  • I believe the reason there are so many negative and profane comments is because the issue was never dealt with by the body of Christ but swept under the rug. Even now all you will get is the generic: only God can judge. We prize gift above righteousness and all goes unchecked. Gift comes without repentance and it is not hard to talk the talk but the truly redeemed are known by their fruit not gift or musical ability.

  • @frsh6272..You better preach! Amen and AMEN!! I've been saying the same for years and have been met with rejection and negativity. Keep the faith and you'll continue to be blessed.

    Dee

  • @HusbandandWifeShow Thank you, and I will.

  • I've seen most of these comments on here & they are pretty rude & have strong language on here. Yall' need to show respect for the dead & for Rev. James Cleveland. All that I can say is that he's a living legend, whether if he was gay or not. Only God can judge you at the end!

RIP! James Clevland! Long live the King of Gospel!

  • Talking about respect... what's with all this profanity? You ALL turned this video to a devilish mess! It neither respects the god you serve nor does it respect Rev. James Cleveland. Sweep around your own front door before you do it to others...

  • @SEFYH God bless you too you better hope when you get to the gates god say well Done. You Have No Respect For Any Body Do You Respect Your Self ?

  • I found a version of I've got a Telephone online..just google Telephone in my boson by the Caravans (James Cleveland is playing on the piano) Doesn't sound as goodas this version though.

  • @MrBigpopsonswoll Nigga, that was a straight up BITCH MOVE on your part. I think that steroid juice done got to your head!! I wonder are you FEMALE hiding behind your faggot looking profile pick. I can't believe a foreal heterosexual male would leave a fucked up comment like that on someone's channel.

So do you ALWAYS throw stones and hide your hands? I'm not blocking you my "friend." You can leave all the nasty comments you want on my page. I can take it...You obviously CAN'T! Ole PUNK AZZ!

  • @MrBigpopsonswoll You'll teach me some respect, huh? LOL!!! That's funny! Find out what the ENTIRE scripture says, instead of picking out the part that suits your homophobic needs, DUMMY. And you're right I love homo's, bi-sexuals, Lesbians, blacks, whites, asians, hispanics and even your FAGGOT AZZ! We are all God's children!

Oh, and by the way...I love all the big muscular, sweaty, attractive MEN you've subscribed to on YOUR channel! So how's that "DOWN LOW' shit working out for ya! LOL

  • Thank you James for your music an for creating the GMWA. Now rest in peace knowing that God is the only judge that counts.

  • 12 people are going to have some explaining to do on judgement day.

  • O LAWD HAVE MERCY WHAT HAPPENED TO THE SOUND

  • who made the last song

  • whats the name of the last song?

  • The image is shattered for those

    Who are less conservative.

  • i always enjoyed music like this because it does take you back and i still listen to it until this day and im only 31 years old.

  • @Denisha1980 same here i'm 31 and we use to listen to this on sarturdays while cleaning and sunday of course. i only like some gospel these days, mainly the old stuff though.

  • Let's all show some respect..God's judgement is the only judgement that counts. RIP Rev Cleveland

  • @peechykeen100 What was the point of that comment?

  • Comment removed

  • Aladrian got it statred with "He"s All I Need".

  • Aldrian got it statred with "He"s All I Need".

  • Who knows the very last song?

  • since Pres. Obama is so outraged over "faux" homophobia in [the] Black community & Black churches, why does he so ardently seek and assume their electoral support on every opportunity ? Since it outrages him so, perhaps in order to allow him to maintain his character & integrity, the "Black Community" should offer it's anti-war, homophobic support to a more reasonable and balanced candidate come 2012- just a very short time from now ! Is there any other group he snubs more than Blacks ??

  • @bhossast -thanks 4 UR comment- sorry, but I don't agree with you.

  • 2:22-4:28 This is the original and raw presentation of gospel blues, stripped down, bare bones gospel with no pretense as shown by this magnificent vocalist, her presence and command is totally apparent when she sings the first note. Old school gospel singers like her were legends on Savoy-Peacock/Duke-Specialty-Apollo-Chess/Checker; those of you that state she did not have to shout, guess what? She was not singing for you---but for HIM and HIS glory.

  • What is the name of the song that starts around 4:30???

  • @AquSon How can someone just SELL a church? Where was the Trustee Board? God have mercy on her soul and the souls of those who assisted her.

  • Lord So thats Whats Betty Perkinks Looks like!!! Its nice to Finally Match A Face With A name !!

  • I s that Bishop White around 4:09?

  • listening to 2:23 - 4:28 blessed my soul. In 1986 James Cleveland and 4 back up singers came to Oceanside California...... TORE THE AUDITORIUM UP!!! He used us ( the audiance ) for the choir. GOD BLESS HIS SOUL.

  • can u buy this on dvd and the video of his service?

  • what is the name of the LAST song?

  • I was the youngest thing singing in that choir, less than a week into my 20th birthday, and at the time, I hadn't fully digested the greatness God allowed me to sit under. These experiences are worth more than anything that's ever been in my bank account. It's so bittersweet to look at this.

  • @AquSon My GOD father Joey Jones played for him and I did not appreciate it at the time, Now there both gone home.

  • @hollyhoodjai I knew Joey. He was a trip, such a character lol and a fantastic musician. So sad to say goodbye.

  • I LUV IT

  • Who sings the Last song, Im blessed>? I looked under charles May, but that didnt come up ANYWHERE.

  • @MrNICKB13 The group that recorded that song was called the 4th of May. Look it up under that. I have the whole cd that Im Blessed is on. Just a great gospel cd.

  • That's a young Quincy directing on the songs, go ahead man....LOl

  • Is that the late Rev Timothy Wright

  • @jddrew1000 yes

  • This is VERY moving!

  • You betta sang, Mother! Song # 2 I luv it!!! Somewhere around the throne...Yeeeesss!

  • Can someone tell me the name of the very last song.?

  • i was a kid in the 90s but i remember this good music like it was yesterday...and i still listen to it...and how everyone in the church had that simple rock. and waved those hands...this video takes me back

  • This is real gospel music. Nothin' like traditional gospel. Wow! How it takes me back.

  • Me, too. All of the headbanging and yelling and screaming and jumping all over the place is really nerve-wracking. Screaming and yelling and not saying nothing while you're at it doesn't work for me.

  • @sspsllc

Isn't it wonderful how we are all different? I mean what can evoke tears, and feeling intimate with God in one person, can be a real turn off to someone else! But, thank God, there is enough variety to go around!

  • I miss old school gospel

  • So do I.

  • Me too

  • @byronking2369 yes me too!!!!

  • @byronking2369

Like you, I miss old-school gospel and, for that matter, old-school church, where folk just sang, and preachers just preached . . .

  • @byronking2369 DO YOU KNOW THE NAME OF THE SONG AT 7:20

  • What is the name of that last song??

  • Now this is real gospel.

  • no offence to the singer but did she have to scream that much? I love a good shout but that is a little much. Maybe that is the way it is suposed to be sung. I love the big Rev non the less. His music was as great as he was. I feel closer to GOD when I hear him sing. I just wish I could have heard him preach.

  • What a wonderful send-off for Bro. Clevelalnd. The angels in heaven must have clapped their hands for joy!

  • whats the name of the song the woman sings about i went to my old house???

  • "Somewhere Around God's Throne" That's the great Betty Perkins! She recorded that with Rev. James Cleveland and the Southern California Community Choir about 40 years ago.

  • @elsinorejoe Was james Cleveland married or had kids?

  • @nolagemini james had a really young daughter who sung with kirk on his first album

  • @nolagemini he has one biological daughter, I do not know if he was ever married to her mother.

  • Rev. Cleveland always blessed me good:

  • where can i find that song at

  • whats the name of the last song? I really love that song for some reason

  • It's called, "I'm Blessed", written by the late Charles May.

  • we are all blessed to be god's children

  • is this church still around today?

  • Comment removed

  • This is actually Rev. James Cleveland's wake which was held at his church Cornerstone Institutional Baptist Church in Los Angeles, CA. He was the founder and first pastor of Cornerstone.

  • Who was tha number 3, 4, and 5 leaders?

  • What a splendid, spirit filled home going for the King of Gospel music, the late, great Rev. James Cleveland. The second song...OMG. I thought I was going jump out of my skin. Let Him use you Ms. Perkins! SANG! When she finished, "I went to the house where I used to live!", the church loses their Holy Ghost minds. 2:42 LOL! This is pure old school, sweat through your suit, hand waving, shouting and praising Him music. I can feel the power in the church as she sings. Sing with her heart!

  • waht is the name of the second song?

  • "Somewhere Around God's Throne"

  • That song takes me right on in everytime

  • What is the name of the last song? I hear the words I'm Blessed. And who performs or has performed it?

  • What is the name of the 1st song and where can I find it? I think it's a very nice song and I'd like to hear it in it's entirety.

    -Expressions of God's Chosen One

  • Does anybody know where I can find the James Cleveland song "Tomorrow" ? Some of the lyrics goes "is there any hope for love, is there any hope for peace ? what's the world gonna be like, Tomorrow"

  • You can find it on the cd titled "James Cleveland and the Charles Fold Singers: Jesus is the best thing that ever happened to me".

    -Expressions of God's Chosen One

  • I appreciate the info, I'll try and find it..

  • who is the second lady singing she good

  • The second lady is the great Betty Perkins. She died in 1995. See the other comments I've posted about her.

  • Its hard to believe that this same exact building is now a Big Lots Retail Store.....

  • WHAT!!! Are u serious?

  • Yes... Look it up on google maps. Right at the corner of Slauson Ave and Western in Los Angeles, CA... I pass it all the time.

If you find some of the other videos posted by former church and choir members, you can see the outside of it then and see that its exactly the same outside, Everytime i'm in that store I look around and wonder how much work did it take to convert it from a church to a Pic 'N' Save (Which has since change to Big Lots)

  • Wow, I just saw it. That's something!

  • When the store is up for sale I,m gonna convert it back to a church.

  • that is a wonderful idea...

  • @TheFirecogicuk did you convert it back to a church

  • @largestlover The question is has the shop gone up for sale?lol.

  • @TheFirecogicuk It was so heartbreaking, when they gutted the edifice, James spent so much time and money, building. To this day, I still don't know why Annette Thomas did what she did.

  • @AquSon Who is Annette Thomas and what she do?

  • @AquSon I don't this woman personally, but i can only surmise that she did what she did because of GREED!!!

  • i love it

  • Is Betty Perkins still alive?

  • Betty died July 1995 from severe diabetes. She was ill during James' funeral. Her voice was quite weak compared to it's nornal volume and clarity.

  • the lady singing the solo is Aladrian Elmore.... she can sing her face off!!!!

  • i see and hear that.

  • the service was 2 days .. friday was the wake and saturday was the actual funeral at the shrine auditoriom you had to havee tickets it was crazy

  • I was there also and my mom was and is still apart os so cal comm choir... most of the members have passed away. and its a big lot not kmart.

  • My grandmother is still apart of the So. Cal. Community choir as well.

  • They had his body showing through the whole service? and people were able to come up and view it during the service?

  • OMG is that Glodia Haynes somebody tell me thats her singing the second song

  • Betty Perkins singing 2nd song.

  • Where can I find this footage?

  • oh ok because she looks like glodia haynes but thank you

  • "Somewhere around the throne"

  • Wow! I would have never thought that this would end up on YouTube! My aunt, uncle, and I attended his funeral because she was a member of the church and he sang in the choir. Although I was young, Rev. Cleveland ALWAYS preached sermons in a way that I could understand...It was a long service but yet beautiful....i HATE that Cornerstone Institutional got torn down and turned into a K-Mart :-(

  • That was a long, long, long, funeral. Anybody knonws How long was the funeral was. Was it was days? Because he had on a different outfit.

  • I seen the same outfit throughout the whole funeral! Where did u see a different one?

  • The musical was at the "Wake" or visitation, the next day, the service was at the Shrine Auditorium and he was in his white Robe.

  • they don't live there anymo' ok...around the throne the throne....

  • This reminds me of time spent at my grandparents's house. I don't anything about the rumors. He was one of the best!

  • As I look back to the songs that were sung in this medley, I'm in my grandfather's car...on my mother's hip...my bedroom floor. And I am blessed all over again. It could be said that Rev. Cleveland quite simply made black gospel popular but in a much deeper sense it gave many of my generation (who would travel so far from home) the soul-links of faith that we cling to in those times when momma's voice can't be heard. peace be unto you...

  • whats the last song named

  • I'm Blessed is the name of the song

  • I thought that Mahalia Jackson made black gospel popular...

  • I will tell you who made it popular for gospel music it was Andrae Crouch...

  • you need to go back about 30 years before him...

  • It wasn't just one person to make Gospel music popular. It was a group effort. A lot of men and women had a role in making Gospel music popular. To over look many and put one in front would be very unfair.

  • Does anyone know the lady's name who is leading "Somewhere Around the Throne"

  • betty perkins

  • Thank you! She has such a strong voice!

  • I love James CLeveland. One of the gospel GREATS, he was.

Has anyone ever heard of Amos Davis and the Angelic Choraleers? Amos passed away in 1994.

  • I always keep my cell phone in my bosom, so when it rings, I know where it is. Funny to hear a song about it.

  • LOL..my momma does that too.

  • Please saints of GOD "I made a mistake I stand corrected on my comment. I would not disrespect Pastor Cleveland purposely. Lord Jesus please Let my peace return to me! in Jesus' name. You know my heart Lord GOD!.....Please stop sending me comments! thank-you

  • Peace be unto you, lilyofthevalley. Truely, Our God knows your heart better than any man could ever! Be blessed.

  • itsdynomyte- thank-you I stand corrected on my comment.

  • I believe this "Man of GOD " would not wanna be called a king! I believe he knew Jesus is the only true KING! No servant is better then his master!!

  • Rev. Cleveland had his own gospel label, and it was called King James Records.

It was just a title given to him as far as his works contributed to gospel music.

  • I worked with James Cleveland and he liked being called King, Reverend, Pastor, James, its simply a term of endearment. Seems like every time an artist gets a compliment, someone turns it into something bad. God could care less who gets credit as long as He gets the glory. Yes, Jesus will be crowned King of King and Lord of Lords, but listen to the biblical text "King of Kings," which means that God never negated the facts that others from David to England's Arthur were kings, just lesser ones.

  • I miss Rev. Cleveland so much. He was incredible, could tear a house down without singing a song. He was first to record a major recording at Carnegie Hall and wear out a piano. lilyofthevalley7 didn't mean to belabor the point, just got caught up. Sorry about that. No disrepect. Yeah, James had "issues" but who doesn't. But one thing for sure, he was the man! Never late, never never late, and always writing songs that we still sing today. Most folks have no clue what Cleve and Andrae Crouch did

  • Say it GospelBeast!!! Rev. Cleveland was like John the Baptist, the forerunner to Gospel music now. Sort of reminds of Kirk Franklin in a way, a person that really isn't a "singer" persay but knows music, can write, can draw literally hundreds of thousands over a lifetime. My choir recently did a tribute to Bishop Robert McMurray with a tune Cleveland wrote in 1961 called "Trust Him." I'm getting older now and bit reflective and its so sad to lose gospel giants in music and the pulpit. RIP!

  • You better teach!!!

  • Everyone of these singers are anointed and did a outstanding job. What a loss to all of us when Rev. James Cleveland went home to our Lord Jesus. Rest in peace:

    Rev. Michael Capps, Ph.D

    Bishop:

  • God is Love & His Love is 4 EVERYONE!. God never turned Anyone away. It's the humans who do the judging. Let GOD do his Job! Who anybody is sleeping with behind closed doors is NOBODY's business! It didn't stop him from Giving GOD the GLORY. Amen goes right there!

  • Somewhere Around God's Throne by Betty Perkins...Can't find a recording on the web, though if you find one let me know...my dad loves this song, thanx for posting...it's legendary...

  • I live 5 doors down from Elder Perkins and his new wife. Betty died in 1995. Look up "Outstanding Records" and click on "Religious" and scroll down to Betty Perkins. It will let you hear samples of about 15 songs. You can also purchase them from the music company.

  • does anyone kno the name of that second song??!!

  • Somewhere Around God's Throne by Betty Perkins...Can't find a recording on the web, though if you find one let me know...my dad loves this song, thanx for posting...it's legendary...

  • WHAT THE NAME OF THE FIRST SINGER?

  • That's my girl Aladrian Elmore!!!!

  • thank you. Leave the late Rev. James Cleveland alone. I can't speak for him because he is gone. I will say that I cannot judge him or anyone else, for that matter. I'm not cloaking for anyone, but I will say that God knows who and what every person is. We are always talking about men being this, that, and the other-what about women? I belive that the BIBLE tells me that he that is without sin, let him cast the first stone.

  • solong to the king

  • is there a video i can buy

  • Please don't delete things llike this becuase when somebody is helped devil gets upset... I was blessed

  • I thank God for YouTube which provides a place for this clips can be posted and view by people who was unable to attend his funeral and for parts of our history that can be shared for years to come. Much historical clips are in personal collections and YouTube provides a way they can be shared by millions.

  • please don't delete this wonderful history of our people. my 10yr old son found this to be very helpful to him.

  • Noah.....please sail away on your own ark.

    52068....Thank you for posting.

Judgers (people who judge)----check your own pockets and closets, and then look for stones.

Now for the rest.....praise God for this type of music. It has evolved to something new, but I will always have old school gospel to fall back on. Peace

  • Thank you for posting these fine clips.

  • My goodness, what is wrong with you people? I attend the church of Christ, we don't even have musical instruments in any church service but I still find this music beautiful. Gospel music in general is beautiful, black, white, old fashioned or modern. I think it's sad that people put down younger or older generations based on the type of music they prefer. Let's get right, church, and let's go home.

  • Although that first lady was hurting my ears a bit. :)

  • Well, old people are always talk about how the music today don't bless. How do you think we feel when you put down Kirk Franlkin, Tye Tribett, and others??? When I heard that guy on your clip sing, "I got a telephone in my bosom" I was like, Oh my gosh.

  • Obviouisly you don't understand anything about gospel music for this is the music of Kirk Franklin and Tye Tribett without it they wouldn't be who they are today.

  • Do u even comprehend what he was trying to say?? It was an old expression of saying one has a personal connection t talk to the Lord in other words from their heart..

  • What a spooky funeral. HE looks so dead in that casket! The music sounds creepy-and they got the nerve to complain and say today's gospel music is not Anointed. Oh my gosh, did a lady sing this video say, " I got a telephone in my bosom" LOL!

  • *** I almost regret posting these video clips. I've deleted alot of racist comments about black people, our gospel music and our gospel singers. I'm truly amazed by the rude, mean, hateful comments from our own people that offend everyone who has enjoyed these clips. We are all entitled to our opinion, but PLEASE don't let these few comments disturb your faith in GOD or in our people or in our gospel music legacy.***

  • Whatever you do please don't delete these clips of James Cleveland. There are some viewed these clips for the firs time like me, and are glad that someone have of clips of his funeral. For the songs bring back memories of the Old Landmark that we as of race have over and over again prayed our way for a better day!

  • plz dnt delect this video am a very young man but am old school ths video is history choirs n other ppl need 2 knw wat real music is albout sing choir sing if it wasn't for mr cleverland some musicans won't have made it 2 day n thats my five cents on that

  • Please don't delete these clips. Some people just don't appreciate good music when they hear it. James Cleveland was one of the all time gospel greats and there hasn't been anyone close since he died. Ask Kirk Franklin and Tye Tribbet who their influences were growing up and if they don't say James Cleveland is one of them, they are out of their minds. This man paved the way and although I'm a youngin' myself(28) I grew up on James Cleveland and respect the legacy...

  • That second song by Betty Perkins, my goodness. It touched my heart.

  • me 2!!

  • @cgillardGQ Me too.

  • I just wanted to say thanks for posting this. I grew up listening to Rev. Cleveland. What an excellent tribute. To everything else being said-God ALONE will be the judge and for that we ALL need to be thankful.

  • I cant believe that is even a subject to talk about while this music is being posted...no respect at all...

  • It's funny how people can criticize, because in the church, there are liars, people who cheat on their spouses, deacons taking money, people who fuck for money belive it or not, and it's all in the church. I don't know if the man was gay or not, I never met him in peron. Went to many of his concerts and even some of his morning worship services when I visited L. A. I had a chance to see his second wife. His daughter LaShone is still living. She was by his first wife. 2nd wife stays in GA

  • i NEVER knew that he was married OR had kids!!
