It's pretty arrogant of Gervais to say that he wasn't poking fun. Obviousluy that's what he did, just admit it. A Christian will say "thanks to God", an atheist won't say "I'm going to thank my belief in nothing". Ridiculous.
Of course atheists can be good. However the moral foundation for why being good is inherently good, for atheists, is absent. For an atheist morality is relative; guided by trendiness or usefulness. Usefulness is not a moral code and even Nietzsche admitted this.
