  • I remember watching this very early in morning before school, i used to get up super early to catch bagpuss and magic roundabout :)

  • Next up - the 5.40 news, read by Kenneth Kendall.

  • I'm loving the metaphor of Dougal getting high and then having an epic comedown!

  • wow its diferent than than 3D one

  • Where is the 'Time for bed!' line? :(

  • @barbieorochimaru

"Time for bed!" said Zebedee was only used very rarely, and not in this one.

  • right, it says that there is no drug refrences, but its says that ermintrude is affected in a bad way by poppies? (poppies associated with heroin) and then she ends up 'flying a kite' (metaphorically=getting high)

  • @minimguinness

Well, yes! Though to be fair, the video description is entirely mine and that is exactly what I was implying. I still think that there are blatant drug references in it but they are suggestive rather than specific. Eric Thompson definitely crossed boundaries in the Magic Roundabout. Whether the drug references were intentional or not are a matter of opinion. Either way, I shouldn't think Thompson was a druggy. He may have known people who were, though. It was the 60s/70s

  • @nickhirst999 I would have to disagree with you, there. A child watching this isn't going to assosiate it with drugs; they will simply see the innocence of flying a kite and getting ill from eating things they shouldn't. It teaches kids that 'eating poppies are bad', which shows that they shouldn't eat unfamilliar items. So, I would say that he didn't come close to crossing any boundaries, as you put it. However as a 16 year old watching this video again, you can clearly see the references. :)

  • @gibboj94

Well, I think we agree then! I was a child when I first saw this and when Eric Thompson died in 1982, the BBC repeated them. I had just gone up to secondary school in 1982 (age 13) and immediately saw references which had not registered before. At this age I was growing a cannabis plant in my parents' back garden!

Thompson was definitely crossing boundaries and making clear "adult" references! That's why he's one of my all-time heroes!

but I think you know what I mean!

    :)

  • Simply Brilliant. Brought back a lot of childhood memories. Thanks for posting it.

  • i loved this when i was a kid, explains alot lol !!!!

  • loved it thankyou****************

  • "ermintrude, im afraid shes been affected by all those poppies shes been eating"

    "poppies?" said florence

"well its either that or the pansies, I dont know which is worse. but whatever it is, the poor old things in a very bad way, i think her moon jumping days are over anyway, if she ever did it, which i doubt, it always seemed a very unlikely story to me, very unlikely.

  • @bornphoenix

I'm surprised I didn't reply to that one earlier! I actually wrote out the entire script of this episode some time ago.

That little interchange is another Eric Thompson classic! Thompson was a genius!

Thanks for posting it word perfect, bornphoenix!

  • i loved the movie, just saw it last night! =D

  • "Ermintrude's been affected by all those poppys she's been eating".......ROFL...LOOOL!!!......and they said this show contained NO drug references.

  • dougals constant spinning really spoons me out

  • The same thing happened with "Monkey" in the 1980's. No one was bothered to do a proper translation so they let their imaginations fly. The result was better than the original. I doubt they would be allowed to do that nowadays.

  • No Dylan in this one :( gotta love the hippie rabbit man. And yer blatently some chemical enhancement behind it XD

  • I used to love this wacky show. Do you think its creators were on drugs when they came up with this?

  • Well...people are divided on this subject. I was only a 5 to 8 year old when this used to be my favourite programme. Then it was taken off simply because it had been running for more than a decade. When Eric Thomson died in 1983 they started showing repeats and i started watching it all over again as a 14 year old and to me it was riddled with drug references! Why was Dougal always eating sugar lumps? Why did Dylan always appear to be off his head and falling asleep?!

    The official account:

  • Well, Thompson's widow, Phyllida Law said:

"Drugs? Nonsense. Thompson wouldn't even take an aspirin!"

Serge Danot maintains that as its French creator, he made the dog English and was under the impression that the English liked sweets!

    Hmm...I'm not entirely convinced!

Now what was that band who had a hit in the1960s with a song called "My Friend Jack Eats Sugar Lumps"?!

  • I'd say zebedee was all the proof you needed that this was the product of a drug induced mind.

I mean what the hell was it supposed to be???

  • I thought he may have been a jack-in-the-box that had escaped from his box.

  • @DarkAngel182 yes

  • Mmmm! Poppies don't grow very strong here in the UK. But it's time to harvest them and chase the dragon with them!

Hope I haven't missed the season!

The Liberty Caps will be mushrooming up soon but I prefer the poppies, myself!

    Thanks for the reminder! ;)
