@TheHumansUnite don't be put off. most of my videos happen on really busy main roads during rush hour...and even then for 30 seconds of footage there's many hours of enjoyable, uneventful riding. If you start out on quieter roads, which are nicer anyway, you'll be fine....as you build you confidence move onto main ones (or not if you don't have to - I only really do because of commuting to work or somewhere and having to use them...or at night where my lights aren't good enough for back roads)
oh no!! I said I was doing 30mph (which I knew was the speed limit...even though I was doing between 20 - 25mph). He didn't clock this straight away, until he said I couldn't of been doing 30 as he wasn't breaking the speed limit. I argued that even 20-25mph was pretty impressive from my legs...to which he said "I couldn't give a "monkeys" about your legs".
I don't think he did break the speed limit at the time, though he did seem in a hurry up when I was catching him up.
I couldn't see anything mentioned about cyclists position on the road in the latest 2007 Highway code, didn't it used to say something about keeping left but out further than drain covers?
When was the last time most people looked at the Highway code?! £2.50 or free online, not too hard is it?
It's weird, some people see cyclists as second class road users and not other vehicles. You weren't holding anybody up, you were riding defensively and quickly but he beeped you because in his opinion you should ride in the gutter? What a complete and utter tool. Ignorant fool, pisses me off royally!
I kind of hope the guy does check the highway code tonight and changes his attitude.
I'm sure I'll see him again. I've been going out a few times in the evening around the ring road. It's reasonably well lit in the evenings, lovely and wide...and cars make a fantastic training tool! It's also nice as there are a few Norwich climbs and descents.
I'll have to keep an eye out so I don't miss my apology when he finds out a cyclist knows more than him ;) haha.
It does give you a chance to have a longer debate, mind. That, and it's incredibly effective when it comes to campaigning, especially for companies. Just look at the number of apologies and transport manager instigated driver education sessions as a result of my videos.
You forget the effect of a little publicity and shame, and that of peer pressure. Of course there's a chance that won't change anything, but most drivers are amenable to learning.
ahh TWAT. people dont seem to realise it's possible for cyclists to go faster than cars...but also i often drive about 5 mph under the speed limit, yet no-one beeps me or overtakes me because of it! :P
I don't think the highway code suggests anything.....though, safety wise, no closer than 2ft is probably sensible on major roads. I was on the ring road at the time (which may seem a funny place to go for a bike ride)
Hex, I checked again yesterday to be sure - the only place I can find distances mentioned (and again only as a guide) is cycle specific literature.
There is provision in there for drivers that they need to be aware of why we're further out at times and that we may be faster than we seem though. This driver failed to take that into account.
I've just had a look at the highway code, seems a lot more detailed than just a couple years ago! It seems to have a lot more cycle related sections, giving a good amount of sensible advice to inexperienced cyclists. Shame very few of them will read it :P
Thank you for the sound advice. Keep the videos coming!!!

I enjoy watching your videos. I just bought a bike but am too damn scared to ride it on the roads cause of idiot drivers.

I got a little laugh when you caught upto him and he sped off, like he wanted to get away from the camera..lol.

So.... the driver admitted on camera that he broke the speed limit. Well, perhaps he needs to read the relevent legislation on speeding.
What a tit.

Great signalling at the roundabout. It looks like he didn't start until he was committed to the turn.

I can understand it a lot more with drivers in company vehicles.
Ultimately, I got honked (due to the driver's ignorance of the highway code)....it isn't something I'm that bothered about.
If I wanted a longer debate I could have. He didn't pass me for another few minutes so must have been stuck at the roundabout for a bit.
If I'd of waited around it would just have become silly. He wouldn't of believed anything I would have said, and I would know he was talking rubbish.

old lady James :)
I wasn't going faster than traffic, but certainly not putting in a bad effort!
Hopefully he'll go online tonight and have a look in the highway code for this 'rule' he is so convinced of.
thomase1 2 years ago
haha yep. one day i'll buy a car which can accelerate to and stay at 30mph without using a hell of a load of fuel...

Isn't a suggestion to be NO CLOSER than 2ft from the curb?

For drivers? Rule 211, 212 and 213 specifically.
downfader2 2 years ago
Hmm it must have been Cyclecraft I read about the 2ft rule.
hexatron2006 2 years ago
IIRC 60cm, so yes.. but I only read it in the shop *blush*
