Lasius Niger dies out very slowly. They only can have 1 queen. Once the queen dies, The Workers/Soldiers/Scouts die.
Myrmica Ruba, Have multiple queens if you place like 5, they will all live together. DO NOT let Lasius Niger get mixed with Lasius Meadow! Very bad! I can say... Myrmica Ruba is the best. I've had a nest for over 14 years now and they blowing up all the nests! :D
COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLL!!!!!!!! i love queen ants!!
im thinking of starting a colony this summer and i would just like to know if anyone could give me any tips because ive never done it before so im not fully sure on what to do i think i know what to do but not fully sure and whats the best thing to keep them in e.g dirt sand or anything else please reply or message me thanks
@tvfreak78 hey i can give u advise just get a queen either from a colony in a wall dirt sand etc and during flight season which is now for some nests look for the big ants with wings there the young queens put it in a see through box so you can check on it when u need put some tissue paper in about 1 layer so it can hide a couple of stones and leaves and if u wish a bit of sand mixed with soil just a handfull. then when she sheds her wings she is ready to lay eggs hope this helps message me :)
How do feed them? I've always wondered how I'm going to feed my ants if I had a colony, because you'd have to open a glass or something, but at the same time risk them escaping..
If you had too many ants one day, and for sooommmeee reason you are unable to create a larger nest, could you just, not do anything, and allow the habitat's population to stableize to keep a constant population, or would they all die from over population?
@Smartster621atzcmd60 There are several branches of lasius. I've heard about nigers, lasioides and flavus as main types. Nigers and lasioides are black and quite similar to each other; however, nigers have some little "hair" on them, which lasioides dont. Flavus are of a very cool yellow colour :D.
They are small and pretty clever (they are aphid shepherds and they can kill their own parasites). However, they don't make workers.
I have a small colony of lasioides (black, hairless).
Amazing, man. Fucking awesome. I have a lasius farm, too. It's still starting and I only have a queen, 4 nurses and about 10 pupas/eggs due to winter hybernation. They are starting to eat a lot now so I hope they build up this summer!
I was told lasius are easy to maintain as they are quite intelligent compared to other species and they can deal with their parasites by themselves. However, they have no warrior breeds :(.
what do you feed them
