@VoodooPolitico give credit where credit is due...im sure Jason Isbell himself has seen this and was disappointed like me...you know how it feels to work your ass off for someone else to profit off of...i know i do...i love the song but im not postin bs videos of it on youtube...but either way great song and a great live performer...much respect for guys like him
@chaucerg He did make there best albums in my opinion, or was on them. I don't think there's hard feelings, he's full of talent. I wish he would of just made a couple solo records like Patterson, but hell I don't know the story. I know there still great and Jason's making a hell of a go, I love his keyboard player from Son Volt.
this video is a big slap in the face to jason isbell...where is he? i can hear him singin but i can't seem to find him at all in the video....rediculous....dislike
My brother turned me on to these guys last year. I'm from North Alabama and alot of their songs have places i go to, or been to. Thats pretty cool. They need more air time from our local stations
At 46, I have been a Rock & Roll fan all my life and have enjoyed every sub-genre and trend that came along. But now I mostly listen to more 'organic' bands like The DBTs. After all the artifice and bombast of so many bands and styles, nothing really works for me like honest, simple beautiful songs like this. Good Lord, is this a heart-wrenchingly gorgeous song!
@KoenHead At 15, I think that this band is simply incredible. Jason Isbell is a phenomenal song writer. I'm glad he's doing so well alone but now that the bassist quit for DBT he should join the DBT again!
@blinkbunnyLP good song definately. Prolific isn't the word you want here; prolific mean high in volume, as in 'Stephen King' is a prolific writer of novels. Terrific, maybe, but I think you were going for 'profound' which means 'deep rich in meaning'.
Still, I agree; a very good song. BUT "In any genre, of all time"? No. Check out Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Robert Earl Keen. THEN tell me what you think.
@newbiefromnewbie I'vv been a fan of every artist you've mentioned for a long time. Jason Isbell's "Goddamn Lonely Love" is, IMO, one of the best songs ever written. It ranks right up there with Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" and "Alexandra's Leaving."
@7channer which applies here... as the song produces a large amount of emotion, pleasure, etc. Too bad you didn't think a little deeper before you posted.
Hey I hear Booker T and the DBT are releasing a new cd .. with Neil Young makin an appearance on it. They will be performing in Chicago, Petrillo, on the Fourth of July! Thanks for this excellent post!
Well, he's having the time of his life with the "400 Unit", recording every one of the songs he wants to (not the ones voted in by his band-mates), and he's no longer in close-quarters contact with his ex-wife while he earns his living.
this song is haunting me for years, ever since Dirty South came out. Goddamn you Americans, for having a chance to see them perform live. Why do they never come to goddamn Europe?
The majority of them are from Muscle shoals, Alabama. They have been around since the mid 90's. There first band was "Adam's House cat". Then the "DBT" came along a few years after that. I think now most of them live in Athens, Ga.
Lost love is such a bitch but this song wraps it up in a warm blanket and hits all the right buttons. If you wanna listen to a great decemberists song try eli the barrow boy off picaresque or oceanside of the 5 songs ep
I can't believe I just got turned on to this band a 6 months ago...and I will feel that I owe the person who provided me with that first CD a huge debt of grattitude every time I listen to them.
@shelleylee62 every time I listen to them I ask myself this question: "WHY doesn't EVERYONE know of the Drive-By Truckers?". In my opinion they are one of the best bands of the last 10-20 years, all genres confounded. I don't get why they aren't at least a 100 times more popular. Seems like real talent has been forsaken nowadays. Sad...
So beautiful... the lyrics are very high standard, as you always can expect by these guys. DBT is the best band around nowadays along with The Decemberists.
pretty different bands you are comparing thats like saying Dissection has nothing on Isis, Necrophaghist vs. Mogwai etc. two totally different worlds of music.
I just saw them in Tucson on the 5th. They are NOT breaking up, Jason just left/got kicked out. It's a shame cause the stage presence of Jon Neff is incredibly low key, almost like he's not even there. I miss Jason, he's a great song writer and guitar player. But DBT is Patterson's band, really. Anybody who disagrees should see them live..... they were AWESOME. Even w/o Jason.
