love everything CKLW....MY TOP 5 radio stations listenable from Rochester NY: (western new york on Lake Ontrario) #1-CKLW, #2-WKBW, #3 -WABC, 4-WLS 5-CHUM
Thx for posting this aircheck.Loved the Big 8.,esp Ted the Bear,Super Max,Scotty Miller,Brother Billy Gables.Sad that radio will never sound this good again. We didnt know how lucky we were at that time.It was a special time for sure. Also loved WLS as it boomed into Windsor at night.John Landecker,Jeff Davis and Yvonne Daniels.
Hey, Scott: did you work in Pittsburgh? I thought I heard you on Energy 105 WNRJ back in '89...'NRJ was one of those stations at 104.7 that didn't last long. First it was WYDD, then Power 105, then NRJ, then EZ 104.7 WEZE, then WORD-FM, then WXRB the Rebel 104.7 Hit Country, then WNRQ (the Revolution) then WJJJ as a smooth jazz station, now they're WPGB, they've been news-talk for 6 years. I used to listen to 'NRJ, they and Mix Jams were much better than B-94 back in the day.
When did CKLW go big band? I think it was 1983 or 1984? I can't remember, but this is a surprise that they were playing this kind of music as late as 1981-82! Presently CKLW is talk now and the big band stuff used to be on 580 CKWW that is more now a classic hits station.
Hi Scott. Another viewer was asking about the big bands. As for me, I hope you like this aircheck I made of you. My friend Tom and I were both in high school with radios and tape recorders late at night growing up with CKLW, WKBW, WLS, WNBC, etc. WABC went talk just as we finished high school and so on. You always had a good show. My favorites were you, Ted Richards, Doug Rollins and Charlie O'Brien.
@manyvideoinerests Interesting, I know they went to talk in early 1993. They are still talk, and in case you didn't know CFCO is country and 580 was big band for a while, and is now adult contemporary. Do you know what happened to any of the guys who worked at CKLW when it was big band?
@manyvideoinerests According to old Billboard articles on Google Books, the date for the changeover to Music of Your Life was October of 1984. But they had been doing automated AC for several months as another poster mentioned.
Also on Google Books is the Billboard issue from the summer of '82 that devoted a special insert to CK's 60th anniversary. By then they really were more of an adult Top 40 and could no longer play harder rock.
This is the same Scott Miller who was on 1170 WWVA back in 1984-1985 doing the all night trucker show. He was one of my mentors, one of the reasons why I had a chance to be in the business. If you have any airchecks of Scott on WWVA please post them.
No it's not. That Scott Miller didn't work at CKLW. I did. He called himself the Real Scott Miller (Although that's not his real name, and it is mine. ha ha)
Scott just left radio and is in Chattanooga, TN. I recently moved back to Canada, and Vancouver's 1049FUNFM.
Hi Scott. Just caught your latest message here on my video. So what do you think of the video? I never imagined it would all be gone. Otherwise I would have made 100 aircheck cassette tapes!
That was the last AM station of it's kind in the Motor City. WDRQ and WHYT were on FM and taking their toll. By 1984 FM 94 was supposed to be Top 40, but Canada's CRTC killed that off.
@marc1178 The Big 8 had bwhereeen under siege from FM stations back to the mid-'70s. In addition to WDRQ as Top 40 and later Urban and (starting in the fall of '82) WHYT with its Mike Joseph Hot Hits format, CK was also getting hurt by the album rockers (WRIF, WABX, pre-country W4 and later WLLZ) and likely also urban WJLB. Detroit was one of the first markets where FM came into its own, and the AM stations paid the price - 1310 AM has never recovered since the death of Keener 13.
CKLW has always been a very powerful 50,000 watt station. Reception has in fact been reported as far off as Little Rock, Arkansas, New York City, and sometimes the Toronto Area.
Dont forget WLS Chicago another great AM station!!!

CKLW left the format in April of 1984. But did an adult contemporary (soft ac) format before going MOYL.

I have two full-length airchecks of WWVA and will check them. However, my notes show that I did hear Scott Miller on WWVA on August 19, 1981.
