Peter Gabriel as the front man..but I don't think phil collins will like that as he is the front man of a band he did not create...but only participated in as a drummer and backing vocalists.
There would be serious reverberations if Peter Gabriel was to make a come back as Genesis's front man....Phil Collins could not take that because he caused band to split due to his money grabbing ego. "Buster" must rule etc. But it would be great if it happened. Dont count on it my friends. Money speaks.
Powerful, enthralling, mind-blowing, massive and delicate, I can't find enough words to express the energy driven by Supper's Ready and Peter Gabriel's performance. It is a gigantic blow into the face of computer-aided music and monotonous drum machines....
I wasnt even born when these guys did some of the most amazing music I have ever heard (born in 1986 when Gabriel and Collins were doing crappy pop music). Gabriel, Collins, Banks, Rutherford, and Hackett back then had more talent in their hands than any music artist of today have in their entire bodies. Its a shame about Collins injury because I would have loved to see them all perform again. Genesis was mint back in the days.
Gabriel's powerful and monster shout when he goes "Jerusaleeeem" at the end 7:56 still makes me want to thank Genesis for all the emotion and talent I could never see live.Gabriel's potence is even better appreciated on the Leicester version included on the promo set of LIVE.Thanks and regards Tommygun1028 (so there's more behind the sun other than the official boxed set? :)

Phil Collins can no longer play drums or keyboard at all. The position he sat in while he played drums pinched his spinal chord and damaged it over the years. He had to have his sticks taped to his hands for the last time he went on tour.
@mangione56 Phil Collins had a surgery to attempt to fix his spinal chord earlier this year. Although the surgery was a success, he still cannot play the drums or the keyboard. He will not be able to play them in the foreseeable future. He will definitely not be playing drums or keyboard when Genesis is inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year. I don't like it, but it's all true. Check his official site and you'll see I'm not lying.

I tend to agree. Genesis was never as good after Gabriel left, but give Phil some credit.
Not only was his voice a reasonable facsimile of Gabriel's but he made Genesis more user-friendly (is that good?) with his sunnier disposition. And he sang lead on the last two really good Genesis albums: Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering. It was later on when he realized that a fortune could be made doing 4 minute pop songs that Genesis became a good but much less interesting band.
I remember hating the whole "Invisible Touch" album when it came out. In retrospect, it is a good Eighties pop record and it did make some very good musicians a ton of money. But to think that this was a band that was playing "Dance on a Volcano" and "Squonk" ten
years earlier made it a sad affair for old Genesis fans like me.
why do a majority of people blame phil, did you not realise it was the band as a whole that made that decision not the guy singing at the front. Thats what Genesis was always about was it not, a whole group of fellas putting the music together, not one man writing it down and everyone else following!
him becoming the "star" of the band and Genesis' evolution into a more radio-friendly megagroup that occasionally bordered on "easy listening." Considering what little was left of progressive rock in the late Seventies and early Eighties, can one really blame the band for going in a more pop, MTV-era direction. Gabriel went in the same direction and his music continued to be intelligent and creative.
But essentially it was the whole bands idea, not the one man they blame, if your going to blame one man look at the others around him is aswell, i dont mind a few of there '4 minute pop songs' such as I Cant Dance, Mama and Tonight Tonight Tonight, but they still brought some great lengthy pieces out at the same time, look at Home By The Sea and Domino Pt 1 & 2, my view they still carry that epic element.
I agree. With Phil Collins as frontman, did Genesis really have any choice but to go in the direction they did? Let's face it - Phil's personality is less edgy than Peter Gabriel's and as a result, the music naturally had to follow in that way. And as you said, a lot of the material on those later albums was pretty damn good.
Hit the nail on the head! I'm glad your not one of those people that feels they have to give the man a load of shit when he did a great job. Peter was wild and I like that about his work, where as Phil was a bit more mainstream but I enjoy it just as much, and honestly, we all know Tony Banks is the greatest man in the band :D
Phil Collins is an immensely talented man. Great drummer, good singer, terrific front guy. Maybe he did so a little too far into the mainstream, especially in his solo career.
But I still remember being VERY pleasantly surprised when I heard "Trick of the Tail" and saw Genesis on their "Wind and Wuthering"
tour. Any reasonable person could not expect things to be the same with Gabriel gone and audiences now in the thousands as opposed to hundreds. And Tony Banks rules!
Agreed, I actually prefer him better in Genesis than his own solo career but of course theres the odd song that stands out for me like In The Air Tonight but thats pretty much it. My views may have been biased because im only young compared to a large majoirty of Genesis fans, i would have killed to see them in concert in there early days, with phil or gab's as singer...sadly i dont think i ever will.
One of the few good things about being older was getting to see some of the great progressive bands in their prime, mostly in the first half of the '70's. And there was NOTHING like Genesis between '72 and '74.
Im so envious, theres just nothing as magical as it these days, everything is so mainstream. From everyone my age I know where I live none of them have any clue about Genesis and their powerful music.
I'l join the chorus. I saw the SEBTP, LLDOB and TOTT tours. Fabulous band. The SEBTB concert was the best. Seeing them do The Musical Box, Cinema Show and Supper's Ready in one show, along with Watchers of the Sky, Firth of Fifth, Moonlit Knight and others, wow!
Exactly, and to support what you said, go in the search box and type in Life with Phil Collins - Interviews - I think many people who blame Phil for "ruining" Genesis really need to see that. Go for it, friends / fellow Genesis lovers.
And, REAL Genesis fans support any formation of the orchestra. As far as personality goes, Pete & Phil are pretty equal. Look at extended interviews of both artists.
Tonight, Tonight, Tonight was not a four minute pop song. It was almost 10 minutes long (the original version-from the Invisible Touch album). And, it was pretty epic in it's entirety. And, what about Driving the last spike & Fading lights from "we can't dance".
what fan doesnt have those songs though i love the long version! all those songs, completely right i was only naming a few as example and the Tonight version i was reffering to was the very cut down version
....if only he stayed behind the drums what?? Peter still would have been gone. Phil didn't even want that front man job in the first place. But, the rest of the band (including Phil) wanted to carry on.
Awesome. Seeing these videos bring me 33 years back in time, Genesis were here with the Lamb in 1975. And I still consider Foxtrot and the Lamb two of the best albums ever. This is not easy, disposable music, it's the real thing!
And Then There Were Three has SOME highlights. But, I think, IMHO, after Peter left, it all kind of fell apart. I still love the music. And, after all, that's all that matters!
Great show, super all round. What musicianship and theatrics. Wish there was more footage of Phil drumming, he is one of the greats. I love this stuff too!!
Its dark..leading up to the 6 minate mark...but in eary 74', I was perhaps 20 ft away (4th row) will never forget feeling the heat of the pyro explosion..then PG bathed in white...and I was tripping.
Right. The best part of Supper's Ready. Mucically, not a whole lot little better then this out there. Nobody did or will put a performance on like this and THIS IS 1973!!!!! With all the technology now this still smokes todays shows visually
Bloody Collins where he should be - at the drums! Gabriel was a far more charismatic and interesting singer than Collins. I don't care that Collins may have been technically superior - he's just too much of the "cheekie chappie" for this type of music. Maybe that's why Genesis had to dumb down to his level. Crying shame.
It was Peter's choice to leave the band, and they couldn't find a suitable replacement, apart from a guy called Mick Strickland that quit early. The whole band decided to go in that direction, it wasn't just Phil.
Phil did what he could to save a great band with the others, and should be praised, not scorned, for that. They DID make at least two good albums after Gabriel left: Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering - even Second´s out. It was only later that the inspiration was gone and Collins decided to move closer to the commercial scene. "More fool me".
To both "saul" & "towards": I recently read the excellent "Genesis Chapter & Verse." Yes, I am grateful that Genesis survived - I just mourn for their early greatness. Interesting to note that Collins had the most commercial success & Banks the least, with Rutherford in between. Confirms in my mind where their respective interests lay. Banks really was the key person in the group and absolutely not a "pop" musician - good for him! The post mortem could go on forever.
Please be quiet.

It was later on when he realized that a fortune could be made doing 4 minute pop songs that Genesis became a good but much less interesting band.
finylvinyl66 3 years ago
Yes, there were some good songs on those albums, but who could forget the "you seem to have an invisible touch oooh!" video.
Painful!
cleaverp 3 years ago
I remember hating the whole "Invisible Touch" album when it came out. In retrospect, it is a good Eighties pop record and it did make some very good musicians a ton of money. But to think that this was a band that was playing "Dance on a Volcano" and "Squonk" ten
years earlier made it a sad affair for old Genesis fans like me.
finylvinyl66 3 years ago
Yes, thanks for reminding me about Squonk. I just watched it again with the Carlos Santana look-alike playing.

Darryl Stuermer probably.
finylvinyl66 3 years ago
why do a majority of people blame phil, did you not realise it was the band as a whole that made that decision not the guy singing at the front. Thats what Genesis was always about was it not, a whole group of fellas putting the music together, not one man writing it down and everyone else following!
SpenceTheEchidna 3 years ago
Well, they blame Phil due to his solo success,
him becoming the "star" of the band and Genesis' evolution into a more radio-friendly megagroup that occasionally bordered on "easy listening." Considering what little was left of progressive rock in the late Seventies and early Eighties, can one really blame the band for going in a more pop, MTV-era direction. Gabriel went in the same direction and his music continued to be intelligent and creative.
finylvinyl66 3 years ago
But essentially it was the whole bands idea, not the one man they blame, if your going to blame one man look at the others around him is aswell, i dont mind a few of there '4 minute pop songs' such as I Cant Dance, Mama and Tonight Tonight Tonight, but they still brought some great lengthy pieces out at the same time, look at Home By The Sea and Domino Pt 1 & 2, my view they still carry that epic element.
SpenceTheEchidna 3 years ago
I agree. With Phil Collins as frontman, did Genesis really have any choice but to go in the direction they did? Let's face it - Phil's personality is less edgy than Peter Gabriel's and as a result, the music naturally had to follow in that way. And as you said, a lot of the material on those later albums was pretty damn good.
finylvinyl66 3 years ago
Hit the nail on the head! I'm glad your not one of those people that feels they have to give the man a load of shit when he did a great job. Peter was wild and I like that about his work, where as Phil was a bit more mainstream but I enjoy it just as much, and honestly, we all know Tony Banks is the greatest man in the band :D
SpenceTheEchidna 3 years ago
Phil Collins is an immensely talented man. Great drummer, good singer, terrific front guy. Maybe he did so a little too far into the mainstream, especially in his solo career.
But I still remember being VERY pleasantly surprised when I heard "Trick of the Tail" and saw Genesis on their "Wind and Wuthering"
tour. Any reasonable person could not expect things to be the same with Gabriel gone and audiences now in the thousands as opposed to hundreds. And Tony Banks rules!
finylvinyl66 3 years ago 2
Agreed, I actually prefer him better in Genesis than his own solo career but of course theres the odd song that stands out for me like In The Air Tonight but thats pretty much it. My views may have been biased because im only young compared to a large majoirty of Genesis fans, i would have killed to see them in concert in there early days, with phil or gab's as singer...sadly i dont think i ever will.
SpenceTheEchidna 3 years ago
One of the few good things about being older was getting to see some of the great progressive bands in their prime, mostly in the first half of the '70's. And there was NOTHING like Genesis between '72 and '74.
finylvinyl66 3 years ago
Im so envious, theres just nothing as magical as it these days, everything is so mainstream. From everyone my age I know where I live none of them have any clue about Genesis and their powerful music.
SpenceTheEchidna 3 years ago
Couldn't agree more - only later in life does one appreciate how lucky one was at a Gabriel era Genesis concert.
papasmurf1954 3 years ago
I'l join the chorus. I saw the SEBTP, LLDOB and TOTT tours. Fabulous band. The SEBTB concert was the best. Seeing them do The Musical Box, Cinema Show and Supper's Ready in one show, along with Watchers of the Sky, Firth of Fifth, Moonlit Knight and others, wow!

i am so jealous XD
how i wish i couldve been around those days to see it all
SpenceTheEchidna 2 years ago
Exactly, and to support what you said, go in the search box and type in Life with Phil Collins - Interviews - I think many people who blame Phil for "ruining" Genesis really need to see that. Go for it, friends / fellow Genesis lovers.
klwewf 2 years ago
And, REAL Genesis fans support any formation of the orchestra. As far as personality goes, Pete & Phil are pretty equal. Look at extended interviews of both artists.
klwewf 2 years ago
Tonight, Tonight, Tonight was not a four minute pop song. It was almost 10 minutes long (the original version-from the Invisible Touch album). And, it was pretty epic in it's entirety. And, what about Driving the last spike & Fading lights from "we can't dance".
klwewf 2 years ago
what fan doesnt have those songs though i love the long version! all those songs, completely right i was only naming a few as example and the Tonight version i was reffering to was the very cut down version
SpenceTheEchidna 2 years ago
....if only he stayed behind the drums what?? Peter still would have been gone. Phil didn't even want that front man job in the first place. But, the rest of the band (including Phil) wanted to carry on.
klwewf 2 years ago
@cleaverp
If you're going to blame anyone on Genesis's change of pace, blame it on Tony Banks. Phil just sang. That's it.

Awesome. Seeing these videos bring me 33 years back in time, Genesis were here with the Lamb in 1975. And I still consider Foxtrot and the Lamb two of the best albums ever. This is not easy, disposable music, it's the real thing!

Without the keyboard, this song would be lifeless. It puts the feeling into the song.

Right. The best part of Supper's Ready. Mucically, not a whole lot little better then this out there. Nobody did or will put a performance on like this and THIS IS 1973!!!!! With all the technology now this still smokes todays shows visually

I know Genesis from 1973 (first album edited in Argentina: "Seeling England..."). It was love at first sight.
To see these images so many years later is simply awesome, a big emotion and a big pleasure...

wow, I was about 8 years old when I first heard of Peter Gabriel with Big Time... Its really bizarre seeing him in his early days.
I didnt realise Genesis was originally a prog band.
Its kind of funny that the key members of the most important prog bands have contributed to so many huge pop hits

Absolutely beautiful! The genius of Peter Gabriel and Genesis .. luvit luvit!
Many thanks again to Tommy for this post. You should run for President .. if I was American, you'd get my vote, mate!

Gruntol5 4 years ago
It was Peter's choice to leave the band, and they couldn't find a suitable replacement, apart from a guy called Mick Strickland that quit early. The whole band decided to go in that direction, it wasn't just Phil.
saulgenesisfan 4 years ago 2
Phil did what he could to save a great band with the others, and should be praised, not scorned, for that. They DID make at least two good albums after Gabriel left: Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering - even Second´s out. It was only later that the inspiration was gone and Collins decided to move closer to the commercial scene. "More fool me".
towardsmerrydeath 4 years ago 2
To both "saul" & "towards": I recently read the excellent "Genesis Chapter & Verse." Yes, I am grateful that Genesis survived - I just mourn for their early greatness. Interesting to note that Collins had the most commercial success & Banks the least, with Rutherford in between. Confirms in my mind where their respective interests lay. Banks really was the key person in the group and absolutely not a "pop" musician - good for him! The post mortem could go on forever.
