very well done i've only started learning some ki ho'alu. I'm kinda nervous about posting my videos of me playing them on my account because I know how important this is to the hawaiian culture and I don't want to insult it's integrity but I'm in love with the music and haven't heard anything quite like you play. Very nahenahe and can't wait to hear some more.
@ringo692 Hello Nathan, I am grateful for your sensitive approach to ki ho'alu. You are correct in your assessment and I am happy you have that understanding. Play from the heart and be pono( to do what is right) and the culture of Hawaii will respect your efforts. There are countless learning resources available now days & I'd encourage you to seek some out...........Email me and I'll get some material to you.
@scoot45123 Many thanks for the compliment. i said "Slack key hula take one" as a joke because Gabby Pahinui said it before a lot of his songs. And by some fluke i got through it without any noticeable mistakes. I shot another video right before this that took me like 40 takes of pure frustration. So when i finally nailed the other one Slack key hula was a breeze............Thanks again for the kind words
I dunno if there's anything that's more unique to hawaii then this ki ho`alu style. No other music comes close. Mahalo my braddah for perpetuating this art. How u went learn the different tuning styles?
Mahalo much for your kind words. I hope your uke lesson go well & bring you countless hours of enjoyment. I am flattered that you find inspiration from the music I share. When you start your slack key lessons keep me in mind maybe I can give you some pointers. I'ts awesome that you care so much about the aina & culture of Hawaii.
Good ear, you're the 2nd person to catch it.I think I got to this tuning from another one that's a half step lower than concert pitch. And you're absolutely right about it being F# instead of "Taropatch" or Open G. Glad you still like it.
I recently went to the islands (first time 5 years ago) and have been back as often as I can afford. I fell in love with the music and bought all the classic stuff. I just found you and I can't tell you how much you have influenced me. Mahalo nui from me.
Thank you so much for that comment. The fact is that about 30 years ago I actually sat down & played a song with Gabby!!!I barely knew slack key back then but it didn't matter to him. I was totally in awe back then and feel the same to this day. Thanks again for mentioning me in the same breath.
You are a great guitar player, wow, I love to watch and learn. Thanks for letting people see how you play things, a little advanced for me but really inspiring.
hey commenting here from the mainland. my mom was born in the islands , my familys portigee but they love the islands so much. i stayed there for 2 months or so and loved it. i play bluegrass which is a talented style in its own but i LOVE hawaiian slack key guitar. your a prodigy my friend , i have been listening to everyone of your songs. im gonna start learning how to play slack key , its absolutely amazing how you make those sound come out of a guitar. your great man , keep pickin.
This is lovely, but it ain't in the key of G. I know the key of G when I hear it, and this is not it. It is actually in Gb. Did you tune your guitar to Taro Patch, and then drop every string one fret and forget to tell us that you did this? Shame on you.
Yo Bill, I plead no contest,I didn't realize it until after I posted the video.I must've tuned to "Taropatch" from Ozzie's "C6th Maunaloa" which is actually 1/2 step lower than "C" That's the only explanation that makes any sense. Thanks for catching it because I'd completely forgotten about it.My "Ku'u Kika Kahiko" video might also be 1/2 step lower because that's how Ozzie recorded it.Anyway thanks for letting me clrify this & my humble apologies for the oversight. Braddah Duke
oh boy! this is sooo sweet. you are wonderful! i wish we were sitting on the beach and everyone watching the sun go down and not on Lake Superior either haha. i want to learn slack key, i don't know what the open tuning is? i bought a koa guitar cause i was missing kohala, seriously, i did, but i am not very good! but...i can pick! anyway, this is really fine and i want to move back to kohala so bad now i hear this again. thank you i will keep watching, you are on my favorite list aloha xoxoxo
Not quite."Dropped D" is D-G-D-G-A-E.This is "Open G Major" AKA "Taropatch" D-G-D-G-A-D the difference being the first string is tuned down a whole step.
Got the Taylor from Island Guitars in Ward last September.First decent guitar I ever owned. They just brought in the same 200 series with cut away & electronics for $1200.Your Martin probably cost a whole lot more, nice guitar btw.

SirDuke, you are way to modest, I came across Slack key by accident, when I heard some Keola, some years back.
I don't hear much difference!!

Thank you for the high praise. To be mentioned in the same breath as slack key icon Keola Beamer is quite an honor.

Beautiful. But, it looks and sounds like you are playing in Open F# instead of Open G. When you strum it open, it comes out F#, right?
Good job.

You're right my braddah,I only caught the first
string difference.Guess that's what happens when
you don't read music.Until I looked it up I had
no idea what note each string was tuned to.I
play 4 other tunings & only with the tuner can
tell you what each string is tuned to.Ha ha ha
my bad.
