I agree with professional and rigorous standards for teachers but eliminating tenure is a bad idea because it threatens to undermine the job security of those who exemplify higher teaching standards, not just those who don't. This is would be step backwards.
There are requirements in many states for teachers to maintain professional development and a certain level of expertise. No child left behind doesn't work, as an educator you should know this. If you don't you are too far removed from the front lines of education to see it.
Great point. It seems like an obvious problem in education. Teacher unions have such a stranglehold on the education system, it seems like they want to prevent that from being a focus... If I ever have kids I'm not raising them in the states. It's ridiculous.
Teacher unions do NOT have a stranglehold on education. Politicians do. They won't let teachers teach without filling out numerous forms in quadruplicate and preventing teachers from holding the student accountable to learn what is being taught. It's unreal that in a number of states you can't flunk a student without parental permission. Hey, if they don't make the grade give them another shot at it. That's why when he's in high school, "Johnny can't read!"
Why do schools in America get to be monopolies? The teachers union totally dodges free market principles left right and center in education. That's where poor quality comes from, not an F shortage and some extra paperwork. Maybe if there were more decent teachers someone would have taught johnny to read when he was supposed to, then we wouldn't even be talking about giving F's.
The Union's control Public ED through their strangle hold on collective bargain, and the demand that all teachers be paid the same rate, regardless of academic discipline.
A Math or Chem teacher is more valuable than a PE or History teacher. That is a fact, and is also the reason why US students are so bad in math and science.
"Social Promotion" is a major plank of the NEA program. "we can't burden teachers with various age groups, that's too hard!"

Sarah, my 1st question for you is how long did you teach in the public schools before you became a Prof of ED?
2nd, NCLB is absolutly a good 1st step, but needs to be expanded to require National Standards (like all the good education nations of the world)
3rd, unless we can remove or reduce the control of the Teacher's Unions, there will NEVER be any meaningful reform of teacher quality or competence.
Sorry, but I also hold Teacher Colleges responsible for this mess! Dewey was bad!

erruhum, you are absolutely wrong,
