Most (probably not all) people that listen to death and black metal, started with bands like Metallica or Megadeth and worked their way into "heavier" music/vocals. One more thing; a lot of death and black metal songs would loose their atmospheric sound if they used different vocals, i.e. the vocals fit the genre.

This band is the shit. I started out listening to music like Iron Maiden and then got into the heavier stuff like black, death, thrash, and then the more progressive stuff like Enslaved for example. Lately its been a lot of non metal like jazz, fusion, and classical. I always come back to this though. Enslaved has such a unique atmosphere and originality.
