@crankcase - I don't discredited many of our guitarist that play right-handed, left-handed or single handed. But dear crankcase - the very fact that the guitarist actually worked out how to play superbly the way he does shows the difference between a great guitarist and a bloody genious. Find out a little bit more about him before you discredit him for not playing how YOU think he should be playing. Even I was able to pick up how to play conventionally !!!!!
Crankcase and all the other doubters...the guitarist you are talking about is none other than Jnr.Campbell...Google him if you have to.He isn't a normal guitar player that's what makes him so unique...check out Reflections of My Life for further proof....Hi JC...you show the whipper snappers how its done...lol
During this time - with technology what it was - few videos - called promos back then - had live performances. TV stations weren't set up for live performances until later in the 70's, so if a band wanted to get on the air and sound good - they either mimed/lip-sync'd to tracks, or made a promo. Yes, they're outside, miming. See? Look, ma - no amps and sound system and they still sound REALLY great - just like the record.
Anyone ever notice what a lovely stage presence that guitar player has? He moves in for his solo, keeps in contact with the listener with his eyes, looks mighty fine in those slacks, erm.....never mind. :-)
You'd think they'd make these videos at least slightly believable. On the electric guitar runs from 1:07 onwards, the video has a left-handed guitarist playing a right-handed acoustic upside down and playing the wrong notes! I'm sure Andre Preview would have something to say about that.
@CrankCase08 Hello Crankcase - not only does the guitarist play upside doon, using "open E tuning", in this - he also played with the strings remaining right hand strung - i can see why you've raised the issue, but sometimes things are just not what they seem - and of course the band are miming - it's a video promo, shot in a Sussex country estate one Sunday morning back in '69 - I know, the guitarist is ME!! very best wishes and thanks for the interest .. jNR Campbell
@wcampbelljunior Funnily, but I was wondering if there was an outside chance you'd appear on this. I spent part of yesterday thinking about it and checked some other videos, noticing you do play left handed and upside down. Then I thought maybe it was because you'd borrowed a guitar from a right handed brother (or similar) and got into the habit of playing it that way. I suspect my earlier criticisms might have been a bit unfair considering the time it was made, but it was just an observation.
@CrankCase08 OK - Ever watch Paul McCartney play acoustic? He plays a regular guitar upside down - sometimes in standard tuning - sometimes in alterate tunings. The guitarist in question plays in an open tuning format and like McCartney and other lefties - he's just turned the thing upside down. BTW - the guitarist in this video is playing Open E - I myself use Open D or Vestapol and to other guitarists not familiar with open tunings...even playing rightside up - it can look a bit odd. Cheers!
This is one of my most favorite Marmalade songs. Dean's voice sounds just beautiful in this song. And I like the video shot of Junior's precise guitar work.
Damn - must be the most under-rated bands of the 60's. This and reflections of my life are real music. Where did it all go wrong with music ? Oh well...
I've always liked The Marmalade. They were such a great pop band, with some catchy and memorable songs. I never grow tired of hearing this or Reflections of my life.
The logo on the drum at the front was so appropriate for them at that time. However, if it were to be used now, it would be seen as racist or politically incorrect. How times have changed and not many of them for the better.
PLEASE join the Dean Ford Singer/Songwriter Facebook group to get our #s up! We're hoping Dean will do a live chat. Listen to Reflections of my Life and remember what a great Singer/Songwriter he is. Jimi Hendricks said he had the best song of 1967. Then, INVITE YOUR FRIENDS TOO! THANK YOU!
Baby make it - (Johnny) Soon and the Magnets! Howzit my bru! heard you still singing those 60s/70's tunes at the Chats Centre. Keep the fire burning my man!!!

@CrankCase08 Possession of facts is a great thing to have - how are you SO SURE "the guitarist is "playing the wrong notes"?
wcampbelljunior 3 weeks ago 6
@wcampbelljunior I play guitar and he's fingering the wrong notes. Obviously he's miming over an electric guitar track with an acoustic guitar.
