1 bar on a stock engine IS insane. Gain 35-40 hp at great risk.
Check out the videos I posted.
My 930:
3.4L, 7.5:1, SC heads, 964 cams, Aase springs & Ti retainers, ARP bolts, MSD CD ignition w/Magnecor wires. B&B stainless headers, K27 high flow ZC by Kevin, Ruf intercooler. No air injection, cold start or plastic CIS manifold. 3 oil coolers. WUR & RPM activated solenoid by Brian Leask, fuel head by Imagine Auto. Zork.
Another question Mark, if you don't mind. If I do the 1 bar on it, I have 120k on an original engine, will it put more stress on the rings and seals? I think I know the answer. Right now compression is perfect on all cylinders, I'm trying to put off a re-build as long as possible hehe.
What exactly you put stress on, I'm not sure, but it seems if you get more HP out, there has to be higher stresses somewhere. How detrimental are the stresses is the question. Although, I've heard, 1.0 bar is safe. BUT, you need to be concerned with your fuel to air ratio. Too lean is very bad. Can burn hole in piston. Do research, you be the judge. Euro car is safer (potentially more fuel). It is up to you, not me.
I have an '88 930, curious what the read-out was? Is is factory stock? no springs? Mine is. Mine seems pretty fast, but I have a horrible feeling that one of these friggin Subaru's could beat me. Doesn't matter too much to me. In the end, I have a beautiful, very fast Porsche, He has a subaru. End of argument hehe. I love my car!!
It was 272 hp at the wheels with a 1 bar spring, in the 250's with the stock spring. It has a Zucz air box. Otherwise completely stock. It is a Euro version.

Beautiful 930!! Mine is black with tan interior. Had her about 6 months now. I've had a 25 year love affair with her though!!

Did you have to adjust the Bosch system? I think we have the same. And you are right about the lean mixture. It's death to pistons
