They say laws are in the works to allow this to be driven on roads.... so doesn't that mean that google is illegally driving this thing on public roads in this video?
@tylerlparks It's legal if there's a person behind the wheel who can take control if there's a problem. The law changes are about changing that requirement.
@qxJ3ST3Rxp Probably only with regards to map-location and directions, to figure out where it's going. GPS has very little to do with the actual driving process, as by itself GPS isn't quite accurate enough. The laser system, cameras, and software are doing the actual driving.
@kageurufu The point is to remove humans from the car traffic equation. If self driving technology become mandatory, cars could travel faster with less spacing between them. Also, they could communicate so that they can avoid chain collisions and similar problems.
@djolepu And if this system is in ANY way open to communication, hackers will find ways to change things. You really are jaded if you truly believe that:
1) People will be willing to completely give up control
2) There is such a thing as a secure system
3) Its possible to perfect ANY program, let alone one this complex. There is ALWAYS a bug, its just a matter of finding it.
Also, what happens if one computer fails? One car sends the wrong information? People will die.
@zashbot So your saying an insecure system is a better solution, where one punk can kill thousands or millions from his computer? It will be a scary day indeed when having our car hacked is a possibility
1 People gave control on many other things before, I don't see a problem with driving. For example: use of AI in stock exchange is rapidly growing, satellite navigation, ...
2) You give too much credit to malicious hackers, especially in systems like these.
3) Systems like this don't have to be 100% secure. The point of this technology is to be more cost effective (faster, cheaper) and safer than human drivers would be.
I believe that this technology will change traffic as we know it.
1) No, use of algorithms is growing, AI has not been achieved anywhere. And you see people driving off into a lake because their GPS told them too
2) I honestly dont give enough credit, as a programmer, hobbyist hacker, and automotive enthusiast, I understand both systems. I regularly reprogram my car, and if someone else was able to do that for me, they could easily destroy things. Some hackers just do things to be malicious
@kageurufu Yep. All it would take is one hack, imagine the possibilities if some crafty terrorists decided to abuse it. Huge pileups/major car crashes on major highways and intersections around the country.

Love how the GPS "estimates" its location.
