  • we are not pirates... pirates attack ships

  • when you steal you take the original when you pirate you make a copy...

  • SOPA just got passed, should make this into a far more 'interesting' debate! Oops, hope I don't get my internet cut off for saying that :o

  • If you share or sell pirated movies, games or music it's illegal. If you keep it for yourself it's perfectly fine.

  • @iRHAPEzombiies true.. You decide rather you wanna support the makers or just download their stuff..

I myself love 70-80's music.. I can by now tell you that they made there money back then! Should i still buy their albums? I can't find a reason why i should..

  • on repeat at 0:20

  • I download pirated/cracked/ripped files but I also buy things I really like. For example I like to download a game to try it before I buy it for myself. And piracy is ilegal only if you burn CD's/DVD's and then sell them .But if you download and keep for yourself it's ok.

  • Blurring the line between piracy and plagiarism. It's even ridiculous to even think that Youtube contributes to piracy, given all of the ways that information is actually shared.

Even worse, the argument for 'stealing', implying that something is lost when content is copied, or that money is owed to people that list a price next to their stuff.

    Ah well.

  • just cracked black ops! lol

  • fuck piracy i file share torrents all the time

  • I dont think its the leading cause, but I do think it plays a factor, there are quite a few videos on how to obtain movies and games illegally, and I even asked one time where I can get Arma 2 and some guy responded Pirate Bay, I of course didnt. lol

  • oops, playing mario kart off a burnt disc on wii... joking..

  • Well Chris, not saying that I do this, but techincally anyone could steal music off youtube without using a flash download add on for browsers. If someone wanted to take music without being caught via IP, they could easily fullscreen the video and record the video with fraps. Then they could simply take the audio from the video they recorded, put it into a video editor, and save it only as an audio file. Just saying it would be that simple. People please don't take my idea into consideration.

  • @kasumisman Ahem...VEVO!

I can just take Audacity, put to stereo mix/What U Hear (for Creative card users) and record.

    As simple as that!

  • For years the record companies overcharged for cd's and other media. When CD-r devices came out they shrugged them off, the same happened with the mp3 explosion and now they're paying the price.

  • @1:34 I agree totally.

  • i remember napster ahahah

  • Connecting with you from Empire Ave. Am I the last one to make it over here? LOL

  • ya. they have youtube to mp3. its very easy to just get music for free

  • No, because Google doesn't cause the piracy. Selected people do.

  • This has been happening for a long time. I remember back to the days of radios and tape players. Intent and distribution are important issues.

  • if you think about it all hollywoods is is nothing but piracy

  • I understand unless its a huge company like Microsoft. They'll do just fine without my money.

  • I paused at 0:22 to allow for buffer its funny looking

  • Pirates...they have been around for a while in many forms...from the high seas to the to the Basic C

  • Is the Internet Causing Piracy?

  • The Piracy Scare, slows the internet down, so many people are watching, to see what a internet doer is doing on line, is He or She into the download of something or not!. This is why the Goggle idea of a computer is so cool, no Hard Drive.I do not like a slow internet, I am a fast reader or speed freak online so much to see or read, why download and store stuff, so much is wrong about it, that is goggle job to store infro not the user, the user is the reader not the hoarder of infro. Thanks

  • @lasay365 hdd only influences around 33% TOPS of your internet bottleneck. I have literally tested this on a 5400 rpm ide 60 gig hdd on connected to the same ddr 3 1600mhz 8 gigs of ram, same physicaly gigabit speed wired ethernet connected to 6 meg CONcast docsis 3.0 cable modem & stopwatch timed & used professional browsing speed testing software to time how fast google.com on google chrome browser pulls up. 5400 rpm hdd vs 10k sata2 raptor= 1.75 seconds for 5400rpm, 1.35 secs. your welcome

  • @lasay365 also. 10k velociraptor sata II vs sata II mlc mushkin callisto deluxe ( sandforce 1200 controller and the ssd is 90% full for the record) raptor = 1.35 seconds, ssd= .75 seconds on WORST results out of 10 straight back to back to back...etc..etc tests with and without hdd caching on ( i know it doesn't matter with sandforce controller thus i always leave caching off but just to test it anyways). also all tests down using ONBOARD gigabit ethernet port on motherboard.

  • great! now i can tell people that youtube made me do it

  • The thing is, copyright laws have become so out of date nobody knows what the hell is going on anymore. There needs to be a reformat of copyright law that can extend to the internet as well as for offline stuff. People keep whining about WMG, UMG and Sony muting/deleting music off YouTube but they have every right to. It's THEIR property. It's like someone uploading your private sex tape, you'd want it taken off the net too.

  • No, ThePirateBay is.

  • I merely buy my media because I feel that if I value and cherish it, then it's worth my money.

  • @Netrex44 Everything is legal if you are willing to pay.

  • Software is insanely overpriced.

If Microsoft Office was $50, let's just say the stores would need more receipt paper.

Honestly, it really should be done with a lot of software because if they weren't hundreds of dollars, the amount of purchases would skyrocket. Everyone would have Office 2010 and Windows 7.

In hardware, they cannot really go under a certain price that would match their expenses. There is no expense in software except the company's one-time costs such as licensing

    Everyone wins

  • piracy , bootlegging , copyright infringement is theft plain and simple !

  • that's a killer screen saver.

  • Youtube downloader + Video converter / Music converter. Nuff said

  • @LogicShadow flv2mp3.com

  • For gods sake Chris, piracy is not stealing! This has been discussed countless times and it almost always boils down to stealing implies the original owner has lost something it previously had.

More to the point of this video we _need_ an easy way to "pirate" things, what if people could silence news to the point where the news stations attempts to remove every trace of it's news reports on the story? Then how will you prove they initially did air the story and acknowledged it did happen?

  • @Djhg2000 Stupid character limit...

Anyway, the slightest case of conspiracy leads to the need of piracy. What had WiKileaks been without it's pirated documents?

  • its hard to enforce it, but truly internet censoring is not the way to do it.

  • So basically long story short, youtube enables Jack Sparrows...

  • @MrSpore15 Best comment in 2011

  • @MrSpore15 "He is a good man!"

  • i may not upload stuf i dont own, but i figured out how to download it from youtube

  • click 3,4,5,8. this video is better in 1080p

  • @sinnoh2014 this video doesnt even have 1080p

  • @rysliv that is the point

  • Even i prefer to buy a all the Media and Software Legally if and only if i had the Money even i don't like to use pirated stuff but what to do ? but seriously if i get rich one day i guarantee i will not even go to that *sites (Torrent) any more ! i am sorry developers forgive me ! :( my income is 400 $ per month

  • As far as i'm concerned, there are times when i see it as more acceptable. The main thing i have no problem pirating is things from Adobe. They charge way too much for anyone who isn't professional to get hold of. For instance, if they were to sell the software for much much cheaper, then they might end up with more sales. I'd pay for CS5 if I could, but i'm a penniless student.

  • in one hand the producer looses money because ppl are not buying it. On the other hand it acts as good marketing if content is good. That way many more will be interested in the content and possibly buy it or parts of it.

  • No, but Viacom, WMG and UMG are dirty whore companies.

  • what if someone, such as me, has no conscience?

  • @CarpaceEater : then I hope you don't rape babies and and chop puppies for your salad.

  • @moonlightkisu i do as a matter of fact

  • @CarpaceEater : awesome bro.

  • I have a question for a future vid. Do you think Hard Drives will become obsolete in the near future? If so will solid state drives come down in price and become more commonly used in computers?

  • YouTube cracks down on stuff like that. Big companies are always DMCAing vids here lol. Even to stuff they don't own. One time i saw disney removed a captain planet episode. Rather you see that as a good thing or a bad thing that's debatable... But they don't own it. Ted Turner owned that show. lol

  • I think Youtube Downloader is the blame of piracy.

  • Some is covered under "Fair Use" law. But Youtube does not recognize this law.

  • i don't condone piracy at all. i rent/buy my stuff through the proper channels. but 99% of the stuff that is pirated is popular tv shows, movies, and music. downloading them doesn't hurt the artists or actors. who it hurts are the huge mega corporations who sell it and advertise it. and they are happy to exploit the consumers and overcharge for stuff. so i cant say i feel any sympathy for them. just sayin

  • No, I don't.

  • utorrent is the cause of piracy lol

  • Piracy start with :

1º-The "pirate" buyed a product, and posted in a download site that you need to pay for download it(you pay the same as the product but you can download all contents on it).

2º- An hacker hacked an account and donwload it for free.

3º- the hacker sets up an site where ads pay to the hacker.

4º- the hacker posts the content for free download, but the ads on hes hacker site pay him for example every 100 downloads.

    5º- the hacker is arrested

6º- the hacker hacks the court house

  • I have bootleg vinyl records that were recordings of live concerts. Pirating is nothing new.

  • I buy music, and the software I ...get is only what I need, because - honestly - it's not worth the money until I can get one for a student price.

  • No, it's just people don't know how to control themselves by Downloading YT music..

  • Yeah YouTube to mp3 and stuff like that is just another way btw how long has torrents been used lol

  • /watch?v=D6_ZqPcNemI

  • You remind me of master from brave little toaster not gonna lie

  • I would not say it causes piracy, it just escalates it.

  • good points raised, @ChrisPirillo! As for me, Yes youtube cause piracy in some ways.

  • i always buy songs off walmart lol

  • propaganda at its finest!!!!

  • wouldn't limewire and frostwire and all other P2P programs are they some source of piracy?

  • Downloading music for free is fine. It's like someone giving you their CD to check out some songs that you might like.

Now, as long as the song uploader bought the music themselves then it's fine. If they didn't, then it's stealing.

  • @mankyman6 When you lend a cd, only two or three copies of the cd are probably going to be made (the two or three people you lend it too). If you distribute a song on a file sharing website, it may reach thousands of people.

  • @mankyman6 when you "buy" a CD, you are buying 1 license for that CD, so (saying you haven't copied the CD, or ripped it to your ipod and computer) when you "lend" it to your friend, you no longer have access to that CD, THAT is legal, however if you go and distribute the CD by making copies of your original, that is illegal.

  • Youtube does not cause piracy, but they do make it easier.

  • Chris, a true pirate will always share.

Don't you try to convert us, you propagandic son of a b****.

True pirates never sell the pirated stuff, they rather tell people how to pirate, and NOT sell.

  • Awesome screensaver effect at 6:22

  • I once edited one of Chris's videos for fun, apparently it annoyed him so much that he removed it as a video responce, lol

  • youtube is not the cause of piracy. it just assists it.

  • Copy that floppy!

  • I will happily buy software if it's cheap enough. I bought Windows 7 for £35 on a student program. That's a fair price. I cannot understand why companies like adobe charge thousands for their software, hardly any teenager or college student can afford that, only big companies can

  • piracy is relitive to WHO you are stealing from, mostly you find that artists who release there own product suffer less from piracy than sony etc. purely based on the fact that theres a media machine that does things like has a mark up on the cost of blank CD;s to help cover the cost of piracy. and the term taking money out of the hands of... do you really think Office would be popular if it couldnt be pirated. People cant afford it. So its relative, not right, but still relative

  • All I can say ... How can I get the software that I need if it isnt even availible in my country ... How can I buy a 2000$ program if my monthyl pay is 800$ ... It isnt all black and white in this world.

  • @zizikelizike save up cockhead

  • @zizikelizike Then don't use it. It's like saying you have to steal a Ferrari because the Toyota you can afford is not to your liking. There are alternatives to many expensive programs. albeit not as polished but it has the basic features.

  • @zizikelizike what program cost 2k$?

  • @stompySharpNpointy 3ds max cost... $3,500.... Unity3d..... $5,000, Unreal Game engine.$5,000 , visual studio up to $1,500 theres quite a few more,

  • @ForNoReason1000 ive googled some of those..your prices are a bit off ..those are developer 3D gaming programs mostly..i can understand why they cost that much if your a game developer then your planning on making money off what your creating with those

  • @stompySharpNpointy Unity 3d is off depending on your license, pro by itself is 1500, with all the other licensees its 5k, probably the same with some of thew others, i didnt know you were talking about specific programs,

  • @stompySharpNpointy Cinema 4D can go as high as $4000...

  • @zizikelizike If you can't pay the 2000$ program, it's probably because you don't need it.

  • I downloaded all MJ's songs because I couldn't listen to them on YouTube.

  • helll youtube ? noo people in the 60s were recording songs from the radio and were selling these ... same thing with movies on vhs ... so youtube has nothing to to with piracy ...

  • why would you buy something that you could get for free, easier, faster

  • if a game is any good, sure, ill buy it BUT 600 $ FOR OFFICE ...HAHA yeah... right... MAC OSX IS LIKE 60 BUCKS XD (in europe)

  • @DrOrtmeyer Lion will cost 29.99$

  • i think piracy is bad but im doing it myself

let say i want a pice of software that i want but i dont have the money for it at the moment i want it

then i will pirate that software but later when i got the money for the software then i wil buy a legal key and register it legaly...

that is (almost) the only pirating im doing...

  • Lowering the costs of products means more people will buy it and thats really what content producers are out for right?

I support piracy until the time that software like Sony Vegas and Adobe CS 5 are stopping to overprice their products!

Only rich people will buy 500$ software bundles..

I think the sales will go up by 80% if they lowered the price to let's say 10$

  • @ZeroC0ol1989 but do you know over how many years adobe have developed there products and how many thousand if not millions of lines whit code and hours of work they have putted in to it ?

and btw the people that have developed this software aint doing it for free...

  • @robojot Gimp is free, those developers don't even get paid.

  • @s5SnipEmo yes gimp and such programs are free but thos programs have not getted developed in that many years and programs like gimp is most of the time based on open surce projects...

  • @robojot What is bad against open source? IMO it is the way to go.

  • @s5SnipEmo im not saying open surce is bad im just saying that adboe have developed their own code and is not using any open surce code...

  • @ZeroC0ol1989 thats actualy true, if office was like 20 bucks i would have bought it by now, so would all my friends...

  • @DrOrtmeyer

It's a bit like releasing a song every year but every year add a little bit of improvements and then sell it for the same price as the last version or even more expensive!

I would totally buy Office if it was 20$

But not some silly tuned down student version.

  • YOU SIR NEED TO GET A F**KING LIFE.....no offence, but you are a lowlife

  • @Shahbaz7371 uhhhh plz explain how he is a lowlife?

  • @Trowter Well basically if you haven't seen already he has over 3000 youtube videos....he uploads about 5-10 vids everyday about B.S, he spends most of his time sitting his ass down on the computer researching B.S, he should be going outside and doing other stuff.

  • @Shahbaz7371 well its his job you know, i think your the lowlife for trolling the internet why not "go out and do other stuff" LOL

  • @Trowter 1. I'm not trolling 2. its 10:30 P.M I would go outside and do other stuff but it's dark so i will go tomorrow. 3. ok soo your saying i'm the lowlife for trolling the internet (which i'm not, i'm just trying to have a discussion, that's not trolling)....ummmmm ok at least I don't upload 5-10 videos everyday talking about B.S.

  • First of all I'm not a thief.

The digital world and real life are 2 complete different things.

I don't go out stealing cars from somebody just because I can't afford it.

Piracy has came from companies over pricing their products.

Now I know there must be allot of work into the affords of making something.

I just think all software and other content needs to go down in price.

So that anyone can afford it, little bit like in the App Store.

I always wait until an app becomes $0,99

  • Everything is free if you know where to download.

  • Youtube has facilitated 'piracy' imo.

  • I will always pirate video games until publishers start following "The Gamers' Bill Of Rights". Punkbuster is practically a legal virus and SecuRom is annoying as shit. You can read them here: gamersbillofrights org

  • I don't see the problem with putting other peoples videos on youtube, provided you haven't changed it in some way. Movies and TV shows ok you are potentially costing someone money, thats different. But music videos is different, since when is watching a video thats already free pirating? Its not like someone else uploading a music video has cost the artist money, if anything its helped spread the word of that artist.

  • yeah there is a lot of people making youtube channels for doing fan videos and I know for a fact they are illegally downloading the shows and movies that they keep doing fan videos 2. some of them even get their channel deleted and they get upset and say youtube is stupid I tried telling some of them that youtube is doing its job but they will keep doing it no matter what so they create another channel. I think it is stupid and they should get deleted like xwprisonlovemx needs to be deleted.

  • 2:45-2:57 that's what I say with Sony and my PS3.

  • Chris, this isn't a total piracy, because Youtube web platform is based on open-source, even most of Google servers are running OPEN-SOURCE SERVERS (Linux), and Google itself is even open-source company. On youtube you can find a lot of good documentaries (yeah even without TV advertisement). And fighting versus real piracy is like fighting versus unbreakable walls. Piracy will always exists since shareware principles are presenting on this planet. Get something what is made of GPL/open-source

  • Ha Ha Napster, the days when students would use the time they had allocated by their parents online downloading ONE song through a 56k modem (Mostly 33.6 or 28k) such sweet memories.

  • If you were not going to buy it in the first place ever and just had a mild interest and used it like a demo is that still piracy no one looses any money and sometimes those things I treat as demos turns into a purchase. Its not hard to find videos that tell you how or where to go to pirate and this yes youtube does cause piracy in that type of usage some condone

  • Pause the vid at 0:22 classic... Chris you say you said no to napster free music, come on, I bet you were the one downloading it :) It's nice to sit here and type on my copied Windows listening to copied music and downloading copied films...Life's great :)

  • Almost everything I have pirated, I have payed for in the past. For example, Sim City 3000, I bought multiple copies of that in the past, and recently pirated it. So, is that really stealing? Maybe technically, but not really.

  • Piracy its how the movie industry got its start! ; )

  • Would you be upset if someone will steal your idea of you, i mean - copy your "show". We have one who tries to be like you in Poland ;)

  • megavideo is the movie pirating monster!

  • Asking if YouTube is causing piracy is like asking if the Glock 37 pistol is causing gun crimes. While it IS a factor in the problem, it's not the only source of trouble. Discontinue the Glock 37, people will just use a different gun. Same here: if YouTube shuts down, people will simply get their illicit content on another site. Piracy is an issue with ANY media and must be taken into account for any media producer.

  • Also you'd better put protection on your media then, make better encription on your DVDs and on your games

  • It contibutes to piracy as you can dowload videos, but torrents probably contribute more as you can download full games ect.

  • I remember in the beggining of the 90's when me and my friends started copying rented VHS films with another VHS recorder beside it.

  • totally agree Chris :) nice statement !!!

  • i think its ok to pirate windows products, because they make so much money anyway.

  • Do you think youtube is causing privacy?

  • Am I stealing media if I buy a used DVD?

  • @jonahirt1 Nothing wrong with being a pirate.

  • I'm addicted to piracy just to have stuff I'll never use :(

  • people need cheap video rentals. They are too pricey at the moment. Also, there should be a way to legally torrent movies, cause its so much faster, and I think the pirate community likes the torrent process

  • You are definitively correct in saying that YouTube is not the cause of piracy. Whenever users can submit their own content - piracy will exist. Would you blame a file hosting website for "causing" piracy? How about Google?

As you've mentioned in the video, they make it very easy to pirate - but this is the same for pretty much every option of uploading user content to the web.

  • Anybody out in this technical group have any iseas why my YT videos don't 'play' anymore?

The audio is just fine, but the video parts just'jump' from one still shot to another. the video portion has no smooth continuity any more.

For the last few days, YT is not like watching TV, it's like watching snapshots in a photo album, with an audio background. Actually, typing words has also slowed down too.

  • I think the real philosophical question should be: Is piracy a problem. Is piracy immoral. Are copyright laws just?

Not going to bother trying to answer these questions, but I think posing them is healthy.

  • Just a Question: Do you pay the authors of the music you play at your Live-Feed ?

  • So you feel bad stealing music but not Microsoft word. Hypocrisy!!!

  • Interesting....... LOL!!! @ 0:29 "share it with the world and not cost you anything" In Other Countries with Internet Data Caps you have to pay for the Data to be Uploaded to Youtube ROFL!!!

  • At The End Chris Did The Salute For "The Wave"

  • LOL 2:30 on a bit is funny shit.

  • but the question is why would the pirate create something when its easier to pirate it ha in your face hahahahaha

  • if some people cant afford the content to begin with (which is the root of most piracy) then you can not really count them in for actually buying the software if there was no pirated version because they would have no money to pay for it anyways. so robbing millions is a bit out of hand. maybe thousands (depending on the product... ex, any expansive rendering product made by big name company's) anyways nice video Chris.

  • Interesting video and I agree with you completely. I'd love to hear your opinions on the YouTube partner program (being one yourself) and YouTube as a source of income. I've heard a lot of people say that YouTube is too cluttered with vloggers and partners which makes it too hard for unknown people or less important videos to rise to the top. Do you think YouTube and it's users have "sold out?" More specifically: do you think YouTube has become monopolized by the Partner Program?

  • @ProjectNReSource Yes it is..........

  • Chris, music Piracy has existed since before the internet was common. Many, many people have recorded purchased media onto a blank cassette tape. I would be hugely surprised if you haven't done that yourself at one point in your life. Once you made a copy of that purchased media onto a blank cassette tape you were effectively pirating the media. Sure, the internet has made the whole process easier and stupidly faster, but piracy has always been there. (not saying it's right)

  • Another word for piracy is plagarisim

  • Comment removed

  • @HAMWI253-Idisagree, piracy is only stealing/selfish, plagarism is deceptive AND selfish/stealing.(plagarism is deceptive because it is the act of claiming that a property was created by your own.)

    ----

basically the situation with piracy is that people are unlawfully viewing content that they had not previously gained the right-to-view. My point is that we have to ask our selves what it means to steal property. Does it mean to leave the victim with less capital than before? or damn char limit..

  • YouTube itself is not causing piracy, but what really is causing it is the YouTube downloaders which actually let you download YouTube videos before they get removed.

  • I was distracted the whole time by the screensaver

  • It's not stealing no matter what. If I couldn't pirate I would just not consume the content. If you go to the super market and copy a bag of chips you have not stolen the bag of chips. there is no cost to the record company and there's no opportunity cost either because I would just not use their products if I had to buy. The products I would buy if I had no choice i ACTUALLY BUY!
