P.s.. The reason "we" in NZ .. simply "drilled" new holes .. to either side of the old holes.. or on new diagonals .. was this .. ALL of our sleepers had a preset CHAMFERRED BEVEL "adzed" out of the sleepers.. which meant they could "not" simply be short_drifted" under the rails .. unlike YOUR SLEEPERS .. that so obviously were ALL flat .. "with" NO ANGLED ADZE WORK (which incidentally "slightly" inclines the railhead INWARDS .. thus eliminating a LOT of unessesary rail head wear)
U know ..U'd achieve EXACTLY the same result .. by JUST shifting the sleepers (drifting 3" or 4") which would be about HALF of the "rail width" (either way) .. so that the "NEW" position of the bedplate & dogspikes .. was thus half & half .. between the OLD HOLES -- without needing to "swap" those sleepers .. end for end -- which would SAVE YOU -- about 110 secs every two minutes
& ... get this .. OUR impactor .. was a rotary impactor .. for driving SCREWS (not silly OLD STYLE dog spikes.. - Hell those things were useless with NO "vertical" holding grip (whereas the spring steel goose neck spikes .. now they were a right bitch to drive.. as if u didn't hit them things .. precisely about 30deg forward of the top .. them would"sprang" away off.. into the undergrowth (often taking half Ur shin skin with them- and they had to be driven .. by hand .. with 8 to 15 LB hammers)
Wow & ? WHAT A HUGE HYDRAULIC HEAD U POOR BZTDS HAD TO USE. Man I'm glad that OUR "NZR's proline hydraluic heads werte barely 3 to 4" deep & about 6" diameter.. AND that the NZR's "impact" driver head .. (being the biggest & thus heaviest piece) .. itself was ONLY about a foot long & 8" dia.. whereas the NZR's Auger head .. was barely 3" dia & a foot long - with a 14" long -- 5/8" drill auger fitted
That hammer drive wrench (using YOURheavy machine) was achieved far easier by the NZR utilising small B&S petrol engines driving Hydraulic pumps (& with a holding tank) in a 3 wheel outrigger frame on alluminium wheels- that ONE MAN could lift clear of the track or simply drag along by it's hoses (& using a shifting spanner- could CHANGE the working head from impact driver to boring auger & back again in seconds- thus a 6 man crew could "replace" nearly 1/8 mile a day BY HAND compared to Ur B/S)
You're probably right. A lot of people don't realize that ties usually rot on the top long before the bottom. By turning it over, you extend its' usable by almost double. There are times you find that both sides are bad, and that means a replacement.

This line looks abandoned. Are they driving new spikes into it to reopen it?
