  • this is a beautiful movie ♥

  • loved rita hayworth but its ashame her voice for..:long ago and far away:..was dubbed by martha meers

  • Perfection!

  • Internet is just fantastic! I was listening to this song sung by Chet Baker, and telling my companion that it is from a very famous filmed that I loved and watched over & over again on Channel 9's Million Dollar Movie, when I was a kid, but that I just couldn't remember the name of the film. 5 minutes later it has been googled & the film title, 'Cover Girl, ' comes up with this YouTube excerpt from the film.

    Miracle!

  • I'm sorry, but... I love Rita Hayworth, in my mind she was one of a very few women who have class. BUT this dress looks like a huge meringue. I did't see this movie; maybe this particular dress has an explanation in this movie. Anyway, they were, and will be most adorable couple in mainstream's cinematography.

  • @Kela89 There is, believe it or not, an explanation of the dress: Phil Silvers (playing the piano) sees Rita come in first and actually says, of her cover-girl success: "Stores sending over pretty dresses to you (to model) for free...ho-hum!!" Rita does a little twirl in the dress and curtsies a thank-you, but is still unseen by Gene as he fixes some of the chandelier lights. It's a cute scene, but I wish they danced more than they did.

  • i love this song, thank you for posting this. gene kelly rocks!

  • Gene Kelly was a fabulous man not only in the movies, but in real life...look at the temptations he faced with the beautiful women he performed with...but you never heard anything unsavory about him. He was always loving and loyal to his wife and family. I love him!

  • @cootercat486 I agree with you about Gene, he did really love his family and he was heart broken when his 2nd wife died. But the paparazzi was different in those times and numerous stars had multiple affairs but no one knew because no one said anything. People knew how to keep their mouth shut back then.

  • @marilynmortician I guess you are right.....I just hope Gene wasn't one of them.

  • @cootercat486 From all I've read, he had his wild days when he was still on Broadway, pre-MGM. He was already dating his first wife, but she was so much younger than him, still a teenager, and I guess he wanted to wait til they were married, so he 'dined out' instead... He seems to have been a devoted family man - turning down plum roles because they meant he'd be away from his 2nd wife when she was ill for instance.

  • @marilynmortician I agree. Decades ago, Loretta Young gave birth to a baby girl which was fathered by Clark Gable. Few people knew about it. Young disappeared to Europe for a few months before giving birth and that was it. Today, ruining careers is a cottage industry,.. what a shamel

  • @mattjackleroy I had heard about Loretta Young. Marion Davies also had a child fathered by William Randolph Hearst and it wasnt known until after their death. I totally agree with you about ruining careers. Whatever they chose to do or not do is their business. I wish things were the similar now.

  • One of my all time favorites!!! ;)

  • when i was a little girl my mum looked like rita and i wanted to grow up and marry a man like gene but alas they dont make them like him anymore the true romantics beutiful xx

  • A 1954 movie...... one of my most favorited songs......."and now the dream is here beside me........you're here at last..".

  • I love the theme song of this great 1944 oldie movie.......beautiful lyrics......."now the dream is here beside me........you're here at last...........".

  • For all you Rita lovers check out, if you haven't, "I'm Old Fashioned" with Rita and Fred Astaire--indescribably luscious.

  • @ziegfeldman I agree about I'm Old fashioned100%! Beautiful song, even more beautiful Rita, and dancing you'll never see on film again.

  • Too beautiful!

  • TheRealTommyJoeThanks for posting this Marilyn. I saw the movie when I was 14(1960). Even though I own the DVD, I won't have to search to find my favorite scene.

  • SeeYouOnRt66 @cinci.rr.comThis is my favorite Kerns- Gershin collaboration. And my favorite Gene Kelly movie........ yes.... even more so than Singing in the Rain. I have learned something interesting about watching old movies........................and that is.....that I am in love with a lot of deceased women. Wasn't Rita Hayworth just beautiful here. I may be wrong but I think Martha Mears dubbed for Rita here. But I don't care.......I still watch and love her as much as ever.

  • @TheRealTommyJoe This is my favorite Gene Kelly movie too. Everyone assumes singing in the rain but I love this one! And I agree with you about being in love with deceased movie stars! How funny!

  • @TheRealTommyJoe

That was the era of beautiful women! Who can resist them- Rita was gorgeous! And it is even better that they are in Heaven, our thoughts sweetened by nostalgia and the sheer impossibility of it all.

  • I think this is one of Gene Kelly's best roles.

  • Rita's lead-in dialogue is what makes this entire number worthwhile: "Seven months, three days, four hours, twenty-three minutes...it was Tuesday." If that isn't love, what is??

  • I love this movie and especially this scene. It's like a lullaby for me. There's such a calm, endearing atmosphere to it. I love to watch this movie at night, to forget about the stresses of the day. Really, any Gene movie will do that for me, but this one, this song, is extra special.

  • oh how beatiful and romantic is this, it seemed like a time when there was such grace, romance. love the song the actors everything about it. it was a great movie. i guess its seems like a time when people actually knew what love was. what a truly romantic song!

  • I wish you posted this by its title. "Long Ago and Far Away" so it would turn up on searches. MY FAVE MUSICAL. Love love love it, seen it dozens of times, over the last 50 years. Seriously.

SO GLAD YOU POSTED THIS. Sharing with Facebook pals, cos showing on TCM during "31 Days of Oscar," Feb 10, 2010.

  • Whenever I post anything of Gene Kelly's with a title, Youtube finds it and takes it down.

  • This is my all-time favorite song by my favorite actor and actress. I don't think the musical got the greatest reviews, but every time I watch it I find it still enjoyable, especially this scene.

  • This is most likely Nan Wynn singing for Hayworth as she did in some of her other musical roles.

  • She reminds me of an extremely refined Lucille Ball (I love Lucille too but it just struck me here), and he reminds me of a dapper Ewan McGreggor.

I wish all movies were still like this.

  • Now THIS is sexy! I adore both Gene Kelly and Rita Hayworth, may they both RIP. Thanks for posting!

  • Love this song! Rita is so beautiful here!!!

  • Chills run up and down my spine when I watch Gene! Irresistible man.

  • This brings back wonderful memories -

Rita and Gene - SUPERB ............

  • Lovely Rita. So gorgeous and such an incredible graceful dancer. My favorite star from the golden age of cinema. This film brought musicals back to life in Hollywood.

  • One of the most beautiful songs ever written

  • shes goorgeous

  • Thank you for posting this clip. I love anything with Gene Kelly!
