A family friend cut all the fingers off on his right hand while cutting sheet metal at an airplane factory over in Lakewood Industrial Park a few years ago. He got them reattached...but wow...you never think stuff like that will happen to people you care about.
I remember in middle school, a friends brother, got his fingers chopped off in a snow blower.
Small brush is bad news..! A few years ago I was cleaning up after a snow storm.. My leg got tangled in some brush and vines, and I raked the saw across my leg.. Even at idle with the chain stopped, it cut 1/8 of an inch from my femoral artery in my leg.. Lost alot of blood, but could've been ALOT worse... !
This is something I needed to see. I just bought my first chainsaw and have been itching to go cut some stuff up. I was completely ignorant of chainsaw safety because I ignored/disregarded all the safety warnings. This is due mostly to my stupidity but also because of the over-saturation of safety junk that is published with anything you buy that has moving parts. Now I will never take for granted chainsaw safety - thanks for posting this video.
Wow I thought this was going to be a joke, reason why, this same thing happened to me last month, severed my thumb, index and middle fingers on my right hand, I feel your pain.
I had a accident 5/6years ago doing the exact same thing, except I had all the headgear on, no gloves, one hand on saw and the other on brushwood. Chain snagged on the thin wood and caused the saw to fly around and land on my other hand, fortunately I only cut the skin and tissue. A tendon was visible though.
These tools must be treated with respect, they can easily cause accidents.
Too many videos here show people using saws with just a t shirt for protection
I've been watching all the "Prevent it" videos. They're Canadian ads, aren't they? Not that that makes any difference-they're still just as effective, I'm from Palatine, Illinois, just about 40 miles northwest of Chicago. I love Psas and commercials, and I love all the Prevent it ads too. There's an old saying-"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure"-and I think many disasters could be averted if more people would heed those wise words. I'm very sorry about what happened to you.
Great job on making this video. People are often careless with chainsaws. Even when you have safty gear and have worked with saws your whole life it can still happen.
The concept was to turn a bad incident into something positive. The tape was a mock to show what I had done wrong two years prior (read the wording on the photos) to help folks think about safety first and not make the mistakes I made and prevent an injury such as mine. From the number of hits the video has had I hope at least one or more folks have gotten the message and prevented their own (or employees etc) injuries. (The photos are real).
Yeah you can only use a "top handle arborist's saw" with one hand, don't even try it with a regular saw!

The back story to this video is that Kirk was treated by the same specialist that reattached Bobits penis after his wife laurana cut it off.

I'm an EMT and I've seen what carelessness and over confidence can do. If you don't respect the equipment it will teach you to very quickly.
