Actually they're not. The Mishnah claims for an insect to be kosher is has to be a "chagor", or grasshopper. Locusts are kosher, Cicadas are not.

Should probably avoid Cicadas from yards that are chemically treated.

it is interesting, I always found this bug very fascinating.
