@ASeasonedWitch Well I was really stretching the truth when I made that comment. The truth is I haven't played that song in over 30 years. As a matter of fact I haven't played anything hardly. I just put it down one day and never picked it back up. My guitar used to go with me everywhere. I have been thinking about picking it up again. I still have an old classical sitting in the corner of the living room.
I heard this piece for the first time watching Sesame Street with my kids many years ago. Later heard it on the radio and called to ask for the piece number, bought it and now I listen to it all the time. My favorite of all times. GREAT PIECE!
nobody can pay like him. nobody. im a classicaly trained guitarist and i recognize that this isnt as technically proper perhaps as a "real" classical guitarist, but there is nobody alive who can say as much with a guitar as he can (or play so well in as many genres!). his sound, tone, technique (though not "proper classical"), and emotional connection are unsurpassed, and there is something else about his playing but its not sometihng that can be described with words. as he says. when words fail
@muzikislife9 I totally agree! Given the same piece of music, a classically trained guitarist will be pleased by different sounds compared to the rock guitarist (or jazz guitarist, etc.). Thus, there will be two different "playings" of the piece; neither necessarily "incorrect". Howe's interpretation of the concerto is acoustically superb.
No one should expect Steve Howe to play classical like Segovia, or any other genre like anyone else. The fact that he never took a lesson in his life and taught himself to play (which is why he uses such unique and unconventional fingerings), makes it all the more amazing that he plays the way he does. He is unique. One doesn't win Guitar Player's Magazine's Guitarist of the Year 10 years in a row for nothing.
Steve Howe was ahead of his time when Yes came out and now has transcended the blasaie mixture of musicians of today to still enthrall an audience with an acoustic guitar
Magnifique !! Un Guitar Heroe à part entière !! Merci à helirazor1971 pour l'info car je ne savais pas que Steve Howe avait couvert Innuendo de Queen à la guitare acoustique avec Brian May.
Superbe musicien, super technique, super!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Alex Lifeson, Robert Fripp, Martin Barre (of Jethro Tull), even guys like Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, and especially Steve Howe never get the fame and respect they deserve. Progressive style rock/fusion guitar is the most amazing and innovative thing to happen to music in the last 50 years. Prog is too loud for the jazz crowd, and too wierd for the casual listener of rock. But any real musician can appreciate the techniques and tonal innovations of these guys.
Steve Howe is a great musician.. I don't know (or care) if he is classically trained or otherwise... His performances (recorded) provided me with joy and hope in times of my life when things were really bad. Thats what musicians do for other people.. and at that he is truly great.
Steve Howe is a phenomenal guitarist in his own right, but classical guitarist he isn't. It lacks timing and feel, and while I realize that really wasn't the audience and he gave it his best shot, I think perhaps Steve should leave that to classical guitarists.
This is one of the best bands ever from the 60's to present! This band deserves to go down as one of the greatest rock and roll bands-Period! And if they're not in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame, then they should throw all of the rest out and end this pathetic excuse for a place that only places the greatest musicians in it! Peace, BobbyK
The Rock and Roll hall of fame is so NOT rock and roll. Great composers and musicians don't hand out trophies to each other in some commercial laden circle jerk fest. Fuck whomever had that stupid idea...The Sex Pistols were right about them.
@hellfiredonkey i've played both ways and bottom line is it's not unique or mesmerizing, it's inferior tone and the only reason he does'nt switch is it takes a very long time to adjust and he doesn't want to admit to himself or others that he's scared of change, but i promise from experience that he would sound more dynamic and fuller if he utilized his nails, what's mesmerizing is his musicality despite his stubborness
@ErikStephenGilgen Steve uses a near unique technique quite often combining bare fingers and flat pick, which provides incredible versatility and "feel". He goes back and forth near seemlessly between classical
folk and electric guitars. This can not be matched with just "fingernails"(which would be torn to shreds on metal strings, and clumsy on electric) nor any other style. I suspect Steve Howe will not be approaching you nor I for guitar lessons.
honest evaluation of vivaldi's concerto in d, pros are that performance is technically sound. no missed notes and very slight mis accentuations. incredible emotion in slurs. cons are alternating bass counterpoint that belongs in country folk and too much rubato. if i was the composer i'd give it a 9.3 out of 10. and for those of you that are thinking "well mr. judgemental why don't you post your own video or shut up". i have. click on my name and listen to my version and evaluate it :)
of course SH is able to play with the rythm of a metronome, being a rock musician, but he feels vivaldi in a romantic way; may be not filological, but there have been a lot of ways of playing vivaldi...
Mood For A Day here shows that his music was true music, even with a single guitar it does sense

He seems humbled that so many people are so touched by something he created so long ago. The ending is very reassuring, like the last thing you would say to a child as they drifted off to sleep.
Well, it doesn't really matter to me if Steve is classically trained or not. I'm no musician by any stretch of the imagination. But I do know a talented guitarist when I see one. I've been listening to Yes music since 5th grade (1970) and will always be a fan.
Steve is certainly a real credit to the generation of musician's who came out of England at the time-most of them seduced by the blues. Mr. Howe fortunately for all of us-was not. He heard Chet Atkins and decided to incorporate a country fingerpicking style into his rock-n-roll. His originality, talent and command of the guitar would take him places most of the so called 'rock god's' have dared to tread.
No, Steve doesn't play classical as well as Segovia, Bream, Williams etc. So what? He wasn't classically trained for one thing. Neither does he play jazz like Django, or blues & rock like Jeff and Jimmy. What he does is transcend the boundaries of all those genres like no other. He is pretty much unique, as a player and a composer. Not to mention how influential he's been over 40+ years. Anyone who thinks Steve Howe isn't "up there" with the guitar-greats doesn't understand guitar music.
@Fist2112 well said........i think the fact he wasn't classically trained allowed him to
traverse all the styles you spoke of. Most people would give anything to play near his skill level. not to mention music he has written for solo guitar. the hall of fame is a joke.....no yes, deep purple, king crimson. (at 1:18 i think he plays a wrong note. i have listened to this piece for 40 years. even steve howe is human!)
@Fist2112 100% in agreement - when did you see Clapton play that lol And Steve never had a lesson in his life which is remarkable as the only thing he stears away from is blues scales - mmm elementary my dear Watson. But he can play just about everything - greatest ever in my onion sorry opinion
@Fist2112 VERY well said, Fist! I couldn't agree more about Howe's playing. I will say that he's extremely unfriendly, having met him at a Yes "meet and greet" that cost LOTS of money. He refused to speak or make eye contact, but that's a different issue. He's a phenomenal guitarist who synthesizes styles/ genres in the greatest way.
@4eyed4stringer That's a shame about the meet and greet. I met him once after a gig, and whilst not unfriendly, he was very quiet and seemed uneasy surrounded by his fans.
@Fist2112 Anyway I thin that groups like yes, made real polyphony, not the kind of fake one some groups have, when being with a filarmonic orchestra, but the real one.
@Fist2112 Well said. Steve Howe is the reason that I switched from steel string to classical guitar about fifteen years ago. Steve's "Mood For A Day" was one of the songs that drove me nuts trying to learn when I was coming up as a young musician. Still can't play it to this day, but I appreciate his playing.
Steve is one of the best guitarist in any genre of music. We get caught up sometimes in trying to categorize people and it's not fair. Everyone brings their unique personality to music.
@Fist2112 I completely agreewith you..I have finished an instant ago..listening to John Wiliams` version..and I prefer Howe`s..a million times..though Williams deserves all my respet and admiration..but his version ..lacks of soul...!!
@flavy1000 You must have been wasted when you wrote this! maybe your preference is howe but a million times? sure howe's got that whole virtuoso embellishment stuff goin on but it's obvious that williams is ocd with tone and timing, besides williams has plenty of flourishes in his largo, and for god's sake he's had to climb the mountain of guitar + orchestra, that takes tons of "soul" and courage. you should be ashamed.....very ashamed....
No, I`m by no means ashamed of what I`ve written..and I was on my perfect senses..
Whata I mant..is that..Though I like Wiliams performance..and Know that he is a respected and talented virtuoso..for his music lack of soul..after having heard a piece by Howe...
Williams maybe probably "perfect"..yes,but he`s too perfect...
I'm not a guitar player, but I am a visual artist. I know his technique is great, maybe not as good as Segovia or whoever, but those technique masters havnt done what Steve has either. What counts is beauty, power, grace, and the ability to compose original music and thats why Steve is so special. In visual terms think of Monet for example - his technique is good, but he is special because of how beautiful and unique his stuff is.
listen to segovia or julian bream play this piece, as you say, and come say the same thing. You're saying that a classical master plays less beautifully then this?
@thejugglenaut91 I'm not saying other people play guitar in a less beautiful way. Steve is not the only great guitarist. I'm just saying he is one of the graets because of what I said before. He didnt write this song, true, I was commenting more on him in general - he writes most of his own stuff which is really what makes him special. I was just watching a thing on Les paul, he made people in the audience cry cause he did such a beatuful job.
Yes is the most FAB band. Been a fan for too many years to say. Steve Howe learned to play in Heaven. One of the most talented artists in the music world, absolutely!
@harveydents The rock and roll hall of fame is the biggest joke in the music industry. I went there a few years ago, and it was probably one of the most boring museums I've ever been too. Half of the museum is dedicated to their artist of the month. it was Bob Dylans turn when I went. Thats cool if you are a Dylan fan, but if you aren't, it's lame as hell.
@idclip5 I`m as disappointed in the hall as you seem to be but I still like the concept, found it to be quite cool, but am disappointed in the seemingly randomness of inductees. Yes belongs as does Chicago (who pioneered a new fusion of jazz and rock and had over forty years of hits) and yet I don`t see why the Stooges are in as besides being outrageous on stage they seemed to offer nothing musically that I found interesting or creative....
@harveydents Because the RRHoF is run by a little club of scenesters that despise prog rock and anything to do with it, despite many of today's bands they all but fellate were inspired by bands like Yes to pick up instruments in the first place. Rush is another band, hate 'em or love 'em, that belong and never will for the same reasons.
I agree with the Sex Pistols, who were inducted, but didn't show, who called the RRHoF a "piss stain".
I hear you my friend. The RRHOF is a joke. I like your idea of a new HOF - membership by vitrue of popularity and/or musicianship, not by some illogical, intangible selection process. Rush has 14 platinum and 24 gold albums and they're not members either. It's a farce!
@Relayer6a And for Rush to get in too....they FINALLY let them in this year...not that Rush could give a damn, they've got music to make, not pose for photos LOL
@harveydents The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is an insult to the world!!!!! No Yes, no Moody Blues, but Madonna & Run DMC...........I get so pissed!!! Absolute stupidity!!!!!
@harveydents I can only conclude it is because they are known as a prog band. Rush isn't in the Hall of Fame as well, last time I checked. Therefore it must a joke or something.
Actually compared to a true classical player (Julian Bream, Christopher Parkening) with Steve you hear a lot of crunchy notes and some questionable timing that they would never tolerate. Again though, Steve's great musicality makes the issue of his technique less important - always been one of my favorite musicians.
My favorite guitarist. Question that may have been asked before, but I have not seen an answer: is Steve unwell?
I saw him play with Yes in Feb 2010, and he was very still, very little expression, and extremely thin. Just concerned - not looking for any cruel or dumb answers.
Howe can be sloppy, and his self-taught classical guitar technique is questionable at best; but none of that matters - his sheer musicality makes one of my favorite players
Spot on. How tired I am to see the constant arguments like "my guitarist is better then YOUR guitarist" on You Tube. They don't get it. Music is not only personal and exists because it exists, it transcends quantification.
You are right! Music is not a competition! You can love different tyoes of music and musicians. You can't quantify music, if it gives you emotion any music or genre is valid.
@Kerkewachter; you obviously know nothing about guitarplayer. I am playing fot 35 years and can tell you ythat comparing Jan Akkerman to Stev Howe makes no sense at all. You seem to have no knowledge about guitar technics or different styles at all.
I know both Steve Howe and Jan Akkerman (I',m even Dutch...) but I really really prefer Steve...... much more emotion, more styles. Watch the video with Jan Akkerman and Paco de Lucia.... and you can see there are better players than Jan Akkerman.... Paco is certainly one of them.... and in my opion Steve too... but Jan is not a bad guiterist at all... only not on the same "level"...
Hi gtrrobster, he was a member of FOCUS, a dutch group of the 70's. He still tours, and many videos can be found on you-tube. I wasn't saying Steve Howe was bad - he's great., but Akkerman is genius. Look up Focus eruption.
The only guitarist I have heard that does a better job on the Vivaldi is Segovia and he was a Classically trained guitarist! I could listen to Steve Howe play the guitar all day. He is a GOD of the guitar to my way of thinking
omg, just heard his songs today... he is AMAZING. his guitar skills are amazing... and the wide range of music he plays... AND he's over 60 o_o i can only wish i'll be half as talented as he is when i'm 60 XD
Your the fifth person to correct me. I searched Mood for a Day and actually just caught the second part of the vid when I responded to someone and told them that it "wasn't an interpretation. he wrote it" I meant Mood for a Day. Now I feel like an idiot! LOL
The purists will say that to play this peice to perfection you have to be seated which is probably coreect but who cares this is Steve Howe and it sounds great to me
Fripp is an insane guitar player. He does stuff that nobody can do, but I'd rather listen to Steve any day. Steve is a beautiful guitar player who plays with feeling & emotion that Fripp will probably never understand. I love 'watching' Fripp play, but I love listening to, & watching, Steve play.
I love you Steve.....for your versatility, your understanding of music, the beauty of your tone ......You are awesome

@Fist2112 100% in agreement - when did you see Clapton play that lol And Steve never had a lesson in his life which is remarkable as the only thing he stears away from is blues scales - mmm elementary my dear Watson. But he can play just about everything - greatest ever in my onion sorry opinion
MoogMcMahon 1 year ago
@Fist2112 VERY well said, Fist! I couldn't agree more about Howe's playing. I will say that he's extremely unfriendly, having met him at a Yes "meet and greet" that cost LOTS of money. He refused to speak or make eye contact, but that's a different issue. He's a phenomenal guitarist who synthesizes styles/ genres in the greatest way.
4eyed4stringer 1 year ago
@4eyed4stringer That's a shame about the meet and greet. I met him once after a gig, and whilst not unfriendly, he was very quiet and seemed uneasy surrounded by his fans.
Fist2112 1 year ago
@Fist2112 Anyway I thin that groups like yes, made real polyphony, not the kind of fake one some groups have, when being with a filarmonic orchestra, but the real one.
carlfelster 1 year ago

And Howe..itr`s pretty full of it..
Genious!!
flavy1000 1 year ago
@flavy1000 You must have been wasted when you wrote this! maybe your preference is howe but a million times? sure howe's got that whole virtuoso embellishment stuff goin on but it's obvious that williams is ocd with tone and timing, besides williams has plenty of flourishes in his largo, and for god's sake he's had to climb the mountain of guitar + orchestra, that takes tons of "soul" and courage. you should be ashamed.....very ashamed....
ErikStephenGilgen 1 year ago
@ErikStephenGilgen
Undestood?Thanks...though..

I'm not a guitar player, but I am a visual artist. I know his technique is great, maybe not as good as Segovia or whoever, but those technique masters havnt done what Steve has either. What counts is beauty, power, grace, and the ability to compose original music and thats why Steve is so special. In visual terms think of Monet for example - his technique is good, but he is special because of how beautiful and unique his stuff is.
dfreedAlakazam123 1 year ago
listen to segovia or julian bream play this piece, as you say, and come say the same thing. You're saying that a classical master plays less beautifully then this?
He didn't compose this either, vivaldi did.
thejugglenaut91 1 year ago
@thejugglenaut91 I'm not saying other people play guitar in a less beautiful way. Steve is not the only great guitarist. I'm just saying he is one of the graets because of what I said before. He didnt write this song, true, I was commenting more on him in general - he writes most of his own stuff which is really what makes him special. I was just watching a thing on Les paul, he made people in the audience cry cause he did such a beatuful job.

once again...why the FUCK isnt YES IN THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME???
harveydents 2 years ago 59
@harveydents The rock and roll hall of fame is the biggest joke in the music industry. I went there a few years ago, and it was probably one of the most boring museums I've ever been too. Half of the museum is dedicated to their artist of the month. it was Bob Dylans turn when I went. Thats cool if you are a Dylan fan, but if you aren't, it's lame as hell.
idclip5 1 year ago
@idclip5 I`m as disappointed in the hall as you seem to be but I still like the concept, found it to be quite cool, but am disappointed in the seemingly randomness of inductees. Yes belongs as does Chicago (who pioneered a new fusion of jazz and rock and had over forty years of hits) and yet I don`t see why the Stooges are in as besides being outrageous on stage they seemed to offer nothing musically that I found interesting or creative....
pilesovinyl 1 year ago
@harveydents Because the RRHoF is run by a little club of scenesters that despise prog rock and anything to do with it, despite many of today's bands they all but fellate were inspired by bands like Yes to pick up instruments in the first place. Rush is another band, hate 'em or love 'em, that belong and never will for the same reasons.
I agree with the Sex Pistols, who were inducted, but didn't show, who called the RRHoF a "piss stain".
rk6314 1 year ago
@harveydents
Yes in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame? Too Progressive!
No big deal if not. I would hate to see ‘Yes’ next to some weird punker or gangster rapper. RRHoF is a watered-down, cheap affair.
Just remember it's all about the music!
Madonna was in diapers when Yes was doing world tours. Shame on the plastic executive twits. It's time to establish a new Hall of Fame.
Interesting math... Ramones get in with 1 gold album... Yes has 9 gold and a few platinum with supreme musicianship.
pithor 1 year ago 2
@pithor
I hear you my friend. The RRHOF is a joke. I like your idea of a new HOF - membership by vitrue of popularity and/or musicianship, not by some illogical, intangible selection process. Rush has 14 platinum and 24 gold albums and they're not members either. It's a farce!
Fist2112 1 year ago
@harveydents Because the people on the Hall of Fame committee are a bunch of assholes with no taste in music? Could that be it?

davidstep1956 1 year ago

Because their musical taste is obviously in their mouths. The same reason it took so long for Led Zep to get in.

GPWS339 1 year ago
@harveydents I can only conclude it is because they are known as a prog band. Rush isn't in the Hall of Fame as well, last time I checked. Therefore it must a joke or something.

I thought this was VILVALDI four seassons?
harveydents 2 years ago
Actually compared to a true classical player (Julian Bream, Christopher Parkening) with Steve you hear a lot of crunchy notes and some questionable timing that they would never tolerate. Again though, Steve's great musicality makes the issue of his technique less important - always been one of my favorite musicians.

My favorite guitarist. Question that may have been asked before, but I have not seen an answer: is Steve unwell?
I saw him play with Yes in Feb 2010, and he was very still, very little expression, and extremely thin. Just concerned - not looking for any cruel or dumb answers.
jennymedia 2 years ago
No, I hope not, anyway. He's looked like that as far back as I can remember.
He's a vegetarian, too, which doesn't help!
Fist2112 2 years ago
I agree with you Jenny...I've been a YES fan since about 1970. I just think he is getting older along with the rest of us.
craneman15438 2 years ago
Howe can be sloppy, and his self-taught classical guitar technique is questionable at best; but none of that matters - his sheer musicality makes one of my favorite players
bbmusic1 2 years ago
@bbmusic1 His sloppiness is kind of a trademark, it's characteristic of his playing. I think some of it sounds great.

Spot on. How tired I am to see the constant arguments like "my guitarist is better then YOUR guitarist" on You Tube. They don't get it. Music is not only personal and exists because it exists, it transcends quantification.

@zackgreer
point made nicely, my friend.

You seem to have no knowledge about guitar technics or different styles at all.
berrycccc 2 years ago
Steve Howe has always been in a world all his own. Freakishly talented, a musicians musician. God was quite generous to him...
tonecommander 2 years ago 4
With enough practice and dedication, you too could play like this.
Lunarmoonbase2 2 years ago
Genius.
ERDGHY 2 years ago 2
I know both Steve Howe and Jan Akkerman (I',m even Dutch...) but I really really prefer Steve...... much more emotion, more styles. Watch the video with Jan Akkerman and Paco de Lucia.... and you can see there are better players than Jan Akkerman.... Paco is certainly one of them.... and in my opion Steve too... but Jan is not a bad guiterist at all... only not on the same "level"...
kerkerwachter 2 years ago 2
It's not really important who is better, there both great,but..........Jan was voted world's best, this must have a reason.

Hi gtrrobster, he was a member of FOCUS, a dutch group of the 70's. He still tours, and many videos can be found on you-tube. I wasn't saying Steve Howe was bad - he's great., but Akkerman is genius. Look up Focus eruption.
Take care
