?
Like she stopped off on the way to a Christmas party.
She used to live across the street from me during this period. She used to park her car outside my front door and play their records at top volume.
Given some of the interesting electro flourishes that Trevor Horn put on their fairly ropey material, who can blame her?
ABC and Frankie. did it better, but Dollar did it first.

@ajs41
Julie Brown was with the TOTP dance troupe Zoo, who replaced Legs & Co. That explains her many appearances on the show back then.

Top Of The Pops was great in the early 80's because the artists performed in the middle of the audiences.
