Angela Gheorghiu is perhaps the best of the sopranos today. She was wonderful in her recording of Carmen with her husband,, Roberto Alegna,, who was also very fine as Don Jose.. The BEST, however, is that person without peer, Maria Callas. She does have a beautiful and powerful voice..no doubt..

@KingOfErehwon We have the famous school of music "JULLIARD" but it's so expensive that the American children rather go to American Idol. To be an opera singer takes a lot of time and guts to model, chisel your voice. It's not enough just to have a beautiful voice and thst's it. Angela when she was 14 has been taken to a boarding school of music where she spent 4 years and then she whent to Romanian Music Consevatoriumfor 5 years and only then she has been admited on opera stages. Here she is!

@alexliliryan Based on your suggestion, I did watch Angela's performance at the Bumbry event. Another wonderful performance, to be sure. It is nice to see Romania represented by such talent, especially after so many years of terrible repression. She helps give its citizens hope for a new beginning as the country still struggles with the yoke of corruption and poverty still left from the Ceausescu years.

i would not say bad character but rather very striving and ambitious. verginia zeani was a great opera singer and the role model of angela gheorghiu. she admited that she missed a lot because of her too delicate, elegant and reserved attitude. so it's a world where when people fight you, you gotta fight back and defend your position. she is just great! so much work and talent behind this divine voice! bravo!

I generally don't like Gheorghiu in this role because I think Butterfly calls for a more lyric (and sweeter--therefore more innocent) tone. However, I think her tone is great in this performance.

@operaboi1992 I completely agree with you. Angela has a wonderful voice with a huge variety of tones, but somehow it does not perfectly fit with with this opera. I I suppose her voice is too much technical for this, and sometimes she so much focuse on the perfection of the notes, that she forgets the meaning of the text.

However, I have seen her interpreting Tosca a few years ago in Munich, and she made such a performance... Half of the audience was crying, including me :)
