lennon remains unmatched in pure honesty in songwriting. i think thats why he was so effective and worked his way into so many hearts. he wrote how he felt. what better way to get to know someone?
I always thought this album was about realizations. From Mother - John realizing his mother & father are gone - to Working Class Hero - You have to be in the working class to be meaningful - to Isolation - being alone - to Love to My Mummy's Dead. It's all about realizations within yourself.
Hmmm...looking at the thumbnails that show the album cover, the tree with its leaves seems to make the image of a larger John either kissing or blowing on John and Yoko while they are sitting at the trunk of the tree. Take a look, and see if you see it too.
With almost every song from this album and the Imagine album, Lennon made it very clear just how superior he was to Dylan and McCartney. Sorry, but it´s true.
@chingchangchongfly No, certainly not superior - I think McCartney blows Lennon out of the water in terms of "hits" and musical success. Dylan - I never got into, but I guess he's classic. With me, Lennon is hard core first person, writing very visceral songs that resonate with me (hence, probably my favorite Beatle). First person pain may resonate with me (and perhaps you), but objectively, you can't argue with Paul's success.
@JaulMcLennon - Yes. Just noticed it really clearly in the smaller pics off to the side listing the other songs. For all of John's pain regarding his Mother, the pic looks like a woman leaning down to offer a kiss, or blessing.
@GodisTruthseekTruth I dont think anyone has misunderstood Lennon more than you. John actually believed in god if you'll care to do some research and the evidence for the existence of god and jesus is flimsy at best. Lennon is a far more worthy person to worship than god anyway
@Jotape1893 i completley agree what a talent and i imagine he was a great father and husband in the 5 years he took off to be with them and he was at the hieght of hi's carrer when he took those years off hes prob my idol
I'm just discovering this fantastic music. Amazing I went all of these years without knowing the greatness of this album. Funny how things come to you so late sometimes.
Travis Style of picking. Did not know that thanks. I have ideas of my own I can't figure out from 2 years ago just finger picking! Giving up guitar though, I'll come back to it years from now and play classical jazz. You like Oasis at all ? Their last CD has a song near the end of the CD that made pause me while walking in the morning snow yesterday. It put me in a Kind of a Beatles state of mind.
@222Lightning Just wanted to let you know that I'm a *huge* Oasis fan...I have been since their first album in 1994. I'm looking forward to the new Beady Eye album (Liam's band) and Noel's solo album (when he gets around to recording it).
@RojotheRed he was in therapy when he wrote a good portion of it - Janov / Primal Scream (doesn't look like anyone's gotten back to you, so, sorry to pile on, in case you already found out)
@SnateSnaettersson I knew of his primal scream therapy, but in all the years that I have loved that album, it was never therapy for me. I lost my mother in January, and for some reason, I played this album after many years of not listening to it. Tears came for the whole listening. When it finished, I felt relieved and whole. I'm not sure that John intended the listener to feel this way, but Brother, it sure helped me. Thanx for the info. Note: My mother was 76, and she loved John's music.
@222Lightning exactly. The "Travis" style of fingerpicking. It's also used in Julia which is why they sound a bit similar. Two different songs, same picking style. I love it.
Quit arguing about John and Paul. They are both legends in my eyes.

John was extremely talented, but he was so wrong about God that it is sad.
Hope you do not fall into the same trap.
God is working to turn this world away from sin & pain & back to Himself.
He really did send His Son Jesus to die for our sins & redeem the lost.
Keep in mind, Lennon also said he didn't believe in Kennedy. How wrong is that?
You can call on Jesus right now & be redeemed unto an eternal kingdom. The dream is just beginning if you want to be born again. Lennon is wrong.

this guitar picking part,,,,,,,,,one of the first things I figured out on guitar. You pick 1 and 4 together then pick 2 and 3 with fingers 2 and 3.
