Steam xmased me a 25% sale on deepsilver titles, and i can't decide wether to get risen or dead island. I'm a bit of a fantasy nerd, but i always felt the gamestyle and mechanics in the gotich series to be "meh", ad I don't want a game that's basicly only shooting fallout ghouls, oblivion zombies and skyrim draugr. I love the bethesda's typical fps gameplaystyle, but the zombies in their titles are amongst my least liked parts of their games. Then again i really love the l4d-series. Help please?
This is good but not a patch on Skyrim but that's just my opinion and besides in Skyrim you're looking at hundreds of hours of gameplay but in this you're looking at 60-70 hours maybe a bit more. Having said that though it's not about quantity it's about quality and this game is good quality.
@Latiran but, 60-70 hours is still QUITE a bit of gameplay. Much longer than that of Modern Warfare, Battlefield, and A LOT of other games. Skyrim is huge and much larger than this game, but this game still holds its own in terms of quantity. Merry Christmas from India. :)
Sure, they both have their strong points. I'm about halfway through Risen and it's fun. Good story. Combat is fine. I play it on my 10 year old, home-built PC. It's a P4 2.4 GHz, XP Pro, Radeon X1650 Pro video w/512MB RAM.

Does this game require you to learn all of your skills by training like the Gothics do?
One thing I've always appreciated about Bethesda Softworks is that they understand that it's unrealistic to think that one cannot learn on their own by experience rather than solely by training. Certainly training will increase the pace at which something is learned, self-teaching, is a major reason why experts become experts in the first place.
Other than the combat, the game looks pretty well made. I just don't like action RPGs with one melee attack sequence. I prefer either a second button, or delay/charge/rapid-press system. Special attacks don't count to me in RPGs because you aren't gonna use them too often.
Gothic 3 sucks, The graphics are bad, the combat is absolutely terrible and slow, voice acting and dialog remain to be seen. I had absolutely no idea what was going on storyline wise, it started asking me to fight things I had no idea why it was asking me to fight, or how to do it, and I died at the very first fight in the game. No tutorial no nothing. Just throws you into the game and instantly somehow expects you to magically know what's going on with everything.
@MPC4Utube the only thing I can say bout what u said is: all the more reasons to play the game, if a game really throws u in the world without a tutorial, the immersive factor will rise, allright maybe graphics and voice acting arent there, but who gives?
@kosovaarcher It's awesome. I've played for the 2nd time, just different path, and it was still interesting. So I finished the game two times, and I didn't regret it.
oblivion was boring as holy fuck balls and I don't dare try morrowind. I'll probably wait until Skyrim's GOTY edition is $30 before I buy it so I can waste 300+ hours walking around.

You Oblivion-haters do realise that Oblivion and mostly Morrowind has something no other rpg has in that amount, right? Sandbox. Oblivion has many flaws unmodded, but with mods its easily one of the best games out there. Gothic 2 is top too, but it is nothing compared to modded Oblivion. [This comes from a dedicated RPG player who has spend endless hours to BOTH gothic 2 and oblivion]
I love the shit out of Oblivion and morrowind, but that doesn't mean I love the way bethesda shafts everyone. I shouldn't have to mod everything bethesda releases to make it worth playing. That also fucks over the people who only have a console(which accounts for a big amount of their game sales). What are those people supposed to do? I made the mistake of getting FO:NV for console and had to deal with some of the worst bugs I've ever seen. Its like they don't even try.

Fun game but takes off quite slowly. It has loads of content and will probably last a long time. It was a bit to slow for my taste. In order to become f.x. a mage, you'll have to complete a series of quests that will take a very long time and some of them are quite frustrating (you'll die often). Still, most people will find something to their liking and spend hours doing it.

@blackened2008 Witchers combat system made sense for the most part. Different combat modes for different situations.
Oblivion doesn't really have a combat mechanic. It's the same cookie cutter hack 'n slash RPG setup that games have been using for so many years.
And Oblivion's story is horribly gay. If there weren't so many sidequests that made you forget the main story existed, no one would play it. Luckily there is alot of side quests and exploration to do.
@e7TSD 3 modes, and then just timing the attack by Pressing Mouse Button ? not really, Witcher 2...idk, I'm still not used it and find it very unpleasant, Parrying is not useful, dodging is bleh, the quick sharp turning makes it unreal. oblivion, you could have a normal attack, different charged attacks, blocking, using Bows and Arrows, Using spells with more Variety.
Story wise....its all fantasy, different stories, satisfy different people. I agree on oblivion story though.
So you end up in the same boat as the Witcher. The modes are a bit more complex then that, since later in the game [I guarantee you played Easy, since if you don't do it perfectly in hard, you die].
It requires paying attention to the game, rather than just mashing your attack button. It may not be the most in-depth combat, but atleast in any sort of real sword play, it's all about timing your swings to parry, block and strike [not fully implemented like that but close enough]
@e7TSD and, to be honest, a game that can be modded, adds more fun to it. and there some Beautiful mods with nice stories behind them for Oblivion. that alone, makes oblivion > witcher imo.
The story in Oblivion WAS kinda of disappointing I will admit. Thought the witcher was a better RPG than Oblivion even with less content. Much more involving in the story

Seriously? Morrowind has the worst combat system of any rpg, period, and oblivion LEVELED MONSTERS AND GEAR. I don't know wtf you're talking about I never said anything about the stats in morrowind. That said the leveling system TES uses is pretty shitty. I originally played morrowind back in 02 for xbox, but started playing it on pc around 04-05. I didn't find any mods that fixed the shitty combat system. Only since they released oblivion did they add a mod that made it like oblivions combat(which is better but still terrible). Also, why should I have to get mods to fix my games?

Yeah I imagine pen and paper D&D is a bit different than a video game. Not everything translates well. I'm not sure what you mean by "stats to level" all I know is you have to grind your character using spells and weapons over and over. Do you do that in paper D&D as well?
Every release is full of bugs and the modding community has to fix the game for them. I know nobody said I had to I'm saying I have to if I want the game to suck less.

Fun game but takes off quite slowly. It has loads of content and will probably last a long time. It was a bit to slow for my taste. In order to become f.x. a mage, you'll have to complete a series of quests that will take a very long time and some of them are quite frustrating (you'll die often). Still, most people will find something to their liking and spend hours doing it.

@branza27 yes...but gothic 1,2's graphic are so fucked!! gothic 3's graphic is OK....and gothic 4's graphic and gameplay is for kids!!! so gothic 3 is best....if we look at risen....hmm...it is...somewhere between.

@lommmp well,i d say that gothic 3 graphics are for kids.you know,graphics don t make a game,the gameplay and storyline do,gothic 3 has none of them,because it has LOTS of glitches and bugs,and the storyline becomes irrevelant and stupid,gothic 1 and 2 are raw games,the type of game in which you start poor,and people just want to rob you and kill you after,it s hard to get a decent armor and sword,not saying how hard it is killing orcs.In gothic 3 you kill orcs at the verry beginning :|

@branza27 Forget gothic 3...gothic4 does the trick of failing much much better. As for Risen, only now do I see how incredibly Gothic this game really Is....I look at the gameplay and at what the hero does and Gothic immediately comes to mind. Hell, if I didn't know it's made by Piranha, I'd say it's a very succesful clone.

@92BadBird umm did you play gothic 1 and 2? i have to admit,the graphics in gothic 3 are nice,but it lacks storyline,it has tons of bugs,and needs a good pc to run smooth(i have a good pc but sometimes gothic 3 freezes) gothic 3 doesn t feel like the other gothics....

@branza27 of course i played 1 and 2 . the first gothic game i played was 2 and i fell in love with it then decided to take the first and gothic 3 was the last i played and i was satisfyed with it the storyline was not that bad and the soundtrack was extraordinary . But 3 will never beat 1 and 2 that's for sure

Oblivion fucking sucks Morrowind looking back was alright I do however have hope for Skyrim but I won't hold my breath. DAO = BEST RPG EVER!...DA2...Sucks dick. I havn't played Risen but I'm thinking about getting it cause I like Gothic 4.

@HammockerSam Morrowind, yes. Oblivion was generic as hell and didn't even keep to their own previously written lore. Oh and that ending where you watch two guys fight in a poorly executed scene? After the ending of Morrowind?!?!?
Also, I am betting you never played Risen. There is more stuff to do, better animations, much better voice acting (even though it isn't perfect) and above all else it isn't medieval Europe like Oblivion.

I prefer The Witcher over both of them though. Awesome story, and nice combat mechanics.

sure, witcher has its own style, but like I stated, imo, Oblivion > Witcher in terms of gameplay, story ?...eh...it was kinda fun :P, Story I really enjoyed the Might and Magic Series..Dark Messiah was awesome.

@blackened2008 Witchers combat system made sense for the most part. Different combat modes for different situations.
Oblivion doesn't really have a combat mechanic. It's the same cookie cutter hack 'n slash RPG setup that games have been using for so many years.
And Oblivion's story is horribly gay. If there weren't so many sidequests that made you forget the main story existed, no one would play it. Luckily there is alot of side quests and exploration to do.

@e7TSD 3 modes, and then just timing the attack by Pressing Mouse Button ? not really, Witcher 2...idk, I'm still not used it and find it very unpleasant, Parrying is not useful, dodging is bleh, the quick sharp turning makes it unreal. oblivion, you could have a normal attack, different charged attacks, blocking, using Bows and Arrows, Using spells with more Variety.
Story wise....its all fantasy, different stories, satisfy different people. I agree on oblivion story though.

@blackened2008 Atleast The Witcher is attempting to do something different. The combat system in Oblivion has been around since the Ultima Series.
And Oblivion entirely boils down to one of three things::
Sneak + attack with a bow or dagger
Block + Attack with Sword and Shield
Or back-peddle and cast magic [when you have a mod that fixes magic damage]

So you end up in the same boat as the Witcher. The modes are a bit more complex then that, since later in the game [I guarantee you played Easy, since if you don't do it perfectly in hard, you die].
It requires paying attention to the game, rather than just mashing your attack button. It may not be the most in-depth combat, but atleast in any sort of real sword play, it's all about timing your swings to parry, block and strike [not fully implemented like that but close enough]

@e7TSD and, to be honest, a game that can be modded, adds more fun to it. and there some Beautiful mods with nice stories behind them for Oblivion. that alone, makes oblivion > witcher imo.

Seriously? Morrowind has the worst combat system of any rpg, period, and oblivion LEVELED MONSTERS AND GEAR. As an RPG its retarded that when I hit a certain level certain gear magically comes into the game. You can beat the game at level 1 in oblivion because they wanted to pander to casual gamers. A 5 year old could play all the way through oblivion its that dumbed down. Also the combat system in oblivion is also shitty. I expect them to dumb the game down even more for skyrim.

@oODropshotOo A) Morrowind has the best fucking system out of any RPG by far, it's all stat based so you actually have to WORK to be good. Oblivion is shit, yes, but that's why you get MODS, the magical things that make PCs a thousand times better than they already are. If you're comparing the console versions, then shut the fuck up right there. Consoles are shit when it comes to RPGs, so don't even go there. If you are comparing PC versions, get mods. Perfect way to make Oblivion good.

I don't know wtf you're talking about I never said anything about the stats in morrowind. That said the leveling system TES uses is pretty shitty. I originally played morrowind back in 02 for xbox, but started playing it on pc around 04-05. I didn't find any mods that fixed the shitty combat system. Only since they released oblivion did they add a mod that made it like oblivions combat(which is better but still terrible). Also, why should I have to get mods to fix my games?

@oODropshotOo The leveling system TES uses isn't shit because it uses STATS TO LEVEL. You know, the thing that RPGs are supposed to use? If you've ever played pen and paper D&D then I'd hate to be the guys that played with you. As for why should you "have" to get mods, nobody said you have to, but if you're gonna complain about something you might as well because the game is already released and isn't getting more patches.

Yeah I imagine pen and paper D&D is a bit different than a video game. Not everything translates well. I'm not sure what you mean by "stats to level" all I know is you have to grind your character using spells and weapons over and over. Do you do that in paper D&D as well?
Every release is full of bugs and the modding community has to fix the game for them. I know nobody said I had to I'm saying I have to if I want the game to suck less.

That''s the reason Gothic 3 and 4 are some pieces of shit compared to the original series... And overall nothing can recreate the great atmosphere, story and feel of the original Gothic series by Piranha Bytes! The feeling of rising from the ashes to greatness, the unique controls and combat system - simple, yet goddman awesome and unlike any other game...
