Holy shit the bit ending at 6.50, like, wtf.... I'm going to be straining me ears to hear that crazy shit, you can see how Devin's stuff gets to where it is though. Who else makes that effort? Really does add depth and uniqueness to his music...
Really interesting video, I basically only work with MIDI when I do any music so seeing some of the inner workings of working with audio clips like this is both interesting and, in this case, humbling. Thanks alot for sharing!
oh god....and I just thought it was 2 guitars bass, keys drums and vox with occasional effects -_- jesus christ Devin even your "basic" tracks have so much depth, if only I could somehow hack your mind and steal a percentage of your skill.
Love this stuff man!! would really like to see some of the stuff you do with logic too as I dont have PT ,, yet,, obviously there is a lot of tips in these that applies to any daw, and for that i am very grateful! keep it beast man!
Do you have to ask permission to use those samples from movies or is there some kind of a limit like 10secs you can borrow without asking? Sounds like an urban legend to me but anyway appreciate the trouble you have seen making these videos!
@erskantti I imagine it would be to difficult to tell exactly what movie it's from and he probably altered it enough for it to be unrecognisable so it;s all good in the hood
wow... you never realise how complicated it is until someone breaks it down to each detail, then you see why the song is what it is. Devin, you are a musical genius
I'm struggling to record a demo at the moment and these videos have been incredibly helpful and interesting. Especially hearing all the effects and funny noises that turn it into a big fucking soundscape, it's incredible how you barely notice all these things being there but when you think about it the song wouldn't be half as good without each one.
Mr. Townsend. I just want to say I truly appreciate these type of videos. Thank you for taking the time to film this part of your work. This truly helps DIY'ers like me. Thank you sir.
Devin should totally make some more electronic music.

Devin - Have you used Cubase or Nuendo? If so, how does Protools compare?

the drum section at 6:00 could be its own minimal track. Genius hidden in the wall of sound, which itself is genius....

@snuif9: Actually I prefer Cubase because it has a way better MIDI engine. If you only do audio though, Pro Tools a bit better.

i really feel the need for protools now =( looks just so much better then cubase

@JamesGod08 Just because he didn't notice it in the title does not mean you can be a douchebag towards him.

On record the song sounds deceptively basic.
But of course, it's Dev so you know there's some gnarly, sub-sonic shit going on everywhere.
