I recall that as part of their Olympic coverage, ABC carried the game back live and in full to the 'States with Curt Gowdy and Brian Conacher as commentators, since the winner would get the gold medal.
When the Czechs took a brief late lead, they sounded as if it were the Americans who had taken the lead against the Russians.
hey, has anyone noticed something REALLY weird? there are no ads on the boards! so fucking cool! God, I miss those days! No stupid commercials, no bullshit, just sit and enjoy the great game of hockey!
@GaurMiaur When russia can play in olympic tournaments without the likes of Gilbert perreault, bobby orr, mike bossy, Mario Lemieux, Paul Coffey, Brian Trottier, Jean Believeau, Guy Lafleur, Mark Messier, Stan MikITA, Bobby Hull, Larry Robinson, Brad Park, Wayne Gretzky, as opposed to some random college kids chosen as amateurs, you'll know what we're talking about when russia never beat the "real" best on best. USSR should thank there lucky stars they didnt have to face that kind of artillery.
Russia did beat the NHL's best many, many times. Come on, folks. At least put a little effort into your comments. As the uploader of the video all of them are sent to my inbox here and I cringe reading some of them. Try harder please. Thanks.
@chapaev36 I will agree that todays russian teams cant compete for gold with actual best on best play implimented by the NHL since 1998. Russia has zero gold medals in hockey and Canada has 2. And Canada will likely field its strongest team in Canadian history in Sochi 2014. With one of the deadliest defenses ever assembled. Which is Canada's bread and butter, which was obvious in 2010. Myers, Doughty, Keith, Weber, Seabrook and Bouwmeester will shutdown any nation in 2014 with relative ease.
I'm not exactly sure what your point is. Everyone knows that the Russian hockey system took a huge hit when the Soviet Union collapsed. Canada has a very strong economy and invests in hockey very heavily. The Russian economy is weak and their infrastructure extremely problematic - they're trying to build a foundation for their hockey system right now. It's a long process. As for tournaments themselves, these are always unpredictable and close, results dependent upon numerous factors.
No one really decides who wins gold. If that were true, the favorite would never lose. Besides, Canada's depth doesn't always help it out to the utmost, as one can only ice a single team. And ultimately you still have to go out there and win the game. Can't just draw up the roster and make conclusions from that.
Czechs were always weaker to Soviets. if it happened that Czechs won - so it was only because Soviets had bad day. That is somewhat true up to this day. Great Post ! Thanks !
@PetPiv Your memory is too short, if you are saying always :-). Till 1953 was Soviet hockey nothing and Czechs had already had 2 Golden medails from 47 and 49 , 3 bronz medals and one silver. And if our communist regime imported from CCCP did not put into prison 95 % of golden national team, it CCCP would had no chance till the end of 50s. Also you should realise who was the teacher of hockey in CCCP. Otherwise no doubt about quality of CCCP national team from 60s to 80s. and in 90s Czechs leded
Well, no. You're wrong. I have highlight videos in my channel of the 1979 Challenge Cup as well as the 1974 Summit Series. To boot, the Soviet Union domianted Canada at the 1981 Canada Cup 8-1. The Rendez-Vous series of 1987 wound up tied. You may have also heard of the Russian teams' tours of the NHL in the 70s and 80s - those teams had very good records against NHL opposition.
fat chance, the russians have ovechkin, malkin and datsyuk. the three best players right now, so you don't look like the favorites to win gold, even though you're the host nation
Geez, fellas...hit!

When the USSR came back, they sounded dejected.

@BillyBoysing Yes, a very good player, and very Kharlamovic style.
I can make out his number, 20, but the rosters I can find do not include the number.

you for real?
Canada did not even compete in international hockey between 1968 and 1979. I guess they were the favorites then too?

"in reality, Canada is always the fave to win gold."

if they had nhl players canada would have won every time no doubt
riderfanszmul 2 years ago
Just like they "won" in 2006?
chapaev36 2 years ago
well back then they would have international hockey has gotten much better, but like back in 50s-80s Canada would have completely destroyed everyone
riderfanszmul 2 years ago
They weren't destroying the Soviets. The Soviets weren't destroying the Czechs. Heck, Canada couldn't even destroy the Soviets on their own home ice.
chapaev36 2 years ago
thats because nhl players werent allowed to play until 94. if they were, we would have won olympics every year
riderfanszmul 2 years ago
Well, hold on. The Soviets did play NHL players, remember? I have some videos as evidence.
