This great song is part of County Durham's heritage. Until1974, no thanks to Edward Heath, Sunderland was part of County Durham. So the song is ours, as Wearsiders. So stop arguing. It'll only make the Mags laugh! I had an uncle born in Southwick (Suddick) died in the DLI 1918.
@georeff23 I worked with a Geordie policeman in the garage at WY Police in 1963 onwards and he used to sing this...happy days.........thanks for that.....
=[ miss my childhood so much. sung this in year 4, my teacher would fetch her guitar in and play songs such as greensleeves and scarborough fair. i'm now 18 and i still love this song =]
@Spraycando yeah, i live in the US, it'd be a bit of a drain on my extremely limited income to fly out to this hill for the sole purpose of measuring it.
A part of the skin of the Lambton worm is still at Lambton castle. (i know, I`ve seen it - I run a PC Repair business and was called out to repair Ned Lambtons computer and spoke to him about it) It was very old. The family are still scared about the curse (ten generations of Lambtons would not die in their beds) - PS. The worm rapped itself around WORM HILL in Fatfield, NOT Penshaw hill. (the words were changed) and the original well is still there beside the Riverside Pub.
bloody hell, the lambton worm clock in the gallaries, i remember watching that all the time when i was a kid. They should repair that thing, and put it up again.
im a very drunk geordie, and its a durham song, but what a song.its a north east song, and whan i hear it sung it makes me heart sing along.thanks for the music marra
It's a Sunderland song...I was born in Sunderland when it was still in Durham. Penshaw Hill is in actrually in Washington. Before you come with shite I grew up in Sulgrave and Blackfell.
You started by saying it is a sunderland song and then say it is a washington song. Make your mind up. If it is Worm Hill Fatfield where the worm is supposed to have wrapped itself around then that would suggest the worm was caught in the wear in Lambton park, next to chester-le-street. Do remember that the age of this story pre-dates sunderland. And try not to swear. There's a good chap.
@imploded1 Washington, has only been part of Sunderland since 1974 Local Government re-organisation which also created the county of Tyne & Wear. Prior to that, Washington was part of County Durham.
Hmmmm.....so obviously what inspired the D'Ampton worm song from the movie Lair of the White Worm!

Heh, reminds me of singing this at school in Sunderland. Certainly a lot more fun than singing hymns! :p

the lambton worm was not cut in half.the knight wrapped himself in spikes, and the lambton worm coiled around the knight and was killed by the spikes.

And predates Sunderland, that's impressive as Sunderland has been used since 2000 BC as a place of human occupance.
