  • love this film and blonde fist well done to margi clarke for both films and to alexandra pigg like her also in brookside, she played marie jacksons sister

  • I saw it at the pictures when I was 15 when it first came out, one of the best British films of the 80s.

  • what a fantastic 80s film. i actually remember it being filmed in and around liverpool, especially kirby and the city centre. bloody brilliant ! ......lol...

  • I've been trying to get hold of the soundtrack because I have never forgotten the small hypnotic musical phrase in this music even though I only saw the film once.

I've been singing it all these years from memory as I was under its spell (almost had the right tune!). But it's fabulous to hear it properly again.

When I heard that phrase for the 1st time in over 20 years I got goosebumps - it's so beautiful!

The phrase gradually builds up and repeats twice from 2:33 - 2:57. Gorgeous music.

  • @GeneralLawlessness you might be pleased to know i hum this tune too!!!

    for same amount of years

I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST ME

    AND I WAS MAAAD

  • @ clazza01 - Good to know you love it too! And what's wrong with being mad anyway? All my favourite people are completely cuckoo.

  • Absolute classic. I loved that Liverpool compared to the current regenerated identikit city.

  • couldnt agree more mate, I miss my city the way it was

  • I saw this at the cinema!!!

Now got it on dvd - ebay!

    Excellent EXCELLENT film.

I love happy endings . .. though, I'd have liked to have seen a sequel of how Elaine got on in the USSR!

  • Oh God.. me too!

  • Yeah I saw this on cable a number of years ago. This clip is for the first nine minutes. Did somebody post the rest of the movie segments?

  • A great opening scene. The aerial shots and music are just beautiful. The film is not bad either !!

  • fantastic film!

  • I think this film has only ever been shown on Channel 4 once. A long time ago too.

    WHY not show it again?

  • One of the most memorable movies of the '80s for me

  • great film and Margi is great in it too

  • love this movie!wheres the rest of it?

  • Margi Clarke is still hot!

  • i agree a superb film , about real life and people, top notch copared to some of the shite out today , p.s. please someone tell me where i can get a copy of the track "heavens above " by bronski beat , it plays before "hit that perfect beat " in the club , HELP PLEASE ive been looking for years.

  • Please post the rest of the film!!!

  • So evocative. My partner Stephen died of an HIV/AIDS related illness the year this film was made, and I went to see this fil as a sort of homage. We spent many, many happy days in Liverpool. Thanks for posting, and RIP Stephen, God Bless. X

  • I'm so sorry for your loss. He must have been a lovely person.

  • Thanks for that, so kind of you.Yes, Stephen was a very positive force in my life and this film is suberb too.

  • Thanks for the reply. I've always wanted to see this movie. I'm going to see if my local library has it. I love the actor Peter Firth. I lost a good friend of mine from high school from AIDS in 1994. His name was Luis.

  • So sorry for your loss of Luis too. Do try and see this film, its very raw and realistic of Britain in the 1980's, but life-affirming too. Peter Firth is excellent in it, and his portrayal of a Russian sailor is more that plausable.

  • Sorry it's not realistic of the Britain I lived in in the 80s - but I agree it's probably a true portrait of Liverpool .. as it was filmed there.

  • Yes a graphic portrayal of 'life in a Northen town' in the early 1980's. Very, very true to life for a lot of folk, and a cracking film too boot.

  • 'tell Igor I love him!'

  • yes

she should have gone with elaine

    haunting music

    wonder what happened to elaine?

    what do you think?

  • Ive met Margi loads of times, she's boss.

  • Telephone this guy in Liverpool:

    07896 061382

He does the film on DVD,all above board.

  • fantastic film real................

cant believe margi clarke is working in a market now?

wish the rest of film is on here

  • the music was fab! does anyone know the song thats playing in the club when they meet?

  • Bronski Beat - Hit That Perfect Beat

  • The soundtrack was released on vinyl many years ago, but no CD I'm afraid(would have been a nice addition for a collectors edition of the DVD).

I saw Margi Clarke do stand up once at the Band on the Wall in Manchester, boy was she rude!!!

This is my favourite film ever.

  • I love this film - it is my favourite ever. If anyone knows where to get hold of the soundtrack on CD, I would be very grateful. Or a download even?!

  • more of this film please

can we have the scenw when elaine visits the russian embassy then she stands by the docks watching the sunset thinking of peter and her future

also the the scene when they rob the guys in the club and steal the car hilarious

    also the final scened pleaseeeeeeeeee

    oh please xxxxxx

  • great film this, live in america now and came back to see my family me and me sister stayed up all night watching it with a bevy, laughed so much.

  • I have looked everywhere for the soundtrack, I have the DVD but I would love the soundtrack so I can listen to it in my car etc etc

  • A few years before this film was made Peter Firth starred in Tales of the Unexpected "The man at the top" where he's trying to get ON a ship ... and he was noticeably English ... and sadly he'd murdered the man at the top earlier that evening. "There's one I did earlier"

  • I love this movie and would really like to find the soundtrack as it is wonderful. I visited Liverpool because of this film.

  • me too!

and i stood at the dock looking out on the water as Elaine did!

  • I seen Margi Clarke in the heritage market Liverpool where she now is selling some sort of beauty products. She hasnt changed much after all this years.

  • Fab. One of my favourite films. What a brilliant script.

  • My favourite film of all time - (apart from Rita, Sue and Bob too). Also like Franke Clarke's other films, Blonde fist (can't get it anywhere!) and The Fruit Machine (got it off ebay). They should be released on DVD. Letter to Brezhnev is out on DVD by the way. Stay smiling, Margi, Frank, Angela and the rest of your family! FRANK - get a follow up written - suppose it's a bit too long now, but get writing again!!!

  • Fantastic that you posted this!

Many thanks. I cant find it on DVD or VHS,

Had the soundtrack in 87. Wish to God I still did.

  • Given away free with The Guardian about 2 months ago. Ebay will be flooded with them.

  • This is a great movie. Didn't appreciate it at the time being in my teens back then in the 1980's but now I do.

The scene in the local club before they go into town is a classic...both women sitting there and one wearing her whites from the factory. It's the music and the silence in between the dialogue that is such a contribution to it's value as a movie.

  • Thanks for putting this up, launton, this is my favourite opening to a film EVER! The music is so atmospheric and magical!
