Im a big Ali fan but for the life of me cant understand why late in his career to use his ability to take punches as an asset. The rope a dope worked with Foreman but in other fights he just took needless punches, this fight he left it behind and actually trained properly. Being in the boxing game he must of met countless punch drunk old fighters, did he think he would be immune from this.
Ali realized he could get into shape for this match and take this man, who was really a 2nd-rate heavyweight. That he did, on his toes and dancing through most of it. His ability to block and slip punches was the best we had seen in over two years. Spink's scoring was quite low for a 15 rounder. Cosell called it well and the judges scored it pretty well. Personally I don't have Spinks winning one round. I have 10-0-5 Ali, with Ali winning 1-3,5,8-13, and 4,6,7,14 and 15 were a draw.
@bareavis Perhaps because Pacheco left Ali's corner after the Shavers fight. He no longer wanted Ali to take punishment in the ring especially after the Shavers fight in which Ali took some punishing shots. He noticed Ali was becoming ill, had no business in the ring anymore, Ali was aging and was no longer the Ali of old. Pacheco being the doctor he knew what was coming. So maybe Pacheco was saying that Ali shouldn't have been fighting at all even though this was a star performance.
non-sense. ali was way faster than tyson ever dreamed and he not only withstood but completely outsmarted and pulverized boxers who hit harder than even tyson.
@brainboob noi fighter even hit as hard as tyson man and with what speed dude. he got the fastest knock outs, I like ali more but he would corner him eventualy and he would lay him down in few combinations. ali in his prime was realy skinny. mike would kill him!
You sound like you have no clue who muhammad ali was. You couldn't just 'corner' him, he was elusive, faster than the tasmanian devil, before you knew it HE was on top of YOU beating the shit out of you and then he would disappear again like lightning. George foreman was stronger than tyson in his prime and got knocked out by ali in his prime. Ali was 32 at the time. Tyson was defeated by a nobody named douglas at 23 and easily by holyfield at 30.
Oh and might I add that foreman went the distance with a prime holyfield? The same foreman that was knocked out by a 32 year old ali? No, a much older, fatter and SLOWER foreman. Went the distance with a prime holyfield. An over the hill holyfield defeated a tyson who was still pretty young, for a boxer.
@smallpotatoes989 Muhammad Ali is a very smart figher-If Ali had fought Tyson while they were both in thier prime-i believe that Ali would have danced and threw jabs and not let Tyson get close enough to do any damage-Ali would have won-he would beat Tyson just like he beat the big Bear Sonny LIston
@LelandnSonya4eva ...YOU ,must be very young. That " COMMENTATOR " is the Great HOWARD COSELL, the Voice of Boxing,50's to the 80's,ALI's 'other half'.Howard was tele-casting a fight that was a FIX,It was obvious to ALL who saw it.Howard said,"I will NEVER telecast a fight again, this was not even close,it's shameful what has become of this sport. And HE NEVER DID.
@forexistentialistics Get the fuck out of here hater. They both lasted Alot of Rounds & They both came out Winners in my opinion. Maybe if you actually knew a little about boxing you would love this fight.......
Ali was able to turn back the clock to the Foreman years in this fight. The young fighter went into the fight leaning on Ali and trying to wear the much older fighter out. Yet in the end it was the young guy that was tired.
This is what I'll always remember as Ali's last fight.
Ali is by far the most exciting figure boxing has ever seen. just give it up! the people who disagree say its because there were a lot more technical fighters yet those same people call a pure technical genius like mayweather boring...i dnt get it
Just finished reading Hunter S. Thompson's 'The Great Shark Hunt'..and the past couple entries involve a ton of interviews Hunter has with Muhammad concerning his rematch with Spinks, allot of deep and personal insight, stories about partying with Ali but overall being really skeptical he could pull this off...the book never tells you who wins. Im happy Ali pulled this off.
wow what a fight ,spinks was amazing ,what great stanima against a bigger heavier ali . i think the judges got it wrong there , i think that was spinks fight , even the comentator seemed biased.
I was at this fight in 1978. Ali was in great shape and was able to move fluidly through the entire 15 rounds and evade for the most part Spinks' wild punches. But no way was this Ali at his finest, with combinations and reactions too quick to almost see. He was at his best before his forced 3-1/2 yr retirement for refusing induction into the military, against Cleveland Williams, Zora Foley, Mildenburger, Chuvalo, etc. But his greatness was exemplified in being able to beat an absolute monster
Joe Frazer, never fought Ali's fight! Joe was so blind from cataracs that Ali knew all he had to do was stay in front of him and he'd never see it coming, etc.! That fight was truely fought with Frazers eyes closed except for the few times he got far enough to 1 side to be able to see to hook 1 or 2 in there etc.!
Ali won this one on smarts and what was left of his speed. That he had to train so hard to be able to dance again and out-point a virtual amateur (although certainly Spinks had a punch, and his awkward style -- similar to Ken Norton in ways -- was actually a good match for Ali) indicated that Ali's time was up.
Ali's finest hour and greatest fight ever..he did thee imposible this night. On this night, he would have beaten anybody. Long live the spirit of this great Man.
Ali won this fight hands down. Yes, he was weak, old, and his brain was already experiencing what would eventually become a full fledged Parkinson’s disease—but he still managed to kick Spinks butt. Truly amazing.
@hotwelder2010 You're fucking nuts. You don't beat Liston, Patterson, Chuvalo, Lyle, Quarry, Frazier, Foreman,Norton and be overrated. If he's overrated what are all those fighters?
@bangitslo Some of the fighters you named beat Ali or were screwed out of a decision. Watch the Ken Norton fight. Ali got a gift...... Not dissing Ali but he was no Joe Louis......
@hotwelder2010 I actually agree with you buddy. Ali is overrated (historically). Great fighter but no imortal imo and most real good fighters gave him all he could handle (Fazier, Norton - guys Foreman killed) and many times beat him. He was one of the great fighters of the 70's but not much better than a lot of the great boxers of the decade.
15 sept 1978, Ali were 36 years old and had no chance according to most experts. Spinks were 25 years old and WBA champion. Spinks were stripped of his WBC-belt because he gave Ali this rematch instead of meeting Ken Norton (the nr one contender)
ali fought a better fight this time than he did the first time with spinks. this fight he is moving more and not getting caught by splinks heavey punches. ali is being smart here . if only he used his brain in the first fight, he wouldnt have lost first time.
Historic, but not especially impressive from either man. That having been said, Ali was in his 18th year as a pro and was almost completely shot by this point, both from age and from Parkinson's. That he could summon this kind of fight, against anyone, let alone Spinks, shows again the kind of athlete he was. At his peak, no one could beat him. Not before, nor since.
Like I've said elsewhere, the "Ali Mystique" jaded quite a few people, and refs allowed him to get away with a things no other boxer could have. A LESS jaded ref would have deducted a FEW points from Ali from all the holding he did. And NO, Ali didn't do that "all the time" because guys like Frazier, Norton, Lyle, and Foreman were much bigger than Leon Spinks who might've weighed 200 lbs if he was lucky. I love Ali with all my heart but I know he wasn't perfect, gotta call a spade a spade.
1/2 of the greatest was still an amazing fighter. You can see a dullness in his eyes and flatness in his expression. Yet still the flashes of footwork and bounce in his steps and viciousness of his jabs..
This is what it looks like when a man lives life to the fullest, and leaves absolutely everything he has on the battlefield.
If Ali had never lost his belt to Spinks the first time, this fight would have been against Larry Holmes. He may have still lost to Larry because Larry was fighting at his best but the fight would have been much different than the fight in 1980.
@jamduk35 Actually, if Ali beat Spinks the first time he wouldve had to face Norton for the 4th time. That was the agreement before the 1st Spinks fight. This is why Norton became the WBC Champ after the 1st fight. Spinks refused to fight Norton and was stripped of the WBC title.
Ya he ALWAYS got away with it too = P he has parkinsons from getting hit behind the head and he could've given it to everybody he was yanking behind the neck like that. All I'm sayin = P
Hm...Ali was holding a lot and in the first figjt the ref wouldn't let him get away with it. Spinks slowly loses his belief he even can win once he realizes the ref won't stop Ali from holding behind the neck
@urariotalice u dumb as hell ali was the greatest boxer to ever how could he win all the matches he won by settin it up think before u say some shit with yo stupid ass
