I think that they big issue in the "Gay Marriage Debate" is that people use inconsistent language, which wastes lots of time and confuses people.

Here in Canada, we have legalized gay unions. This means that anyone can be married by the state. However, the "marriage" aspect is strictly religious in nature; this means that the couple can get married ONLY if the religious representative chooses to bless it. If no leader from their religion is willing to bless it, then it stays a civil union.
