This is one of very few things about which I disagree with Hitchens. He is a great orator and I can understand his passion for public debates but I would have never guessed he would hold that stance. These hypothetical questions are ridiculous but if someone gives an honest answer then their response exposes a part of their psyche.
I remember that conversation with Dawkins. It was on the four horseman interview.
I was really surprised when Hithcens said that too; and at the same time my respect for Dawkins grew a little bit because I realized he truly believed in what he stood for. Even though I was a theist at the time.
i feel so aswell. and, incidentally, if that is indeed hitchens' feeling, it's one which i would share. variety is the spice of life, and the most peculiar irrational oddballs can add great value to our little planet. <3
hitchens always rails against the evils of religion from a far more moral POV than dawkins. i feel he would appreciate a secular world with a variety of theists (perhaps creating devotional art behind bars in a zoo :P), provided they did not cause trouble, start wars and mutilate children's genitals.
@yington yeah, i agree. but an arrogant absolute perspective is the onl position you can plausibly argue for God from.
Theists are always fighting with one hand tied behind their backs, as the position is rationally untrue. Truth is still the ultimate tool in debate.
The most common position they use is to dilute religious teaching to the point that they appear ridiculous. First the point that the bible is "the word of god" goes out the window, then young earth creation, then [...]
[...] old earth creation, then evolution, then the bible as a whole, then theism itself is unenforcable, and agnostism is the point at which it's game over. the house of cards crumbles. (obviously for judeo-christian stuff. for a bit of variety, i'd love to see a few pagan gods get taken down too :D).
He has said before that religion is the source of all evil in the world and now he wouldn't get rid of it? I am disappointed CH.

Dawkins best uses Science whereas Hitchens uses reason and logic.
They both are my number one hero!

The thing about Christopher is that he is a contrarion; he is not happy unless he is on the fringes.
I only realized this about him after reading Ebert's recent article on Hitchens over at his blog this summer.

I can imagine the expression on Dawkins' face. Mouth agape, brown furrowed - "WHAT DEW YOU MEAN YEW WOODN'T DEW IT?"

I forgot that that the motion was "Is Christianity Good For the World?", which makes his ability to argue his position well even more impressive.

The utter arrogance of Douglas Wilson in this video is astonishing. Who the hell does he think he is.

@yington May I ask why? I can't see anything particularly arrogant about him in this video.

I think the conversation he's recalling was from the Four Horseman conversation. I remember it quite well.
