@Hotrodx199 curious! why recommend a 12 valve? I have a 04 common rail dually and I love the power, slightly more fuel burn compared to a older 12 valve but not much more! Don't get me wrong I think the older 12 vavles are great but lots of 24 valve and HPCR for roughly the same money for sale.
@katana1150 I just have had nightmares with our last 24 valve and the money we spent into that thing could of got us a first gen cummins. I mean its easier to make power with a common rail because you just plug it in, but i just love mechanical diesels. They are easy to work on and no electronics to go wrong
@Hotrodx199 Ahhh yes I hear ya on that one! The cummins is great but once things start to go wrong it can get expensive real fast. I am a member of the cummins forum and I read some of the horror stories and it scares the hell outa me. So far mine has been problem free but that might be because I follow the maintenance schedule religiously

@joeldude76 An exhaust brake closes the exhaust and causes backpressure on the engine and slows it down. It is sort of like the jake brake but operates in the exhaust. The red button on the shifter is probably the control. The exhaust brake did not come standard on that model but could be added. It really helps slow the truck and load down and really saves on the wear and tear of the brakes. Not sure when it became a standard feature but it was standard on my 09 2500 but not on my 05 2500.
@MrMicas101 ooh you sure did put me in my place, i drive truck for a living but it goes to show im sooo ignorant that i dont remember to grind gears...pretty sad you want to be like everyone on here and start a arguement and be the internet badass.
On here it's the jake brake i'm assuming..some guys who put them on their pickups mount the button there to make it look like an old gear splitter i guess! Nice vid btw
Its a butterfly valve placed in the exhaust stream regulated to provide a certain backpressure. Do a search on exhaust brakes, like BD or Pacbrake, and you'll see clearly what they're made of.
On the newer trucks with a variable geometry turbine all that is done is some programming changes to choke the turbine size down and provide the same restriction.
nice sounds like a big rig!!! i love the sound!! im looking for a nice diesel! like a ford powerstroke , or a dodge with a cummins or a chevy duramax! how much would a truck like this cost like the same year with all the upgrades??? i love this truck!
ah a older cummins (nothink wrong with old) more proven. they should get u back a good 15 grand to get into. then add 8 grade for lots of mods. lift wheels tires power upgrades. exc
@woodman1241 dude lol i had a gear vendor in my 93 dodge 3500 4x4 cummins thing was a beast lol hahaha reminded me of driving a semi if i split all gears lol
I'm impressed with the fuel economy you got while pulling them ponies. But riddle me this- was that fuel economy achieved in direct drive, or top gear?
Ahh, i have the 4 speed auto with 3.55's, so i was just giving a rough estimate using what ive sceen on my truck, does that have the 3.55's or 4.10's?
If you are talking about that red handle on the shifter it's not a splitter, it's for an exhaust brake. I have an identical one from BD Diesel for my exhaust brake.
it aint good to put them chips and shit in especially when it and atoumatic because your adding power that you tranmission cant handle and it fuck up your timing and you shifts will be off
that does happen with mine then i tap on the odomiter just right then strarts to shift right again The toruge lock fliped on the off positon though.I'm learning it though
17 mpg loaded is something to be proud of. I know someone that has around the same year dodge as this that is a 3500, auto, stock 24v and it only gets like 16 unloaded and i think it has 3:55 rears. This has 4:11 and still gets good mileage. It seems that these may get better mpg on 4:11. Maybe the peak torque is at high rpms? It turns about 2k going 55.
Dude if he runs that chip and doesnt get a aftermarket high volume fuel lift pump hes gonna burn up his injection pump. the injections pumps on the 24 valve trucks like having a lot of fuel running to them, ive burned up the injector pump on my 2001 2 times, got a 200,000 miles on it. tell him to look into a FASS 100 lift pump.
Probably the reason for them burning up is because of the engine heat. Did the same thing to our truck and it's stock. They placed it inside the fuel tank and it has been doing good ever since. It was a common problem on the 24v cummins.
No im talking about the injection pump on the driver side of the engine, its a Bosch VP44 pump its the heart of any diesel engine.
The lift pump is what you had put in the fuel tank? thats good because its probably a aftermarket one that flows more fuel. all i was trying to say was the LIFT PUMP goes bad and then the INJECTION PUMP is starved of fuel and "burns up".If you are running a chip i think you should have a high volume fuel pump supplying fuel to the injection pump just my 2 cents:)
Well as much as this guy puts money into his truck, he might get one someday. One thing he needs to do is get rid of the stock exhaust and open it up at least to a 4 or 5". The reason it's smoking because of all the back pressure from the muffer is not letting the turbo spool up quick enough causing it to spit out a cloud of smoke.
smokes nothing bad when hauling, its just the nature of a diesel. sometimes its cool but its actually a good sign on this truck the injection pump is still good :D

whats the difference between the 12v and 24v
dacrowe24 2 years ago
12v has 12 valves instead of 24 valves and 12 valves are all mechanical where the 24 valve is an electronic motor.
Hotrodx199 2 years ago
is an exhaust brake like a jake brake?
