Its still blues. I promise there are plenty of modern things to be depressed about. Not the same as back when so it yields different results, but still blues. Blues and blood.
I hope I won't piss anyone off here, but I think this version sums up everything that's wrong with white people playing blues. It sounds much cooler than Kimbrough's original, but the spirit is gone, the flowing rhythm's been broken, the african beat is missing. In exchange we get a very technical production and funny guitars ringing here and there. I understand most of you know it are OK with it. I won't say it's bad or worse than Kimbrough's, it just doesn't work for me.
@sandwichesize don't get me wrong, I don't mean it literally, it's not a matter of colour, it's a matter of culture of course. There are black musicians who play like whites. Different sensibilities, that's all.
The spirit isn't gone, it's just different. Old Blues recordings have a warmer, more raw sound to them because of the means of recording. This version is much more electric and produced. Doesn't mean it's bad, not to me at least. It's a matter of taste I suppose.
American songwriter said that Dan dropped out of college and his dad made him play gigs to support himself. How about this Dan, I drop out of college now and you let me open for you? aim high
@untimelyrippd I totally agree, plus if you own the CD 'Chulahoma' there is a bonus track with Kimbrough's wife saying how much she enjoyed their version and how they 'stayed true' to the way he played (in not so many words). Great Tune either way!
@megafaded69 I dont believe that they are "Tricking" they are opening up the blues to the youth of today, as you do not hear much of it at all these days.
@StannSSS Ask a 16 year old who Howling Wolf is. I heard about 1000 mixes of Black Keys at EDC. They are using a modern sound over a blues format. About a million bands have now spawned out of the same format with the same types of effects on their instruments. I'd say they brought it back and they did trick a whole lot of kids who would otherwise be listening to Kid Cuti, into grooving to blues.
Anyone who looks at someone's pyhsical appearance and judges them solely upon what they see, is simply ignorant. Stop with all this "hipster" bullshit; they are a figment of your imagination.
You guys must realize that saying "the black keys aren't 'true' blues and real southern blues men wouldn't approve" is like saying "anyone other than blacks can sign rap correctly" which is untrue. Like saying "only white kids can play rock and roll" Etc.
OH and have you ever listened to Chulahoma? the last song is Junior K's f%^&&king wife calling a radio station that plays the blk, and she says they are the only ones who can recreate his style"
I've tried shoving their music down everyone I know throats. N I've successfully recruited two more Black Keys fans. You have to have a 'clue' as to what music is really all about to appreciate TBK. Aiight, perhaps Rippd was a bit on the harsh side. This is a good song, and the Keys are one of the best bands to come out in a while. But I gotta say, I kinda sympathize with his general sentiment; I personally know a grip of skinny white hipster chicks that gush over this song but won't give Junior himself the time of day. Sad really, that such amazing and original music only gets play when it's sanitized by studios and performed by pretty boys.
@CF565 LOL @ pretty boys! What the hell is pretty about them? They dress as casual can get N lets not forget Patrick's Buddy Holly glasses. @sassybeest@southerncal909 Come on people; be realistic. I'm not hating on TBK. For white boys, these cats got mad soul. But lets look at them: White, skinny, designer jeans, clean styled hair, cool glasses, and just to drive this home, SKINNY & WHITE! Seriously, do you think any grimy-ass fat old black man would ever get the mainstream play they're getting? Just being honest about how the music industry, and our society, works. It's called marketability. No hate, just truth.
@CF565 they mowed lawns for a living before their first album check out their earlier videos when they are wearing t shirts and raggidy ass jeans. the black keys are one of the few bands who are mainstream just because they are to good to be ignored
