  • Gearmanass, why do all your recordings sound so shitty? Use a decent mike, dude!

  • BTW- I have seen Gearmandude in person and he is not Jack Black. He is actually "Blaster" from 'MadMax: Beyond Thunderdome". He does all of these vids while wearing a helmet and carrying a midget on his back so please people, stop thinking he is Jack Black. He's built like a brick shit house.

  • I have an older Rat original model early 90's?? I guess. It seems to give a lot of nice bassy lows, almost fuzztone-ish if you tweek the filter knob.It cuts out a lot of those chain saw highs but it also works differently with each amp I've used.Never tried in on a tube Fender yet so thanks.

  • why are you usin those pedals with a fender amp? marshall, anyone!

  • ive been playin the jack black dRINkiinG GAMe 4 ten MIns and im shiTTTTFFacccedDDDD

  • The standard RAT is the best. By far.

  • Damn, I really want the You Dirty Rat now! It's the best sounding Rat pedal I've heard by a mile.

  • THIS GUY REALLY SOUNDS LIKE JACK BLACK

  • @7211MChristopher How are we sure it's not him. That's hilarious.

  • he really does sound like him

  • You could go Round and Round about this all day but when you Lay it Down on these pedals they are all Way Cool Jr!

  • Nothing better than "Ratt" to present a review about rat pedals!

  • i can't decide between turbo rat and dirty rat. the former sounds good for solo and the latter for rhythms er whatever. i don't have money to buy lol

  • @xarthurz Go to BYOC and build the mouse you get 6 rats in one:)

  • Rat,Blues Driver and Son of hyde... which two should I get?

  • @iannyrockwell

i have a turbo rat and a dirty rat and a jekyll and hyde, the JandH is the most versatile, save up for that if you can, its the best pedal i own

  • @danielgoux89 Thanks for the advice! I guess the Rat is much more for 80's right?

  • @iannyrockwell get a visual sound jekyll and hyde. its like a f'n dirtbox swiss army knife

  • brown pink rabbit

  • THE FUCKING JACK BLACK SHIT HAS BEEN SAID AND KILLED...PUT A FORK IN IT AND END THIS SHIT......FUCK NO ONE TAKES THE TIME TO STATE THAT GEARMANDUDE DOES BY FAR THE BEST PEDAL REVIEWS AND I (LIKE MANY OTHERS) BASE MY GEAR PURCHASE ON HIS REVIEWS...SO YOU FUCKING SHIT BAGS THAT KEEP UP WITH THE JACK BLACK SHIT EXPECT YOUR PC TO GET THE "BLUE SCREEN"...YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED....

  • HUMBUGGERS

  • He's the bessssst

  • do you ever use a rat for your live gigs or is it ever on ur pedal board

  • @jaynormal

    JACK BLACK!!!!

    Cheers baby...

  • @kwijboymtl GO SUCK COUSINS COCK AND LEAVE THIS GEAR REVIEW....YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED...

  • It's like having too choose between 3 blondes....there's justa slight diference in the hi-lights. Oh well, just as long as the cuffs match the collar.

  • And the Turbo wins by a hair!

  • Omg it's jack white.

  • @coolsprus101 holy shit no one has stated that! dood your a fucking genius....go fucking stuff your mouth with someones pubic hair and STFU!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • TurboRAT all the way! Sounds way more organic. Inspiringly so. :)

  • rat 2 wins no doubt

  • I'm sold on the first RAT.

  • In fact I'm thinking of the dirtyness when started looking for a rat. Hey Gearmanndude, thinking of reviewing mxr custom badass 78 distortion?

  • @mrmusica he allready did it!!

  • i have an old rat pedal is it the same

  • Regular Rat Wins!!!

  • But isn't rat a distorion pedal not an overdrive?

  • @knikk77 oh Yeah ! the RAT is most definitely a DISTORTION pedal ! what it does best is really totally in the distortion zone.

  • you are jack black

  • That's not Jack. Jack only uses an Ibenez TS808HW.

  • I think GEARMANDUDE should start micing the amp for a better quality sound demo, without any external ambient interference/reverb & sound loss I think it's not impossible to do...

All the demos now are good, but with mic.would be AWESOME

  • I agree with GMD. I preferred You Dirty Rat.

  • Hey, you sound just like... Sarah Palin! Incredible vocal likeness... Gee, Sarah - I didn't know you were SO into Rockin' & Rollin'!? Go girl...

  • Your voice sounds like Jack Black

  • jack black

  • i like the original way more....thought the Dirty rat would have it all covered.

  • I gotta admit, I was expecting the Turbo to take it. I like the original the best.

  • i think this was the distortion that kurt cobain used if im correct.

  • @ganjaking187 He ues DS-1 and DS-2

  • @henryexe He did apparently use Rat's once in a blue moon, but Dave Grohl and Johnny Greenwood are the biggest Rat users I know of.

  • @jdawg1692 Dave Grohl is the reason I bought a Turbo Rat, but no matter how much I switched my rig around in the last 10 years, I can't get that really great growling sound that Dave gets.

  • @rpcelectronics Yea I wish I could get that Grohl tone too, the closest I can get without an actual Rat is a Boss OS-2 sequenced before a Boss DS-1 (I won't go into settings), it's not exact but it's growly as shit.

  • its jack black!!!

  • it sounds as if the turbo is more like a fooz

  • Is there a difference between the RAT and the RAT 2?

  • all Rats are good Rats

  • "you dirty rat is very muffled, rat turbo is more "gainy" whereas the rat is just thick and heavy

  • Was that Jack Black in the video? Sounds just like him.

  • @b1rdkeeper, oh wait nevermind. I just scrolled through the comments. He does sound just like him though..

  • Comment removed

  • You Dirty Rat sounds like shit. The Turbo comes very close, but the original is the best, imo.

  • HELLYEAH GEARMANNDUDE ROCKS

    thanks for this video

    helps me alot.......again

i'm going for the Rat original!!

  • excellent demo... thank you gearman

  • whiteface!!!

  • I'd love some better quality sound on this :P

  • Lets start a drinking game watch 5 of GMD's Demo videos and a tally up every comment that mentions jack black. Drink for every one of 'em.

  • @jaynormal jack black

  • @jaynormal i think everyone would die from alcohol poisoning from the first video. even if they drank water

  • @jaynormal do you know how many people would die of liver disorder

  • You still alive? Did you die of alcohol poisoning?

  • @jaynormal yay for alcohol poisoning!

  • Could you do little bigg muff vs rat

  • this guy does great demos but i cant fkn stand his boots, his gay white coily cable, his bluesy amps and his southern accent.LOLL remember when this guy did the whammy pedal?? hahaha priceless

  • Dude, you sound exactly like that guy from Year One...

    Michael Cera?

  • @TedEdFred21 uhhhhhhh.....Jack Black...

  • @schpudd but i think that's not a difference cause you can increase gain many other ways.

  • The Jack Black jokes are well boring now!!!!!!!

  • @ed2000888 jack black

  • @ed2000888 Yeah I'm really fed-up of all the Jack Black crap especially when we all know its not Jack Black so why keep it going?

  • @whangie1...... Yeah its like oh this guy sounds like Jack Black dude!.... Like its some kind of fucking revelation that they have to share it with everyone? There all Cunts!

  • dude you sound like Christian Slater

  • Did Ratt use the Rat?

  • lol humboogers

  • You should make one for the little big muff vs the rat distortion.

  • TurboRAT!! we have a winner!!!

  • The dirty rat seems to have a harmonic overtone, best one IMHO is the turbo rat. That sound has some balls!

  • you dirty rat wins for me...it seems to have a less fuzzier sound than the other two...more like an OD than a dist/fuzz

  • I just got a "You dirty rat" and using it with a blues junior and a fender strat and it sings :D the thing is with the filter you can play blues and rock and also crank it up and crank the distortion and then get a really beefy punky noise :D awesome pedals :D

  • I just got the "you dirty rat" with a fender strat and a blues junior and it sings :D

  • That Turbo Rat sounds badass

  • he needs new snake skin boots those are fallin apart

  • @DDzSlaytanic

i played a 80's rat, and it was way better than any of these or most other rat pedals i have ever heard i dont know why though

  • what will happen if you turn all of them at once? :P

  • @St9ler a black hole will open up and life as we know it would end

  • @Soniclife91 thats so nice. im ordering them right now!

  • Hi Again Man of the Super Gear !!!

Thank you very much for this Demo, I like it A lot!!!

    I have a question for ya :D

are this RATS Made in USA or made in CHina?

Im asquing this question cause I Want to buy THE BEST RAT and i have heard about this RAT units that those ones made in USA are the best ones, but they move the RAT factory to china and i have heard that those RATs have very bad quality components and dont even sound like they should

could you please givme an advice?

  • The wording of the "Person" speaking is JACK BLACK YEOOOWW :D.

  • Jack Black!!!

  • Dude this HAS to be jack black!!!

  • ee gad, where does he get all those toys?

  • @TheDevillaysGuitar7 no its not its eric whorton

  • are these all vintage or reissues?

  • The original Rat is best. Tried tested and true.

  • I you have high output pick ups DON'T BUY A RAT 2!!!! Get the Turbo Rat or something else. With high output pups the Rat 2 will make this weird sound every time you play a note. It kinda hick ups. Like every time you play say an open E there's a sight delay. The note kinda fades in really fast...

  • @Gibson735150 I have really high output humbuckers, and I don't have any problems. On the contrary, the sustain is very good.

  • @Torfinnmadssen Really? What pickups do you have? I've got Super Distortion's. If I play at a high volume volume and the Dist knob is past 12 o'clock it chokes. Please answer and tell me does this happen to you too. Cause I really like the tone and I don't wanna sell it and then find out that I was just doing something wrong...

  • @Gibson735150 Well, first off, I hardly ever put it past 12 o'clock when using humbuckers, because I don't need/want that much distortion. But, if it only happens at high volumes, could it be your amp choking up?

  • @Gibson735150

My Rat2 does this too. I do use it for really high gain stuff with the dist knob most of the way up. It's def. the pedal, and not the amp. It only seems to choke when I hit a low E really hard, and only occasionally shows up under other circumstances. For my purposes, I really kind of like it. It doesn't get in the way most of the time and when I want it, I can get that Neil Young exploding-amp kind of sound.

  • Yo Gearmandude! How many pedals do you own? Or are you just REALLY into the Rat pedals?

  • just because its older doesnt mean its good and nice boots

  • I got a Rat in '87 (traded a bag of *ahem* herbal supplements for it, a gold coily cable and a strap) only problem, I play bass. I love it dearly but I STILL cant do much of anything practical with it in a live setting, lord knows I try. Hell, its on my pedal board as I type this. Oh yea...VERY helpful demos sir gearmanndude. You've helped me spend more money on eBay. Too bad eBay dont trade, I cant grow money.

  • I can get a pretty good jimmy page type sound with mine

  • I read James Hetfield once used a Rat distortion pedal. I want one because I think it's a great sounding pedal.

  • it's a rat race! Love it!

  • there all crap, just by a marshall or a boogie,

  • @evelskunny yes because marshalls and mesa boogies cost 100 dollars :))

  • does Courtney love use a rat pedal?

  • naaaa she doesnt need one cos she IS a rat lol

  • he sounds like jack black

  • Ive got an original Rat from the 80s, no L.E.D and all that crap. Just pure ´Rockin´ tone.

  • hey men I'm getting into this thing with analog pedals... and just wanted to let you know that ALL of your videos are helping me a lot... thanks for posting them!! keep it up gearmanndude!!

  • With boots like that I bet he smokes marlboro, wheres a stetson and drives a rusty pick up truck round the south demoing his rat pack on any poor music shop he can find..lol

  • humboogers.

  • @zaktan415 humburgers xD

  • It must be so annoying, but i mean, you even use the same tone of voice as jb!

  • This is my kind of pedal!

  • Turbo Rat wins. Your boots come in a close second.

  • come on... i wanna hear "the metal"!!!!!! :D

  • rofl how did I know that ratt would be playing in one of these videos hahah :P

  • turbo is good too ...heck i like em '' all

  • Can it be some good blues stuff also from the Rats?

  • ever see gearmanndude and jack black in the same room?

    i didn't think so

  • mine sucked ass nuggets i sold it (1987 version ..i love the dirty rat awsesome

  • There is nothing better than The Rat.

  • wow these sound horrible

  • @metalburger2 Isn't it awesome?! :D

  • the standard rat 2 is always with me, when playing with numerious bands such as a postrock band with lots of delay to achieve a wall-of-sound, a sludgemetal band, a noise/shoegaze band and a lightning bolt like project when i'm playing a bass using a rat, an oc-2 and bassballs.

proco rat is my roommate! lol

  • i've played 90's britrock/britpop music, can somebody help me which rat distortion that is appropriate for music?,thanks before

  • @Mailyis18 Bernard Butler from Suede used a couple of Turbo Rats- hope this helps!

  • @Mailyis18 The only way to figure that out man is to play them yourself, All the pedals are sick, you have to decide which is your favorite, Guitar Gear is entirely subjective, I play Thrash metal on a Gibson Les Paul through a Bugera 1990 which is a Marshall Jcm 900 rip off and it sounds crunchier and nastier than my buddies Mesa Triple Rectifier with EMG's, it all depends on how YOU play guitar, what your set-up is and what guitar best brings out the nuances of your playing.

  • @noremac91 Thrash Metal! \m/ The Best Metal! NO??

  • @Privat3Kag3 AGREED! I'm so sick of breakdown after breakdown with all these new metalcore and every other subgenre of metalcore bands, it just gets super old cuz they all sound the same. Thrash is coming back, and it's gonna be big!

  • @noremac91 Core music in general blows massive dick. Thrash til' Death! \m/ \m/

  • The MXR gt-od or the ProCo RAT or The ProCo Turbo RAT?

  • They all sound really good. Question is, which one sounds best in front of my amp??

  • excuse me Jack what is the best ?

  • whats up jack black ha

  • according to ProCo's website, the You Dirty RAT actually has germanium clipping diodes, so it has abit more 'old school' tone... I dig it the most of the three versions presented here.

  • if im not mistaken, i think the rat distortion, 1st one, is the one pedal that james hetfield used on the album kill em all.

  • RAT - sounds trebbier and slightly more nasally, very Rat-like

TURBO RAT - warmest sounding but still very Rat-like, bass has a nice thump to it

YOU DIRTY RAT - sounds like a smooth Rat

***like always, it depends on what other gear you're using, how all of your gear complements/works against each other, what sound you're looking for, how it feels, and what you're willing to pay.***

  • I think I agree with you. I like the dirty rat more. More organic. Has a bit of fuzz in there, that's why! But I also like the rat 2. Could be slightly more versatile. Awsome pedals for their cost!! Awsome abuse-including-guarantee!

  • Jack Black's doing gear reviews?

  • @idlerock Yep. And they're the best ones on the web!

  • this is the pedal james hetfield uses

  • @derekbells Yeh, during the early 80s

  • yeahhh,ratt !!" you`re in looove!"

the first rat sounds more open...

  • @BaaMooSki Yep, because Jack Black sure does love the crazy animal leather xD

  • @BaaMooSki someone says that in every video lol

  • @BaaMooSki I think it's Mator the towTruck

  • @BaaMooSki its actually some guy that works at a guitar store in Nashville Tennessee my friend has met him!

  • That would be "You're In Love" by RATT

  • does anyone know which is the opening song?

  • if someday I buy a rat for me, i'll add one extra T at the name.

    :D

  • it's totally an "apples vs. oranges" comparison... i thought the turbo rat peaked a little more in the mid-range frequencies, which i always find is a plus in a distortion pedal like this... you should consider demoing these(the Rat & Turbo)along side the new '85 Rat reissues... i think the original Rats smoke the newer ones. something about the definition & clarity of the old ones!!! ALSO, the RATT intro WAS funny as hell... loved it.

  • Lol love the Ratt songs!

  • you dirty rat all the way

  • the RAT all day!

  • TURBOOOO. This attack is so exciting \o/

  • Turbo Rat

  • whats up jackblack

  • LM308 chip...not 305...my bad.

  • Another good review Jack. I sent my RAT that I bought several years ago...with the LM305 already in it...to Keeley to mod. Wow...besides the great component upgrades...the new 3 way switch gives you all of the different RAT sounds here and more. And I think it sounds way better than any of the individual RAT's shown by Jack.. Just my opinion. Thanks again Jack for buying all this stuff just to show us 'whats what'....ha.

  • I love ratt..and rats. Too bad Ratt never had very good lyrics..but their music always kicked ass and warren is one of fave guitarists.

  • Turbo Rat

  • turbo rat
