love this film and blonde fist well done to margi clarke for both films and to alexandra pigg like her also in brookside, she played marie jacksons sister
what a fantastic 80s film. i actually remember it being filmed in and around liverpool, especially kirby and the city centre. bloody brilliant ! ......lol...
I've been trying to get hold of the soundtrack because I have never forgotten the small hypnotic musical phrase in this music even though I only saw the film once.
I've been singing it all these years from memory as I was under its spell (almost had the right tune!). But it's fabulous to hear it properly again.
When I heard that phrase for the 1st time in over 20 years I got goosebumps - it's so beautiful!
The phrase gradually builds up and repeats twice from 2:33 - 2:57. Gorgeous music.
i agree a superb film , about real life and people, top notch copared to some of the shite out today , p.s. please someone tell me where i can get a copy of the track "heavens above " by bronski beat , it plays before "hit that perfect beat " in the club , HELP PLEASE ive been looking for years.
So evocative. My partner Stephen died of an HIV/AIDS related illness the year this film was made, and I went to see this fil as a sort of homage. We spent many, many happy days in Liverpool. Thanks for posting, and RIP Stephen, God Bless. X
Thanks for the reply. I've always wanted to see this movie. I'm going to see if my local library has it. I love the actor Peter Firth. I lost a good friend of mine from high school from AIDS in 1994. His name was Luis.
So sorry for your loss of Luis too. Do try and see this film, its very raw and realistic of Britain in the 1980's, but life-affirming too. Peter Firth is excellent in it, and his portrayal of a Russian sailor is more that plausable.
A few years before this film was made Peter Firth starred in Tales of the Unexpected "The man at the top" where he's trying to get ON a ship ... and he was noticeably English ... and sadly he'd murdered the man at the top earlier that evening. "There's one I did earlier"
I seen Margi Clarke in the heritage market Liverpool where she now is selling some sort of beauty products. She hasnt changed much after all this years.
My favourite film of all time - (apart from Rita, Sue and Bob too). Also like Franke Clarke's other films, Blonde fist (can't get it anywhere!) and The Fruit Machine (got it off ebay). They should be released on DVD. Letter to Brezhnev is out on DVD by the way. Stay smiling, Margi, Frank, Angela and the rest of your family! FRANK - get a follow up written - suppose it's a bit too long now, but get writing again!!!
This is a great movie. Didn't appreciate it at the time being in my teens back then in the 1980's but now I do.
The scene in the local club before they go into town is a classic...both women sitting there and one wearing her whites from the factory. It's the music and the silence in between the dialogue that is such a contribution to it's value as a movie.

Sorry it's not realistic of the Britain I lived in in the 80s - but I agree it's probably a true portrait of Liverpool .. as it was filmed there.
Sansash01202 2 years ago
Yes a graphic portrayal of 'life in a Northen town' in the early 1980's. Very, very true to life for a lot of folk, and a cracking film too boot.

The soundtrack was released on vinyl many years ago, but no CD I'm afraid(would have been a nice addition for a collectors edition of the DVD).
I saw Margi Clarke do stand up once at the Band on the Wall in Manchester, boy was she rude!!!
This is my favourite film ever.
