so much talent that gordy just fucked over in the end.it all comes back to see you mister GORDY i hopr you have got your ass deep in a church and are really praying and meaning it because you fucked over alot of people.you are the perfect example of a wolf in sheeps clothing.did you know that the devil isnot ugly like man paints him.the devil was very high on Gods list.he was beautiful.the angel of the morning until he started being an ass and got kicked out.think about that Gordy.
what was really dirty and no one can justify this not even berry gordy or miss ross.this ass hole gordy put a note on the door saying theres no more work here after the funk brothers played on all of those number one hits.they just left everyone hanging.the musicans.the groups that was so fucked up.after 14 years of working.no warning nothing. These people had homes.family.responsiblity. How could someone do this? iam surprised no one killed berry with his bullshit.Hes a lucky man!
another sad thing about this company it was ran by blacks and it should of looked out for blacks.we should of been told about the funk brothers that was young black americas history.they were robbed and we young folks were robbed.not only did they rob flo.jean terrell, cindy, eddie k.had to sign away his rights for a solo career.this place was a boiler room preying on young people who wanted to be in the business.being young,Not knowing we all wanted to be apart of.cont...
we loved florence.its not nice to talk about a friend.they say diana tryed to help florence but how are you helping that person when ever that persons back is turned you are putting knives in it?why would she take her song?friends do not do that.then she called florence a drunk.what happened a few xmas s ago?diana was so drunk she could not stand up.i do not like bringing that up but it shows what goes around comes around.people were really upset with ross.she got her way no matter what.
This is how the Supremes should have been! Three part harmony, shared leads..all diversified talents!!! Diana was great but Flo and Mary never got their time to shine.
@individuell83 As history has shown the contracts are Motown always brought into question in the latter years, if the performer had been compensated properly. And with the amount of law suits that came against Motown, I assume many of the performers felt they had not been paid what they were worth. Sometimes the devil can contract like a pimp.
individuall83 Flo's version is more soulful, Diana's more pop. The two are so different but both are unique to each singers voice and style. Diana's version was geared to move her to the front, Flo's was a showcase of her talent in the group. With Diana's greed & lust alive, she got what she wanted, she knew how. So she took Flo's lead song. When dirty Diana left Motown she the "Taker" got "Took" by Gordy, financially, like Flo and Mary. Who said there is no GOD!!!!
At any rate just listening to Flo sing her version of People, more of a GROUP effort you can hear. Flo can sing, I mean your foot would have to be in your ear not to hear this child can sing. When the song was snatched from Flo, Diane was given a softer SOLO version of the song, without much background. Why would Gordy do that. I guess lust and control all in one. Certainly there were a million other solo's Ross could have attempted. Poor Flo, never had a chance.
@individuell83 It would appear that Motown was run on Gordy's whim and whimsy with a heavy emphasis on favoritism and ass kissing, as Flo herself said she would not be Gordy's puppet would not let him pull her strings and therein sealed her doom. Flo like a few others, Ruffin, Kendricks, did not bow down to Gordy and were labeld "difficult". Whether right or wrong Gordy did have a company to run and it was his way or the highway. I wonder how history will remember him.
@ramona2400 yes that's true. Flo had her own mind, not like Diane who did what Berry told her...
I read once that in, I guess it was late 66, mary, flo and the temptations sat in a bar having some drinks and were talking about the old times and having fun.
Diane was also there, but sat on the other side of the room, when the temps said funny things and mary and flo started laughing Diane laughed too, but when they looked over she stopped and looked away.
@Individuell83 Odd, I read a similar story. But this was the Temps, Cindy and Mary during the G.I.T. taping. Diana was on the other side of the room by herself. When the Temps, Cindy and Mary began singing doo wop, Diana would sing too, but from the other side of the room. She had by this time distanced herself too much from the guys and girls . . . . when I read this, I thought it sad. What stardom does.
@individuell83 From a business point Motown found the formula that worked for The Supremes, they were smart not to change it. Credit has to be given to Holland Dozier Holland who wrote those number one songs. Likely any good singers could have become a star with great material like that. Motown was charting a solo career for Ross, when they gave here top billing. They knew they could never record Flo as a solo, due to Flo's great voice and the power Gordy and Ross held at Motown.
@ramona2400 it's true that the success didn't consist only of flo, mary and diane
it was the whole thing that made motown that successful. The Funkbrothers were an AMAZING band! HDH was an AMAZING songwriting team and the supremes were AMAZING singers but it was also the promotion that they made.
They made #1's out of songs they wanted to make #1, but they also let songs failed on the charts that they didn't want to be #1
an example is kim weston, her Take Me In Your Arms album would have
The performance here by Flo on lead, along with Mary and Diana on background show how great Flo was and The Supremes as a unit. All of the Supremes likely could sing lead on a song that was tailored to there specific voice. Songs were built around what Diana could do so why not do the same for Mary and Flo. Motown left nothing to chance, but for reasons assumed or known pushed Ross to the disadvantage of Ballard and Wilson who had talent but never got a chance to shine. What a shame.
@jazzscherzo DR isn't to blame but BG is. Florence was fine with the fact that D had the more appealing voice, it was when Berry told her she could retire at any point that she felt she wasn't wanted or needed and that's when the problems started. It was always Berry. Why people bring Diana into the equation i don't know. She wanted to be a success and was making sure that she was.
This is a great example of what THE SUPREMES brand was all about!
TOTAL DIVERSIFIED TALENT!
THREE WOMAN with their own unique talent molded into one!
One agenda change it, greed and the absolute power(the liaisons of Barry & Diane) will create the atmosphere of deceit and betrayal that will oust Florence, rendered Mary powerless and a peon validated Cindy giving Diane total image control while talent was stifled, money coming with Diane forefront and the rest her shadow!
@jazzscherzo It all comes down to song writing and exposure. DR was a solo artist when BG made her lead. The songs were written for DR, and in '66 BG began promoting DR more and more, even having her speak for MW & Flo. This was smart on BGs part because, as we know DR had the sound, looks, and personality for pop. I wish he would have done like The Temps; Ruff was the main man, but Eddie and Paul got theirs. I guess what's done is done. I LOVE all The Supremes, but I love Flo the most.
@jazzscherzo Believe me, I am not knocking DR in any way, but Aretha didn't score many hits in her earlier years because Columbia didn't know how to use her voice. She was singing pop (and scored 3 top 40 hits) before The Supremes, but that wasn't her style. She was trained by Mahalia Jackson and James Cleveland so, pop wasn't her thing. When she switched to Atlantic they used her voice properly and she was on her way. And yes, she received serious airplay on white radio stations.
@jazzscherzo remember Martha and The Vandellas, Aretha Franklin and Gladys Knight and The Pips got mad airplay on every major station without soft tones and small frames. They were complete opposite to Ross. Plus, I don't think Diana was a sellout. I think BG may have forced her hand in some things, and everyone from the group left Motown broke or close to it. I guess I'm just biased because I love Flo so much. Her sex appeal, voice, beauty, attitude, etc. I like it all.
I agree with the below response. One person singing has a shorter shelf life. Eventually people get tired of hearing the same voice over and over. This was nice. Both Diana and Flo is nice.
Hearing Diana constantly made people tired of her.
I think Berry's Diana fixation not only ruined the group but also harmed Diana, personally and professionally.
True, Berry milked the group for about as much top 40 success as was possible. But artistically they could have been much, much, more - the female beatles instead of the glorified las vegas act they became.
This song is less about the lead singer, and more about the Supremes amazing harmony.
In regards to Flo's voice, I think it's great, but it doesn't stand out as a lead vocal. The Supremes would have sounded too much like the other girl groups if Florence had been lead. Her voice is more distinctive as a background vocal, and with DR's lead vocals gave the Supremes its unique sound. It made The Supremes a 'group'.
@dueroden Flo could sing soulful and soft (like on "heavenly father")
Sure her soft voice didn't sound like diane
but the fact is both mary and flo should have get more chances to sing lead. And would have sounded better on some leads than Diane. Like on songs like Heatwave, These Boots Are Made For Walking or A Change Is Gonna Come
@Individuell83 The basic set-up of a group is one lead singer. Every now and then, a group breaks this basic set-up (the Temptations are an example), but most don't. And, the original Supremes had ten--count em, TEN--#1 hits. Why change this extremely successful formula?
Now, I DO think Berry Gordy eventually destroyed the group by making it ALL about Diana Ross. Once that happened, the Supremes were no longer a group. It was just Diana Ross and two background singers.
@dueroden Three words The. Pointer. Sisters. In the period of their greatest commercial succes (as a trio) they had top ten singles with each of them singing lead (fe. anita: fire, june: he's so shy, ruth: neutron dance). They were all able to sing lead and back up. In short, they were .... a group.
I actually think Diana's instincts were to be a group member but Berry Gordy's had a d**k up his A*s about making her ultimate diva of the universe (to be continued).
@Individuell83 I agree with you 100%. But it is Mr. Gordy to thank for Diane Ross' many solos. I don't know if it had to do with their relationship, or Gordy wanting them to be a pop success. Diana definitely had more mass appeal than Flo, or Mary. I suppose Flo was too sassy and had too much of a gritty voice to lead The Supremes into pop success. Listening to Flo's interview, she didn't play and seemed to be the more out spoken of the group. She's the real leader. No Flo, no Supremes.
I love Flo but her pitch wasn't that keen here but it was good just to change it up from Diana doing all the leads. This should've been done in all their live shows to give the girls a chance to shine. Hell we all knew Diana was the lead vocalist but Berry and Diana's one sided thinking made it to be only her to put the spotlight on. More vocals for Flo would've sharpened her vocally as well as Mary. She didn't get a lead until what 1968 I guess a thanks for helping fire Flo.
@Vincent50 I only know about two or three times when flo sang lead live. That was this performence from the Twenty Grand, one from the Roostertail (I think there was one) and one from their orient tour in 66. And everytime it was the song people. Her performence of that song on the orient tour was nice. But the mixing was so horrible. There was lots and lots of reverb then after flo leaded Mary had a part and Diane's mic was that loud that she only had to "breath" into the mic to overtune flo
@Vincent50 so at the end flo sang it out but diane overtuned her because of her mic being turned up that much. it really was a shame...
I still HOPE there are some live recordings of her or at least studio recordings where flo sang lead. I think especially in the earlier years flo really had this "thing" in her voice. Her lead on Heavenly Father was just great.. sadly there is not even one sang where she ever had a chance to show off her BIG range....
What a wonderful track! Thanks for sharing! As much as I love Flo, she didn't have the right sound for the era. Diana was the best choice for lead, however, Flo and Mary definitely have their own parts to play that made this group the most successful woman's group in history! I love them all and especially Mary! She was the hottest of the three! What a smile!
yes Diane was the right choise for this pop-soul songs HDH wrote for the suprems and Berry chose her to get into the white pop charts and het got what he wanted...
But I still love flo's voice more because it was more soulful and I love soulful voices more then pop-sounding-voices
However she rare had a chance to show her voice off not even at her solo abc-record years because they used her contra-alto range and she was a soprano... I still don't understand why
@Individuell83 are you kidding? mary did not hold them altogether. she was in that room in 1967 and did nothing. florence was out. then diana was doing her individual thing in the late 60's while mary took holidays. there was also infighting in the early 70's and mary/mary's husband got rid of cindy...who was one sexy supreme who had done her fair share in the group.
Hey,i remember posting about a year ago that Faith Evens would be a shoe in to play Flo in a movie.Alot of people agreed and posted similar things,Well, someone must have read it 'cause Miss Ballards daughters summond Miss Evans to the part.Looking forward to it.:^) Now,from past interviews let Miss Ballard tell her own story.Good job ladies & thank you....
I love this version of the song. But, it's mostly a group effort. Flo's lead is very small. Diana has more to sing than Flo does. Does anyone have the true version of Flo's solo on this song. It wasn't always done this way. Flo actually sang the song by herself with no vocal accompaniment from Mary and Diane. The stage was all hers.
@proverbs1824 I never heard about that performence. I only know the studio version on on the studio version flo has even less lead then hear and she's more turned down then on this live performence.
But the performence you're talking about must have been an earlier one I think.
However let's wait maybe someone knows what performence you're talking about :D
@Individuell83 . just watched a doco on florence ballard, and it describes originally it was sung solo by florernce, a total showstopper. she apparently got standing ovations everytime she sang this. until, one night, she was said to have complained of a sore throat and asked diana if she would sing the lead vocal. well, needless to say the crowd enjoyed it so much, that berry gordy decided right there and then to have diana ross sing the lead vocal. the rest is history.
@czahnie I never heard that story but it could be true
I only heard the story that at a program I thought one that was made for the copa People was in the program with flo singing it but because of some reason it was taken out of the program shortly before the show started it was taken back into the program but with diane singing it solo and flo was really really pissed I thought it was around 67
flo had more talent then all supremes put together (and that also includes cindy birdsong and any other member of the group that came along later) i wish that she lived on to make the comeback that could've happened. it would've been the greatest way of saying f you berry gordy
This used to be Flo Ballard's signature song in many of the Supremes concert performances - she was understandably crushed when Berry Gordy decided to drop the song from the group's act-
yes like I read in some biography it was at a performence in 67 and people was at the program at the show but it was taken off and then taken back but diane should sang lead
after the performence flo was really pissed went into the wardrobe open the door wide and sang it loud as she could :D and people around all clapped and were like WOW
Actually, the true story behind the song (according to the tVONE documentary "Unsung") Flo always did 'People' at concerts, and on one occasion something happened and Flo was unable to sing. So Flo asked Diane to sing the song as a favor to her and Diane agreed and after that, Berry made 'People' Diane's song and the rest is history. Flo was devastated after that because it was really the only time she got to shine in the group and she felt Diane took that away from her.
I am sorry but Florence was stupid. If I only have one song to sing lead in the whold show, you bet I would sing that shit even if i was dying because I know they might want to take that away from me too. Or I woulda ask Mary to do it. I dont know. She shouldnt have done that.
What are you on about? Flo had the song taken away from her one night by berry gordy because Florence had a really horse voice. Flo asked Diane to sing it that night. then, after that, the song became dianes. dude, do your research first before you start claiming she was stupid. Because you'll get allot of piss Florence fans arguing with you.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
One can have great range and still sound horrible. Range is not the only thing that makes a great voice. The voice that cuts through this performance is Diana's. Her voice was the most unique of the group and one of the most unique in the music business to this day.
i know Florence was singing for a while lead on the supremes. But It was trulely mean of Mr.Gordy and Mrs. Ross to go first solo. And nog Mary or Florence that was really mean.
well she never really sang lead and when she did it was mostly before 64 on songs like heavenly father hey baby buttered popcorn or not fade away of which some weren't even released...
only ain't that good news was one song which was released on we remember sam cooke album and which was after 64 but this was rare the same with mary wilson...
Mean because her voice was to black to singing lead of the supremes oke thats a an understatement. But I think she really deserved a good chance to make a good Careeer? And how more i listen to al that old song i missed her so . I think if she still was alive she was a legend of her looks and voice incredible its to bad she never had a Chance. Florence i love you. And rest in peace. I hope you find some rest. I'am a super big fan of you. (L) Loveshere
well yes with a soul voice they didn't have reach the white pop charts that many times that's clear
but what opinion is that they didn't treaf flo kindly exspecially not berry
they didn't gave her a chance for singing lead in the later days after 65
she was pushed back with mary to give the way free for diana to take her in spotlight flo and mary knew she would go solo but I can't understand why he didn't give diana her solo career earlier and let mary and flo suffer that was bad thing
I need to say something Ross is not bad. But we al had ears. and we all can hear. Everybody hears that Florence Ballard has an extremely good soul voice. And the other question is that? If we turn back the time ? I dont think the get a12 number hits with Florence as lead. So in that opinion i will say diana was perfect for this group because the are legendary and a good History It Comes of Diana. But What i really want to say that Florence never had a fair chance to make a good Career and thats
and yes their friendship was strong but the sad thing is also in late 66 and early 67 when they didn't stand each other anymore like this they always smiled on stage any of them were good actors and they mostly know how to show that they would be happy also if they were sad or pissed off. there are only a few pic were flo looks pissed off.
Also many people didn't know what was there with flo they just noticed it when there was a new supremes called cindy and wondere what
'and wondered what happened to flo because they didn't know they had conflicts since about 1 year
the sad thing is that the real story about flo just came out at around 2000 and 2001 when the books about her were released and the interviews and here solostuff in one album
before they thought she left the group because she didn't wanted to join it anymore but this was soooo wrong
Get your fucking ears checked. Florence sounds MUCH BETTER than Diane. Not saying Diane couldn't sing but Damn, Florence was the one with the voice and you can't change that, just like we can't change that Diane got this & that and Mary & Florence were pushed aside damn.
Diane sounds like a squeaky little mouse on this song. When Mary (and particularly Flo's voice was in full volume, Diane's voice sounded small and weird. That is the reason why I always thought that this song was pulled.....Diane's voice sounds reedy next to Flo's powerhouse! If you don't hear Mary and Flo in full force, then Diane's voice sounds rather unique. Berry Gordy was always about making Diane shine regardless of the cost to mary and especially Flo.
but flo had a powerful and lovely voice which was full of feelings.
Diana was never able to put feelings in her voice like Flo.
There were some songs in which Flo trew Diana out like "my imagination" or the alternate version of "It Makes No Difference No" or some songs of the Lost and Found Album but the all weren't released in those old days.
this is my take on it.they all could sing and all three had a really good voice. Florence was the powerhouse of the three and had the most range. She could be really souful then hit those hit notes.Mary hada very sultry, smokey, sexy voice. Diana had a unique sound. It was thin and nasally but it was immediatly indentifiable. You trully cant imagine anyone leading those Supremes songs but her.But when all three of those voice combined ....MAGIC
Flo did have a powerful and sometimes prettty voice. Ross does sound tiny hear. Whenever I hear it I wince. Yet, I believe that Flo sounds nervous on this cut and a little unsure; not as at ease as she should. Just my opinion. If she was singing in church; The old ladies would be saying; "Take your time baby"...They would be saying to Diana..."bless her, Lawd."
Ya know, you are correct. I think Diana's voice is one of the most beautiful and unique EVER, but next to Flo here, Ross sounds small, reedy, and weird. LOL
Thanks for this clip. This should put to rest the lie that Flo was not a lead singer. Here she is in her glory as the strongest lead singer that group ever had. GO FLO! We still love ya.
Florence could sing, I don't care what anyone says, Florence had the voice. Besides had HDH wrote some things for Florence and Mary to lead, I'm sure we'd be jammin' to that as well
Which backs up my statement, he made a choice that put him right where he wanted to be, big in pop music. I agree with his choice. As far as Florence is concerned, I guess it is a matter of taste. If she is your preference, she wasn't to the pop music fans or there would not have been a group called "The Supremes" as we know and love them today. I'm not saying Florence could not sing, I'm saying I agree with Berry Gordy. Peace:)
Although this is a beautiful version of "People" I have to admit that I believe Berry Gordy chose the right voice to led The Supremes. Aside from the controvery surrounding the way Florence was treated, the group (in my opinion) would not have had such a successful run as they did with Diana. She was very expressive, like actors' she made you believe what she was singing. She didn't just have a good singing voice she was a character of sorts.
but people wanted Pop music at this time with soft voices and not soul music from black people like we today. And this was the reason Berry did Diana on lead cause he wanted to become famous in pop-music.
Florence had the better voice stronger clearer and with much more feelings
you must not be from detroit. i am. florence was living on Shaftsbury when she died, and Shaftsbury has always been a beautiful street. even though she wasnt a supreme, and was on wefare, florence didnt live that way. so you need to just shut the fuck up and get yo facts straight bitch. im 62 years old and i never had to curse anybody out like this. but you done stepped to far across the line
Lol. This is certainly not the best version of People. The studio version is much better, they ALL take MUCH MORE care in the way the prounce each syllable and it is much better and Flo gives a BEAUTIFUL little riff/ad-lib after Diana's verse. I have posted this version, check it out, it's called Florence Ballard & The Supremes - People
The girls did a MAGNIFICENT job on this! Considering the performance was live, they did some incredibly brave things vocally and pulled them off as if without any effort at all. Way to go, Supremes.
What a treat for The Supremes fans and especially for Miss Florence Ballard fans. The harmony was simply wonderful. Does anyone know when and where this live recording took place? Thanks for posting.
Flo singing lead with Diane & Mary - A rare treat! The harmonies are beautiful....it's a shame we didn't hear more it. I nice a dimension of TEAM SUPREMES!
Mr. Shu has another account on youtube it his new name is shuchan128 i think he has only one supreme clip on it and the others are asian clips but if we bug him enuff he might bring back the supremes clips.
youtube Cindy Birdsong "Till the Boat Sails Away" and you will hear anexample of Cindy's solo efforts. It has been written of her that she is hesitent to sing the lead. She sounds best in her lower register. You can find her singing very well on Supremes Love Train here on Youtube. She sounds great there.
If the fans Club has nothung try ther Detroit Stations - or the Museum of Moving Images (one is in NYC - maybe elsewhere too in Holly'Hood) I would bank that BG has it if anyone...
OMG There was another live version, that was the first one I had heard that was up for ages but I can't find it, it was called Florence Ballard & The Supremes - People (Live) or something like that but it looks like it's gone. I might have to upload it as I have that live recording
you need to shut the f*ckup this was gold she did it different but still great. Flo had talent running through the whole body. Their are two more people song and she took it home. And you need to speak for your self because i am a fan of her because of her voice and what power and feeling she brought to them so piss off.
So this is the supposedly legendary live Flo lead of People? Folks who think she was something special vocally really need a refill on their prescriptions. She sounds awful, and the only saving grace is Mary and Diana's backing vocal blend. Flo was not a great talent and her fans are purely fans based on sympathy and sentimentality, not a genuine appreciation of her drab, dime-a-dozen congested voice.
i think your comment is sad smoothcinnamonx, her voice sounds great here you are a minority here because more and more people are discovering that Flo did have alot of talent. so get over yourself and enjoy a great black singer cuz thats what Flo was she actually sounded like a sista not some white girl!
so much talent that gordy just fucked over in the end.it all comes back to see you mister GORDY i hopr you have got your ass deep in a church and are really praying and meaning it because you fucked over alot of people.you are the perfect example of a wolf in sheeps clothing.did you know that the devil isnot ugly like man paints him.the devil was very high on Gods list.he was beautiful.the angel of the morning until he started being an ass and got kicked out.think about that Gordy.

They knew they could never record Flo as a solo, due to Flo's great voice and the power Gordy and Ross held at Motown.
ramona2400 7 months ago
@ramona2400 it's true that the success didn't consist only of flo, mary and diane
it was the whole thing that made motown that successful. The Funkbrothers were an AMAZING band! HDH was an AMAZING songwriting team and the supremes were AMAZING singers but it was also the promotion that they made.
They made #1's out of songs they wanted to make #1, but they also let songs failed on the charts that they didn't want to be #1
an example is kim weston, her Take Me In Your Arms album would have
Individuell83 7 months ago
@Individuell83 been great, but it was canceled after it was FINISHED!
and maybe you heard of that Berry offered Flo a recording contract as a solo when she was about being fired...
not to make her successful, but I think it was cheaper for him
however he won flo's claim about the royalties anyway... not only with flo also with others who wanted to leave motown
Individuell83 7 months ago
The performance here by Flo on lead, along with Mary and Diana on background show how great Flo was and The Supremes as a unit. All of the Supremes likely could sing lead on a song that was tailored to there specific voice. Songs were built around what Diana could do so why not do the same for Mary and Flo. Motown left nothing to chance, but for reasons assumed or known pushed Ross to the disadvantage of Ballard and Wilson who had talent but never got a chance to shine. What a shame.
ramona2400 7 months ago
@ramona2400 so true
I mean in other groups other members also had the chance to sing leads
it would have been nice if flo or mary would have had the chance to sing lead for a song on every album or at least some lead-parts...

RedRoosterRoad 11 months ago
This is a great example of what THE SUPREMES brand was all about!
TOTAL DIVERSIFIED TALENT!
THREE WOMAN with their own unique talent molded into one!
One agenda change it, greed and the absolute power(the liaisons of Barry & Diane) will create the atmosphere of deceit and betrayal that will oust Florence, rendered Mary powerless and a peon validated Cindy giving Diane total image control while talent was stifled, money coming with Diane forefront and the rest her shadow!
The public got cheated!
TWTR4EVER 11 months ago
@jazzscherzo It all comes down to song writing and exposure. DR was a solo artist when BG made her lead. The songs were written for DR, and in '66 BG began promoting DR more and more, even having her speak for MW & Flo. This was smart on BGs part because, as we know DR had the sound, looks, and personality for pop. I wish he would have done like The Temps; Ruff was the main man, but Eddie and Paul got theirs. I guess what's done is done. I LOVE all The Supremes, but I love Flo the most.
terrybigteekemp 11 months ago
@jazzscherzo Believe me, I am not knocking DR in any way, but Aretha didn't score many hits in her earlier years because Columbia didn't know how to use her voice. She was singing pop (and scored 3 top 40 hits) before The Supremes, but that wasn't her style. She was trained by Mahalia Jackson and James Cleveland so, pop wasn't her thing. When she switched to Atlantic they used her voice properly and she was on her way. And yes, she received serious airplay on white radio stations.
terrybigteekemp 11 months ago
@jazzscherzo remember Martha and The Vandellas, Aretha Franklin and Gladys Knight and The Pips got mad airplay on every major station without soft tones and small frames. They were complete opposite to Ross. Plus, I don't think Diana was a sellout. I think BG may have forced her hand in some things, and everyone from the group left Motown broke or close to it. I guess I'm just biased because I love Flo so much. Her sex appeal, voice, beauty, attitude, etc. I like it all.
terrybigteekemp 11 months ago
I agree with the below response. One person singing has a shorter shelf life. Eventually people get tired of hearing the same voice over and over. This was nice. Both Diana and Flo is nice.
Hearing Diana constantly made people tired of her.
marisole771 1 year ago
continued.
I think Berry's Diana fixation not only ruined the group but also harmed Diana, personally and professionally.
True, Berry milked the group for about as much top 40 success as was possible. But artistically they could have been much, much, more - the female beatles instead of the glorified las vegas act they became.
mafketays 1 year ago
This song is less about the lead singer, and more about the Supremes amazing harmony.
In regards to Flo's voice, I think it's great, but it doesn't stand out as a lead vocal. The Supremes would have sounded too much like the other girl groups if Florence had been lead. Her voice is more distinctive as a background vocal, and with DR's lead vocals gave the Supremes its unique sound. It made The Supremes a 'group'.
dueroden 1 year ago
@dueroden Flo could sing soulful and soft (like on "heavenly father")
Sure her soft voice didn't sound like diane
but the fact is both mary and flo should have get more chances to sing lead. And would have sounded better on some leads than Diane. Like on songs like Heatwave, These Boots Are Made For Walking or A Change Is Gonna Come
Individuell83 1 year ago
@Individuell83 The basic set-up of a group is one lead singer. Every now and then, a group breaks this basic set-up (the Temptations are an example), but most don't. And, the original Supremes had ten--count em, TEN--#1 hits. Why change this extremely successful formula?
Now, I DO think Berry Gordy eventually destroyed the group by making it ALL about Diana Ross. Once that happened, the Supremes were no longer a group. It was just Diana Ross and two background singers.
dueroden 1 year ago
@dueroden Three words The. Pointer. Sisters. In the period of their greatest commercial succes (as a trio) they had top ten singles with each of them singing lead (fe. anita: fire, june: he's so shy, ruth: neutron dance). They were all able to sing lead and back up. In short, they were .... a group.
I actually think Diana's instincts were to be a group member but Berry Gordy's had a d**k up his A*s about making her ultimate diva of the universe (to be continued).
mafketays 1 year ago
@Individuell83 I agree with you 100%. But it is Mr. Gordy to thank for Diane Ross' many solos. I don't know if it had to do with their relationship, or Gordy wanting them to be a pop success. Diana definitely had more mass appeal than Flo, or Mary. I suppose Flo was too sassy and had too much of a gritty voice to lead The Supremes into pop success. Listening to Flo's interview, she didn't play and seemed to be the more out spoken of the group. She's the real leader. No Flo, no Supremes.
terrybigteekemp 11 months ago
I love Flo but her pitch wasn't that keen here but it was good just to change it up from Diana doing all the leads. This should've been done in all their live shows to give the girls a chance to shine. Hell we all knew Diana was the lead vocalist but Berry and Diana's one sided thinking made it to be only her to put the spotlight on. More vocals for Flo would've sharpened her vocally as well as Mary. She didn't get a lead until what 1968 I guess a thanks for helping fire Flo.
Vincent50 1 year ago
@Vincent50 I only know about two or three times when flo sang lead live. That was this performence from the Twenty Grand, one from the Roostertail (I think there was one) and one from their orient tour in 66. And everytime it was the song people. Her performence of that song on the orient tour was nice. But the mixing was so horrible. There was lots and lots of reverb then after flo leaded Mary had a part and Diane's mic was that loud that she only had to "breath" into the mic to overtune flo
Individuell83 1 year ago
@Vincent50 so at the end flo sang it out but diane overtuned her because of her mic being turned up that much. it really was a shame...
I still HOPE there are some live recordings of her or at least studio recordings where flo sang lead. I think especially in the earlier years flo really had this "thing" in her voice. Her lead on Heavenly Father was just great.. sadly there is not even one sang where she ever had a chance to show off her BIG range....
However ... Happy new year :)
Individuell83 1 year ago
What a wonderful track! Thanks for sharing! As much as I love Flo, she didn't have the right sound for the era. Diana was the best choice for lead, however, Flo and Mary definitely have their own parts to play that made this group the most successful woman's group in history! I love them all and especially Mary! She was the hottest of the three! What a smile!
littletimes 1 year ago
@littletimes lol alright
yes Diane was the right choise for this pop-soul songs HDH wrote for the suprems and Berry chose her to get into the white pop charts and het got what he wanted...
But I still love flo's voice more because it was more soulful and I love soulful voices more then pop-sounding-voices
However she rare had a chance to show her voice off not even at her solo abc-record years because they used her contra-alto range and she was a soprano... I still don't understand why
Individuell83 1 year ago
@littletimes but however
Mary was "the sexy one" yes Diane also called her like that
but Flo always was more my kind of person that I like :D I like them both
Mary was always the best dancer and a good performer. She was always the faithful one who hold them all together
Individuell83 1 year ago
@Individuell83 are you kidding? mary did not hold them altogether. she was in that room in 1967 and did nothing. florence was out. then diana was doing her individual thing in the late 60's while mary took holidays. there was also infighting in the early 70's and mary/mary's husband got rid of cindy...who was one sexy supreme who had done her fair share in the group.

The stage was all hers.
proverbs1824 1 year ago
@proverbs1824 I never heard about that performence. I only know the studio version on on the studio version flo has even less lead then hear and she's more turned down then on this live performence.
But the performence you're talking about must have been an earlier one I think.
However let's wait maybe someone knows what performence you're talking about :D
Individuell83 1 year ago
@Individuell83 . just watched a doco on florence ballard, and it describes originally it was sung solo by florernce, a total showstopper. she apparently got standing ovations everytime she sang this. until, one night, she was said to have complained of a sore throat and asked diana if she would sing the lead vocal. well, needless to say the crowd enjoyed it so much, that berry gordy decided right there and then to have diana ross sing the lead vocal. the rest is history.
czahnie 1 year ago
@czahnie I never heard that story but it could be true
I only heard the story that at a program I thought one that was made for the copa People was in the program with flo singing it but because of some reason it was taken out of the program shortly before the show started it was taken back into the program but with diane singing it solo and flo was really really pissed I thought it was around 67

there were also other grate supreme singers like scherrie payne with her whistle register or jean was also a really nice singer

This used to be Flo Ballard's signature song in many of the Supremes concert performances - she was understandably crushed when Berry Gordy decided to drop the song from the group's act-
christheone8773 2 years ago 2
yes like I read in some biography it was at a performence in 67 and people was at the program at the show but it was taken off and then taken back but diane should sang lead
after the performence flo was really pissed went into the wardrobe open the door wide and sang it loud as she could :D and people around all clapped and were like WOW
Individuell83 2 years ago
Actually, the true story behind the song (according to the tVONE documentary "Unsung") Flo always did 'People' at concerts, and on one occasion something happened and Flo was unable to sing. So Flo asked Diane to sing the song as a favor to her and Diane agreed and after that, Berry made 'People' Diane's song and the rest is history. Flo was devastated after that because it was really the only time she got to shine in the group and she felt Diane took that away from her.
Neno8403 2 years ago
I am sorry but Florence was stupid. If I only have one song to sing lead in the whold show, you bet I would sing that shit even if i was dying because I know they might want to take that away from me too. Or I woulda ask Mary to do it. I dont know. She shouldnt have done that.
kingnando 2 years ago
@kingnando

And nog Mary or Florence that was really mean.
lolalicouss 2 years ago
well she never really sang lead and when she did it was mostly before 64 on songs like heavenly father hey baby buttered popcorn or not fade away of which some weren't even released...
only ain't that good news was one song which was released on we remember sam cooke album and which was after 64 but this was rare the same with mary wilson...
Individuell83 2 years ago
Mean because her voice was to black to singing lead of the supremes oke thats a an understatement. But I think she really deserved a good chance to make a good Careeer? And how more i listen to al that old song i missed her so . I think if she still was alive she was a legend of her looks and voice incredible its to bad she never had a Chance. Florence i love you. And rest in peace. I hope you find some rest. I'am a super big fan of you. (L) Loveshere
lolalicouss 2 years ago
well yes with a soul voice they didn't have reach the white pop charts that many times that's clear
but what opinion is that they didn't treaf flo kindly exspecially not berry
they didn't gave her a chance for singing lead in the later days after 65
she was pushed back with mary to give the way free for diana to take her in spotlight flo and mary knew she would go solo but I can't understand why he didn't give diana her solo career earlier and let mary and flo suffer that was bad thing
Individuell83 2 years ago

Also many people didn't know what was there with flo they just noticed it when there was a new supremes called cindy and wondere what
Individuell83 2 years ago
'and wondered what happened to flo because they didn't know they had conflicts since about 1 year
the sad thing is that the real story about flo just came out at around 2000 and 2001 when the books about her were released and the interviews and here solostuff in one album
before they thought she left the group because she didn't wanted to join it anymore but this was soooo wrong

Get your fucking ears checked. Florence sounds MUCH BETTER than Diane. Not saying Diane couldn't sing but Damn, Florence was the one with the voice and you can't change that, just like we can't change that Diane got this & that and Mary & Florence were pushed aside damn.
heartandsoul22 3 years ago 2
Yes, and I don't know what is funny about it. It was the beginning of Flo's decline and it ended in her death! That's funny???
kurtsupreme 3 years ago
Diane sounds like a squeaky little mouse on this song. When Mary (and particularly Flo's voice was in full volume, Diane's voice sounded small and weird. That is the reason why I always thought that this song was pulled.....Diane's voice sounds reedy next to Flo's powerhouse! If you don't hear Mary and Flo in full force, then Diane's voice sounds rather unique. Berry Gordy was always about making Diane shine regardless of the cost to mary and especially Flo.
kurtsupreme 3 years ago
this is really lovely to Flo
I think Diana had a nice voice
but flo had a powerful and lovely voice which was full of feelings.
Diana was never able to put feelings in her voice like Flo.
There were some songs in which Flo trew Diana out like "my imagination" or the alternate version of "It Makes No Difference No" or some songs of the Lost and Found Album but the all weren't released in those old days.
Individuell83 3 years ago
this is my take on it.they all could sing and all three had a really good voice.

Individuell83 3 years ago
Flo did have a powerful and sometimes prettty voice. Ross does sound tiny hear. Whenever I hear it I wince. Yet, I believe that Flo sounds nervous on this cut and a little unsure; not as at ease as she should. Just my opinion. If she was singing in church; The old ladies would be saying; "Take your time baby"...They would be saying to Diana..."bless her, Lawd."
missbirdsong 2 years ago 2
well maybe she was nervous
I mean she had the change to sing lead LIVE which was sadly really rarely...
however I like this live performence more then the studio version because mary is also on this live recording and diane is not that loud here :D

Florence could sing, I don't care what anyone says, Florence had the voice. Besides had HDH wrote some things for Florence and Mary to lead, I'm sure we'd be jammin' to that as well

HDH did but Gordy don't wanted.
He also turned them down to hear Diana clearer but they were a group not one woman with two background singers
anyway I love flo's voice and for me it's one of the best voices the world ever had and will have
Individuell83 3 years ago
Which backs up my statement, he made a choice that put him right where he wanted to be, big in pop music. I agree with his choice. As far as Florence is concerned, I guess it is a matter of taste. If she is your preference, she wasn't to the pop music fans or there would not have been a group called "The Supremes" as we know and love them today. I'm not saying Florence could not sing, I'm saying I agree with Berry Gordy. Peace:)
noprude 3 years ago 2
Although this is a beautiful version of "People" I have to admit that I believe Berry Gordy chose the right voice to led The Supremes. Aside from the controvery surrounding the way Florence was treated, the group (in my opinion) would not have had such a successful run as they did with Diana. She was very expressive, like actors' she made you believe what she was singing. She didn't just have a good singing voice she was a character of sorts.
noprude 3 years ago 3
I think florence voice was better every way
but people wanted Pop music at this time with soft voices and not soul music from black people like we today. And this was the reason Berry did Diana on lead cause he wanted to become famous in pop-music.
Florence had the better voice stronger clearer and with much more feelings

Shu was truly a Supremeologist on YT - the stuff he posted went waaaaay back... someon said he had more than the Girls probably had themselves!
But YT gave him the boot; he's been gone almost 2 months now and sorely missed :^(....

Someone in Detroit has no doubt - or our pal Shu ;^)
I thought they did it on ES though; maybe after Flo left....
bronxbarbiedolla 4 years ago
Ha please they couldn't do it without Flo.
Cindy wouldn't have done the lead parts because she didn't like singing lead.
Na they couldn't do it properly without Flo
JonathanLGardner 4 years ago
Have you heard Cindy sing lead? Is it that she doesn't like it or doesn't do a good job of it?
quietbillionaire 4 years ago
Cindy sings lead on a song when Scherrie was in the lineup along with Mary and she sounds pretty decent.
She also sings a line it Up The Ladder To The Roof.
It is said that she does not like to sing lead but I must give her credit for her backing vocals
JonathanLGardner 4 years ago
youtube Cindy Birdsong "Till the Boat Sails Away" and you will hear anexample of Cindy's solo efforts.

I have nothing against criticism, but I hate it when someone insulted flo.
You can heat it or love it but noone have a reason to insulted her =(
Individuell83 4 years ago
Sry noname for spamming I pushed the false button and I don't know how I can make that retrogressive.
I'm happy that you like it. =)
You're welcome
Individuell83 4 years ago
you need to shut the f*ckup this was gold she did it different but still great. Flo had talent running through the whole body. Their are two more people song and she took it home. And you need to speak for your self because i am a fan of her because of her voice and what power and feeling she brought to them so piss off.
tevtev92 4 years ago
I am your opinion who a problem with Flo's am correct have am myself going away. It was really a talent.
THX you like it =) you're welcome
Individuell83 4 years ago
So this is the supposedly legendary live Flo lead of People? Folks who think she was something special vocally really need a refill on their prescriptions. She sounds awful, and the only saving grace is Mary and Diana's backing vocal blend. Flo was not a great talent and her fans are purely fans based on sympathy and sentimentality, not a genuine appreciation of her drab, dime-a-dozen congested voice.
SmoothCinnamonX 4 years ago
i think your comment is sad smoothcinnamonx, her voice sounds great here you are a minority here because more and more people are discovering that Flo did have alot of talent. so get over yourself and enjoy a great black singer cuz thats what Flo was she actually sounded like a sista not some white girl!
noname2342002 4 years ago 3
Forgive you.
That may be your taste however beilige Flo never which it could can you certainly not times in the beginning.
Thus disappear you are not welocme little b*tch
