Charlie taught so many white kids like me about soul... I wish they had a chance to make an album. They would have changed the world. I think loosing Charlie messed Davy up a little. Ur the man charlie.
@Frodisboy - Charlie Smalls was a gifted composer, but he was not "the man."
I knew Charlie when he was in the Air Force band at Stewart AFB in Newburgh, NY in the early '60s.
I remember him as the most arrogant, self-centered person I'd ever met. He even had no problem cheating his fellow band members out of a few dollars, left on the piano, from 'passing the hat' at the Airman's Club on-base where the group wasn't being paid.
@logansGT - You see...He's still the man. He will forever be 'the Man' for his musical accomplishments & his lesson on soul. When i called him the man it wasnt for being an even handed tip distributor Besides I bet he was playing that piano & was most likely the reason people filled that hat. I'll put it this way, I never heard of anyone else in the Air Force Band at Stewart AFB. When i'm long gone I hope no one chooses to focus on the money i stole in desperation. Thats cool you met him tho.
I met Davy last year after a local concert and I asked him specifically if this was ever recorded because I think it's awesome! He said no, they never recorded it. It was just a special song they did for this part of the show. I told him he should go record it! Charlie Smalls unfortunately died but Davy could do it. He's really cool, btw, very sweet guy. Corny sense of humor but really fun to hang out with!
Davy doesn't need to learn about soul, like Charlie Smalls said, he does have soul. Davy was the most lively one of the group. :p Love the Monkees! :)
I've loved Davy all my life!! I also love that he gets around. BTW, I saw a NoSoulJones bumper sticker the other--that doesn't have anything to do with this clip, does it?
No truer words could have been spoken David. I just said this to my best friend last week. I said "Everyone has rhythm. It's just a different KIND of rhythm". You go Davy!!
Wow Charlie looks like he played detective Barnes on the Unusuals!

When he first started shaking the can it sounded like the intro to "I'll Be Back Upon My Feet" from the album "The Birds, The Bees and The Monkees"

He co-wrote The Wiz music. Amazing talent. Now passed away. Davy has great friends.

I have watched "The Wiz." (the movie which Diana Ross and Michael Jackson appeared)
All songs were very funky.
Charlie and Davy were great close friends.
When Davy appeared to "Oliver", they became a friend.
Davy is small, but he has a greatest soul.
I love Davy !!

Charlie Smalls apparently wrote the music and lyrics to "The Wiz."
